  1. all of you complaining about your phones should try the phone i have (Treo755) and as soon as you do, you will literally get sick. the treo is by far the worst half-assed attempt to even name something a cell phone. the treo has NO feature that stands out as being even somewhat useful. I am sure that when the assembly line that makes treo's stops, the global economy will recover, the suicide rate will plummet, and somewhere an angel will get its wings!!! ok, enough being subtle, stay away from this phone. ;)
  2. if you have a spare machine lying around you might want to check out untangle. it is pretty decent not to mention free. you also need to understand that just a plain router is NOT a firewall. If your router does not have firewall software installed on it, you are only going to benefit from the nat of the router. You should also understand that a firewall is only as good as the rules that you have setup on it. an example would be... on some firewalls, you can add many specific inbound and outbound rules. depending on the firewall, these rules can conflict and you might leave yourself vulnerable. for the most part an average user will be fine with a decent software firewall and behind a nat.
  3. you can find a school just about anywhere that will have a CIS program. as far as being difficult, that just depends on you. most of the CIS programs will lean toward Programing and not System administration. Starting out as a system admin, you probably will not see 60k+. You are looking at more like 40. I am not trying to discourage you though, always remember that when/if you are offered a position with a company anything is up for negotiation including salary, stock options, vacation, moving expenses ect...
  4. dont forget about the os's that you are using to transfer the files to and from. for instance, vista and windows server 2008 have smb 2.0 support, which is a nice performance improvement over 1.0. in my labs i have seen about 40% speed increases. you will get the biggest benefit from smb 2.0 if the source and destinations are both 2.0 compliant. you would see just a little increase if only 1 of the 2 computers is smb compliant.
  5. You might see some questions on some older hardware and OS's. when i took it in 2002, I had a question on setting up com ports and interrupts using jumpers on a non pnp modem. Although, in 2002 you would still find that kind of hardware around it was still a bit rare. basically if you can build a pc, troubleshoot hardware/software, know some basic networking, and are pretty good at getting around in windows, you should do alright.
  6. simultaneous operations. think of multi threading like a cable splitter, you have one input but multiple outputs
  7. you must be doing something wrong. What neXusst said is correct the ^ character will allow you to use special characters. open a command prompt and type the following... echo set name=c:/^%num^%.bat ^>^> ^%name^% your outout should be... set name=c:/%num%.bat >> %name%
  8. i can not freaking wait for this election to be over!!! simply put, the next administration will probably not have the financial crisis fixed in the next 4 years. This is pretty sad for whoever gets elected, because people will want this problem to go away fast and it just wont, causing the next administration to be looked at badly. i can almost hear people saying it now... "if only we had elected..."
  9. There are many other distros out there that have a dvd iso that you can download. fedora, suse are two examples(both can be download via torrent too). In my experience frebsd is not always the best distro to start out with when learning linux, primarily due to the fact that some people just get bored with it. IMO ubuntu is probably one of the best for people wanting to try out linux and learn it as well. although you can not download it from ubuntu in a single dvd iso. you should be able to create a dvd disk though from the individual cd iso's.
