  1. Ooohhh....and I think you need Android SDK to install this. Turning out to be a bigger project than anticipated.
  2. Shoot, ran into another snag, I need to update the recovery menu before I can apply bugless beast. Going to try SirPsychoS upgrade found here: http://wiki.droid-devs.com/index.php?title..._Recovery_Image Apparently, there's a signature check to prevent third party firmwares from being loaded.
  3. Just throwing out other options.
  4. google for a batch script. or NTbackup?
  5. Do you have local admin rights on the PC? If not, you'll probably need to find a way to escalate your priviledges. Easiest was is a boot disk, but like you said, they'd know when you rebooted. I just wouldn't mess with it. No reason to risk being expelled.
  6. I wouldn't want to leave my droid someplace. In theory, sounds like it'd work, but it'd take a ton of work to make functional. They just recently got Android to wifi tether. See my forum post here: http://hak5.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15633 I plan on doing this by the end of the week. I've contacted Darren and he's going to do a segment on it when he gets back from the U.K.
  7. I'm no wireless expert, but my previous employer always used Cisco equipment to connect building at cooperatives, golf courses, and municipalities. Since you're doing point-to-point, I would look at directional antennas. They look like little satelite dishes. If you were doing point to multipoint, I'd go omnidirectional, which looks like a pringles can.
  8. Better idea Arief! Go to IPchicken.com and tell us the 4 numbers separated by periods and we'll try to open SSH 443 for you! Then we can help you out tons JarJar!
  9. <sarcasm> LOL. I love that 127.0.0.1. Just scanned it with NMAP and it has all kinds of awesome stuff. Wonder if I can metasploit that IP and hack that box. Hmmmmm.... </sarcasm>
  10. Interesting Whig. Definitely looks like an iPad competitor. Runs flash, has camera and USB port. It's $500, same as the iPad, but the real question: does it run linux? Chrome maybe? Is the battery replacable? However, the battery life isn't as good as the iPad. Hackability will make or break this product.
  11. Did some googling and found I may need a custom firmware with iptables. Duh, Darren mentioned this was an issue they were working on. I'm going to install "bugless beast" found here: http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=309&t=1553
  12. Alrighty, I just tested this out this morning. The application installs fine. I set it up to tether. I turned on WEP (I know, but it's the only encryption available), and I was able to connect to it via the wireless on my laptop. However, I was unable to get out on the net. I was able to ping up to the gateway (my droid), but I never got outside. Tried pinging google.com and 4.2.2.2 and got nothing. Maybe some DNS or routing issue going on there. I would try changing DNS servers but I'm not seeing an option for that in the app. Anybody else try this?
  13. Yeah. No DVD can be a bummer if you use one regularly. I thought I'd miss mine on my netbook, but I don't. I have an external drive that I can use when I need it. If I want to watch a movie, I'll rip a DVD over night and copy it over.
  14. Good point Psychosis. That's actually what I did recently with a couple of netbooks I purchased for my wife and me. Charles - how do you like that PC decrapifier? Does it work pretty good? I just heard about it today.
  15. Haha. I got an alpha too. I should just throw that in my laptop bag and start using that. Why didn't I think of that? Nice laptop you got listed there!
  16. Hey Hak5 community, I just read an article about Best Buy PC optimization and think it's crap: http://bit.ly/cdWeAE I was wondering what other techies do to "optimize" new systems. I've got mine posted here: http://bit.ly/crWojZ Thanks, Subl1m1nal
  17. I also think the Tomato firmware has some bandwidth monitoring functionality, however I'm not sure if it'll pinpoint the device that's consuming.
  18. Now that Darren has showed us how to root the droid, Lifehacker has turned it into a MyFi like device. If you don't know what MyFi is, it's a mobile wireless access point that connects you to a 3G connection. http://lifehacker.com/5447347/how-to-tethe...r-android-phone This is perfect and what I've been wanting from my droid! However, I don't have the guts to test it out on my phone and brick it. Anybody try this? http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ Darren, maybe a segment on this?
  19. LOL @charles. That's funny. Not to piss you off DV22. I wouldn't worry about it DV22. They're probably pulling some info from Facebook. Maybe Darren could tell you exactly what it's doing. As long as you're not getting this as a popup: http://www.twitterphishr.com/
  20. No kidding? I'll have to give that a try sometime.
  21. Could also try updating the video card drivers on the PCs. But because it's all the monitors on different systems, this is not likely.
  22. I've seen viruses cause the exe issue you're having. Check out the registry key listed above. Chances are, it nuked system restore, so if that doesn't work, try a windows repair install. If that doesn't work, reformat/reinstall. When I was consulting, the rule of thumb is to spend less than an hour attempting to remove/fix whatever the malware broke. If you can't get it in an hour, throw in the towel. Backup, reformat, reinstall. I doubt the .exe problem was caused by AVG. This was probably a product of the virus itself. I'm not going to pick my favorite AV app, but just make sure you have something protecting the system thats working and getting signature updates. Can't tell you how many times people think they're protected because the 30 day trial that they got with their computer is protecting them.
  23. Older games you might be able to get away with, though I haven't tested it. Though I must say, even flash video is sometimes not as good as on a full blown PC/laptop. Maybe an extra gig of ram would help (I plan on this in the near future). That and I'm running windows 7 instead of the XP that came with it. Thanks for the pointer on the wifi. After reading what I wrote, I wasn't very specific. Ubuntu wifi works, backtrack wifi doesn't. It has an Atheros AR9285 for Wireless. I've found this website to try on the backtrack forums - http://bit.ly/9HGMnW I'm going to try to get packet injection working on it because I'd like to do some penetration testing. I wouldn't call myself a linux master by any means though, but I'm working on it. Hopefully I'm helpful with your netbook purchasing decision!
  24. They'll probably fix this. But still, I think it's bad PR to release a product that's lacking when your company has been known for releasing innovative products. They're letting their fan base down. I wouldn't say people are "hyped" for it unless they're true apple fanboys/girls. I think there are cheaper alternatives. The only reason I can see people wanting an iPad over a Kindle is for games. Most people already have a music player of some kind. But you're right, I guess only time will tell. I think the iPad is Apple's way of trying to improve their media dominance in the eBook market and nothing more. I think it will flop like the Apple TV. Very true, but it has been done before. I've supported Windows XP Tablets before in the past and I think they worked out ok. They're cheap and you could use it for iChat or whatever they call it. Not that I'd use it for a camera, but if Apple's calling it a "netbook killer", they at least need to match some of the features. I honestly don't use the camera in my netbook. It's better than carrying an iPad AND a camera. You never know when you'll need it. Also, if they really wanted to, they could enable bluetooth phone calls. Holding that thing up to your head would look rediculous and probably cause brain cancer. Are you serious? Think of internet without flash. No Hak5/Revision3. No youtube. No hulu. No stupid facebook games/flash games. No webpage animations. If flash causes crashes on Macs, than Apple should be working with Adobe to fix these problems. It seems they're in a stalemate over some beef that's happened many months ago. It's not good for the Apple community.
