  1. Just get a cheap, slow, headless box with passive cooling. Stick a small distro or win98 on it. Should do the job plenty good. That way if you get bored of your web server you can use it as file server or game server and so on.

    Specialist hardware is so inflexible.

  2. I just have to ask, what was the point? I've never heard of the show, so I'm not sure what the premise is. Did they really think that something would NOT happen, I mean c'mon, it's Alabama.

Sorry for my ignorance if it's obvious, just curious.

yeah, but they also thought it would be funny

  3. I understand why... pipeing from echo does not work.... < in from a text file does not work...

Yeah, I've tried those as well. I have a feeling that it's just going to be more complicated that it's worth.

I don't know much about windows, what happens if you try the password hash instead of the actual password?

Also does windows not have any cmd keys or something. I had a similar problem on Linux.

  4. As a pointless bastard i feel the need to point out that .exe is essentially a Microsoft binary (DOS, Windows).

As such the proper term would be binary.

Also I’m a little out of the loop as far as windows is concerned, what’s a .msi? and how does it differ from a normal binary setup program.

note: I think its .msi, some sort of .exe that’s not an .exe

  5. I use the default one (or not). i usually don't bother with it though, i'm behind nat and i'm far too lazy for port forwarding AND opening.

still use a firewall on the odd accasion i use windows, though thats more to stop spyware phoning home than anything coming in.

  6. well seeing as ure probably lazy ....

here ... put this in a folder with wget and execute it ...

That is DLSS's batch file re-written for bash.

edit: come to think of it with some interesting loops to check file names and sizes, you could probably make it interruptible.

  7. *sigh*. 'Use the command line', is the worst suggestion ever. Use the best method that gets the task done. Using the command line doesn't make you cool, it makes you a poser.

quite right, the GUI does make it easyer to grasp /dev/ concepts (as opposed to D:, C: and such).

lets face it a simple click beats typing 'mount -o loop /home/$USER/myiso.iso /media/dvd'

personally i didn't learn any command line options til about 6 months after i started using linux. 1337 is 1337, but there is such a thing as learning to walk before you run. C: C:DOS C:DOSRUN RUNDOSRUN

As for any tips; I would have to say make sure you install source packages, this will make it easier if you ever compile programs.

  9. have you formated the partition?, if you shrunk an existing partition did it automatically create a second one or is it unassigned space.

You know you really shouldn't be messing with low level disk tools if you not sure what your doing.

  10. ok, check you firewall has the port open, also check your ftp program supports fish (i think its also called sftp, but i could be wrong) and check you have the right protocol selected when you try and connect.

vanilla ftp is usually port 21.

edit: In retrospect the firewall shouldn't matter if its on you winbox, but i'd open it just in case and my pizza is here now.
