  1. errrm change icon and text sizes, and resize your windows so they are smaller, that way you’ll have all the joy of squinting to see the stuff on the screen.

I’m interested in why you want to do this. Since even if it does work it’ll only give you the appearance of a higher res, and’ll probably distort a fair bit.

  2. Well there are drivers available, have you tried running the alsa setup program as root? i can't remember the command (alsasetup or alsaconfig, if i remember rightly) it comes with most distros and will setup your sound in seconds.

I often find this program works even when my distros setup tool fails, if you don’t have it, download it. (try googling for 'alsatools' or 'alsa')

  3. If anyone still cares, if you install 98 first, xp will detect it and automatically install a boot menu.

Why would you want windows 98? It's a piece of crap

lets see, its cheap, light and fast. Better DOS compatibility, Better OpenGL rendering and runs alot of the old games/programs that wont run well (or at all) on the NT kernel. I've had alot more problems with 2000/XP then i ever had with win98.

  4. hmm, do I really want to trust Linux reviews by a noted BSD fanboy.

At any rate I’m a suse boy myself (or was before the Novell Microsoft thing).

Although it can be a little slow, its easily customisable and the yast and sax tools are almost indispensable.

I used to use the kde, I found it relatively configurable and fairly pretty. However of late I have downgraded to the windowmaker.

The main problem I found was the aggressive disk caching that caused slowdowns and ate ram, once this was addressed it was fast and stable.

  5. I’ve moved around alot over the years but I currently have laying about:

an ISA SoundBlaster 16 - the best soundcard i ever owned none of that ac97 crap, unfortunately the 4x cd-rom drive is long gone.

a 486dx2-66 not a computer just the processor

a few sticks of EDO not sure on the size, but guessing by the computers i have owned they would be somewhere between 1MB and 32MB.

  6. I am trying to write a script to run some programs remote from another computer on my network.

I was hoping to ssh in using -X and run the programs to save me installing (and configuring) them again.

However after I connect to another computer I need to enter my username and password.

I was wondering if I could incorporate these into my script for a silent connection and execution of the program or if failing that i could be asked to enter the info in a small xterm, which will disappear after the password in entered and then run the program silently.

n.b the password and username are the same on all my computers, if that helps.

  7. My point was... without typing in a rude manner that instead of going ahead with a LAN party this month (November 2006), they want to push for next month with GE (assuming now- not fact) and promote something that not everyone has. If I remember right, the choice for LAN party 11-2006 was Golden Eye Source or warsow. Well guess what? No warsow. No LAN party. What, the servers can't handle warsow?

I mean no offence but I see the clash of the classes for far too often nowadays. This is one of the reason I support open-source= It's for everyone for who has the talent or the need.

Take a lesson from M$. You push corporate too much, you're going to have a major falling out. Oh yeah, and Novell is dealing with the enemy.

    Again, no harm. Just disappointment.

    Keep the LED's coming Wess.

    Ditto!

  8. BORIS U F*CKING GFX-ist !

    u goddamn nvidea fanboy ....

this doesn't have anything to do with ati or nvidea , he's just a nub ....

junior m8 u and me both kno steam has spontanious crashes you just whitnessed a harder one thats it dont break ure head about it ....

Methinks this one has been corrupted by the 'shiny things' of ATI.

  9. I never use those ATM's anyway, they usually charge.

Good idea though, just goes to show how vulnerable some of the banking systems are.

I work in a bank, and my warnings about connecting to the central server through port 23 seem to go unheeded (we share our network with Leeds city council, the largest employer in the city).

  10. There are a couple of very similar languages and some scripts/programs to convert existing code.

[cynicism]Can you really imagine life without something as powerful, flexible and stable as VB [/cynicism].
