  1. Thanks n0x, Another thing this was a fresh install. The only really change I made is I did add most of the component services from the add/remove programs then the add/remove windows components. I don't see how any of those services could effect just file sharing. As I did mention it does appear that a service isn't running on the server as far as file sharing goes, cause when I try to browse for comptuers on the server it doesn't even attempt to search it instantly just error's out that host not found whether it be by ip or netbios name
  2. I've tried all the above. I've enabled netBios over tcp/ip, added my client machine to the WINS section of the tcp/ip properties, disabled firewall, I can ping the server ip just fine, I can access the ftp and web server just fine inside the local lan and externally, but for some reason out of all the things I've tried the file sharing ports will not open. 139 and 445 it seems as if on the server there might also be a service that is not running for file sharing because like when you click start --> search --> search for comptuers usually it will search the lan, but it does not. Instantly it error's out that cannot find host. The same with tryin to access the client via clientip or clientdns. As I stated earlier in my posts after not being successful I have a CBT Nuggets training cd on server 2003 and I watched the file sharing part to make sure I didn't miss nuttin so i'm a bit stunned :?
  3. Ok guys, i've narrowed it down to being a firewall issue. For some reason ports 139 and 445 will no open as it appears. They are listed as being opened in the firewall exceptions menu but with every nmap scan their listed as closed. I tried changing options to creating a custom ip access list and changing the option from Subnet Only to Any computer and the ports always show as being closed. :?
  4. Guys, thanks for all the advice. debianuser, yes I can access my shares by goin to start, run serverip so I can access them on the machine itself, but not across the lan. I thought I tried that already but I guess not, I have not even heard of SMB2, so that will be somthing I will look into. As far as the shares I set them up just like a standard share in XP Pro, with read only access for everyone and one admin user full access. So port 445 with the microsoft-ds service (as it appears that way with every nmap scan) that is for file sharing also? I didn't know that, but was curious. Umm I know I should be using windows for a server, but again just doin it for my own knowledge once I setup and am able to manage a domain then I'll be satisfied and move on to a linux based server. My thing is I study my butt off everynight at least an hour I got all kinds of interactive training, but unless I get experience (hands on) then I will never remember. Alot of useful info here again thanks hopefully I can figure something out tonight :D
  5. Man I kinda feel dumb even asking, but i'm actually stumped I even watched a CBT Nuggets video to see if I left anything out. My problem is I just installed server 2003 RC2 Enterprise edition. The thing is I cannot access any network shares. I can ping just fine back and forth, but cannot access any shares on that machine nor access any shares from that machine to any other machine. I have all the file permissions set as I would if it were just XP pro, only admin's with full access and everyone with only read access. File sharing is enabled and opened on the firewall, however something weird... to my understanding file sharing uses port 139, but with a nmap -sS scan it said 139 was closed. I double checked to make sure I did allow it and I did it was fine. I tried even disabling the firewall, still cannot access anything. There are currently no anti-virus or 3rd. partry firewall's installed. When I try to access a client machine from my server I start to type "" and it automatically gives me 2 choices I could select "Default LAN" and "Favorite LAN". Haven't seen that before. My ultimate goal is to setup a domain mainly for experience, but right now I would like to just transfer some data from this client to the server I did install most of the windows components also after installation, not sure if that has anything to do with it. One thing when I try to access a client via My Network Places, address bar computername it doesn't even hesitate to look, it automatically spits back it cannot find it and to check the spelling. The same goes with Start, Search, search for computers, it doesn't seem to search the lan at all, it's like there is a service not started or something, I checked all the one's that seem like it would relate to this issue and they all seem to be running. I'd greatly appreciate any info/advice and at the same time feel dumb if it's something so simple, but this is really my first time messing with server :D
  6. Hey thanks man. It loaded Darwin just fine. Although I've never messed with Darwin I should be able to get the hashes and hopefully crack them. What I was thinking was dumping the hashes to a usb drive and it being a mac system, using a version of linux to crack the hashes or is a hash file just a hash file reguardless of platform? One thing I was curious about is since I am able to boot Darwin couldn't I somehow just add a user account that way to log onto the system then proceed to try to gain the highest level of priveledges? I was able to get the ibook to at least read cd's... well I found an old one I burned along time ago os x cd 1, back track and knoppix it did not spit any of those back out, but when I boot holding option to select boot device only the hard drive was listed. I'm getting closer and shall own this ibook soon. :D
  7. @ Cooper I tried "make menuconfig" and got the error about no rule or makefile something like that. It's like something was missing so I viewed the man page for make and tried a few things, but could not figure it out. I'm tempted to just format and re-install, but I'm determined to troubleshoot this issue. @ K1u is there any good active linux forum you would recommend. I usually only post on pretty active forums.
  8. Yea I figured linux would be a better way to go with reading the drive. I do have the adapter to go from lap-top HD to IDE so I guess I am good there. I guess I just have 1 more ? about the whole situation. The cd-rom, this is one where it's not a slot you slide the cd into it's more like a ibm based machine where it has the drive tray, but... is it an OS X security issue to where it will not ready any disc until sucessful log in, or is it possible there could be some type of bios preventing it? I never seen a mac or heard of one with a bios cmos feature and so far haven't found any useful info googling except I think I read the new mac's with the intel chip I think has a bios.
  9. Thanks for all the input guys:D could I mount the HD in a windows based system and see the the contents/file system of the drive since it's a mac? Or does it have to be a linux or mac based type system? @maddog Yea I did check that website which gave me a good understanding on how good mac security is. Thanks though.
  10. Hey guys, I got a pretty good challenge on my hands. One that I'm surprised I haven't seen here yet. OS X security seems to be pretty good. I have my friends ibook with FileVault enabled. I thought I could just be slick and boot off a live CD and gain access to the drive. Something weird, I don't really have any mac experience, but it won't accept any disc in the cd drive. It just spits them all back out I'm not sure if this is in mac security of if the drive could be bad or something I know it isn't the cd's I've used a good variety even a macintosh printer installation cd just to see if it'd read it. So I just messed around for a few tryin default log in techniques and after sometime just tried root for user and a couple bad passwords and it asked me for the master password to reset a user password. Just curious does anyone know of a way to crack an actually account or master password. Any good mac or linux type tool? Also do macs have like a bios/cmos setup? Sorry for all the n00b ?'s I been googling for about 4 hours now, my friend saw what I can do with my favorite live-cd distro and he had a mac so I decided to test it on a mac, but im just not sure now if his drive works or if it's a mac security issue why it won't accept any cd-media? Appreciate any guidance:)
  11. Hey thanks cooper I'm gonna try that right now, I hope it works :D
  12. I did forget to mention, yea I have tried the alsaconfig program, and it doesn't detect my sound card, so it does appear to be a driver issue, just weird how re-compiling the kernel could do that. I guess I will search for driver's for it and see what I can find. Umm then I'm just not sure exactly how to install/apply the drivers it being linux. Would it just be something like make && install ?
  13. Thanks guys, sorry, again I forget to mention the distro and card and I always try to be as specific as possible. Anyway I'm using BackTrack a bootable Network Security/Auditing Suite, but I do have it installed to the drive so i'm dual booting. My card is Realtek AC97 running of a VIA chipset. I just find it weird that after I followed the tutorial it would cause so many problems.
  14. Anybody ever get an error like this when running alsamixer function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device What happened was I was following a ndiswrapper tutorial and for some reason part of it was recompiling the kernel and since I did that now I get that error when running alsamixer. I've tried messing around in the sound system section if the control center with no luck. I would appreciate it if someone might be able to help me get audio back. I searched and searched for even just a way to restore the kernel to a previous state with no luck:(
  15. I just looked through my router which is a linksys WRT54GS and in the Setup --> Advanced Routing tab that area has a route table and gives the option to set a route for the Gateway or Router and for LAN & Wireless or WAN I'm assuming this would relate to routing wireless traffic through a VPN Server? Now I'm just curious how to set it all up if so :D
  16. Hey guys, pretty interesting thread. One thing I'm not understanding is how to do everything through a VPN? As far as I knew VPN was just a way to connect to your private network. So reading that using RDP over a VPN the idea I'm getting is to connect to the VPN first then use RDP? What sounds interesting is routing all wireless traffic through a VPN Server so that connection has to be made before you can do anything :D Is it possible someone could provide a link/tutorial to do this?
  17. Thanks guys, sorry I thought I did mention the distro. I'm using BackTrack a distro I found on remote-exploit.org. As far as installing I haven't used any package managers I've just been doing: ./configure make && make install That being said "make deinstall clean" sounds like it might work and now I will look into those package managers also :D thanks guys. Any suggestions on restoring the kernel to a previous state? I can't find anything in this distro that looks like it might do that.
  18. Hey guys, just a bit of linux info I'm curious of. I am n00bish with linux and I pretty much got it down as far as installing programs, but is there a special method to uninstalling programs or do I just delete the directory the install created? Also 1 other thing. I was attempting to follow a well written tutorial on ndiswrapper from remote-exploit.org with the distro BackTrack and every since I followed that tutorial it rebuilt or re-compiled my kernel and now I have alot of problems and alot of things just not working anymore or working properly. Just wondering if there was a way to restore the kernel to a previous state? Any help or advice is greatly apprecieated :D
  19. @ msoule xXxellent :D I knew somebody else out there would find a way. Now if only I can make RDP stealth thanks man.
  20. As an example, say you want to grab items from the current logged in users documents, add this to your .bat file somwhere: mkdir %~d0%computername% xcopy "C:Documents and Settings%username%My Documents*.doc" %~d0%computername% /s/c/q/r/h It will create a directory with the computer's name and start copying anything with a .doc extention it finds What if I wanted to copy only .doc and .jpg, would I need to add a new line: xcopy "C:Documents and Settings%username%My Documents*.doc" xcopy "C:Documents and Settings%username%My Documents*.jpg" or can we seperate it somehow in the same line xcopy "C:Documents and Settings%username%My Documents*.doc, .jpg" I agree a package to copy documents, the above command stops at My Documents. Inside my documents is usually My Pictures and My Music I'm assuming this will search through the entire my documents and dump all .doc or .jpg?
  21. Wondering if anyone might be able to help me. I added to the payload I'm using to enable RDP, but theres one part I'm not sure how to go about enabling via command line. You have to right click on my computer --> properties --> Remote and then there is a check box that needs to be checked to accept connections. Anyone have any idea how to do that by command line or how I can implement that into the switchblade?
  22. @ pseudobreed hmmmm... very interesting. I will probably try this out and see how I like it. Thanks though man, I will definately try your method at least:)
  23. True. I guess why I asked is because I was using AxCrypt. It could be a bit time consuming to encrypt all the data sometimes, so I was wonderin hmmm... if I can just put a password on the drive I wouldn't need to encrypt the data. I haven't messed with true crypt yet, but I will this weekend. Is it possible to password protect the drive or any drive alone?
  24. No I wasn't saying nothing about getting data off the drive. I'm just curious if there is a way to password protect the drive so it's in-accessible without entering a password. For example say I lost one of my flash drives or forgot it at my friends house and he wanted to see what was on it. He goes to stick it in and try's to access it/view the contents and he's prompted with a password.
  25. @ CaveMan Just tryin to make sure I understand this correctly. Are you saying your wanting to basically password the usb device that way no matter what usb port on any pc it is inserted into, the user will be prompted with a password just to access the drive? If so I have been curious about the same thing and would like to know possibilities. Not just for USB for any type of drive. Instead of just encrypting all the data it would be nice if we could just password protect a drive.
