quick question...

is there any way to ssh with firestarter running? if so how? if not whats a better firewall for linux?

What you need to do, is define an outbound access policy

Does Firestarter run on port 22? If so, you cant do both at the same time on the same port, you would have to define one of the services to an alternate port, and then port forward accordingly for each service. I'm not familiar with Firestarter, so thats why I'm asking.

Firestarter is a iptables GUI configuration tool btw digip. It likes to apply a deny all inbound rule when you run initial setup.
