The Day of Silence in Online Radio

Why doesn't everyone stop paying royalties completely? Ok, they can sue one or 2 company's but not 30 or 40 all working together. Laws only work when the majority of people comply.

This tactic will not produce any worthwhile results.

I agree with Vako on this. What is needed is for more artists to publish under creative commons and use the internet for distribution. Then the artists make $$ with swag sales and concert and such that take the 90% profit from the record labels and puts it into the artists pocket. Darren when are those season 1 and 2 DVD’s going to be ready with the rest of the hak5 store? ;)

Instead of silence why not everyone open up there own radio stations? Or move them all entirely out of US territory? Why not fight a war of attrition and refuse to work with anyone but the artists themselves (play there music, and mail them the money directly)?

Anywhere with fairer laws. The one thing that pisses me off most about this is the way this is being reported as the global end of all internet radio. There's an entire world out that, one that isn't repeatedly crippling its economy to support industry's that are well passed there prime. Again, turning off your radio station will not do anything, no one but your listeners cares and even collectively it doesn't come close to a large enough amount of the population to be worth a damn. This really is a time to take the money else where or stop paying all together.

can you do that or does the recording company own the rights to the songs they play?

Outside of the US?  Sounds a lot like the Russian run Allmp3 or whatever that site was selling mp3s without having licenses themself.  That didn't really work for them too well in the long run.
