ubiquity GSM basestation?

I was searching for cheap alternative sdr transceivers for gsm research because i'm not interested in radio transceivers for any other purpose. Eventually I found this: http://dl.ubnt.com/newsletters/0123a.html

The rocket m900 seems to be a gsm basestation or a basestation range extender possibly. Not entirely sure.

My way of thinking is if it can be used to form your own gsm basestation, why pay upwards of $600 for a ursp or 2 hackRFs for a single purpose implementation.

I would love to hear the communities thoughts on this product
