  1. Well, I think in other threads a few months ago or so, I talked of basically a general dislike for Revision3. I do, however, like much of the early Revision3 work for example thebroken and early episodes of Systm. Those are the thoughts I gave for Revision3 content. Revision3 as a whole is slightly different. For one, I can agree with the dislike for Kevin Rose. I've read some stuff around BinRev about him supposedly ripping people off blatantly and the question of what he is doing in that upcoming hacker documentary. I've also had some bad experiences with the Rev3 community. I've visited the last two irc networks Rev3 has supported, and always felt like I've hit conflict from nowhere. For example a year or so ago I went into the Tekzilla channel, had a friendly conversation, and then was surprised by an oper that joined because he was alerted there was trouble in the channel. I also must have sworn off their forums at least four or five times since they updated their website back in the day. I remember one thread where some guy was accusing me of being afraid to compile linux when I said I had tried out Ubuntu or something. There has also been alot of talk about the moderators quickly taking down topics, which I think is always a bad idea.

Despite that, there appears to be a lot of good that Rev3 contributes. Going back to Kevin Rose, yes there is dislike for him, but he is a person who is taking independent media and going places with it. If I ever met him there is no doubt I would thank him for the work he has done in that area. thebroken was how so many people said "hey, I could do that" and basically started the iptv scene. I also completely agree that its good that Hak5 is making more money, nobody really pays attention to advertisements anyway (or at least they think they don't). And I know a lot of people would be like "hey, in that one cocktails ep, Darren said if it went commercial, it wouldn't be as cool", but face it, they're getting this money to put back into the show and thus can deliver more content each month. Like the show or not, there is bound to be at least one segment out of all that you would appreciate, and that makes it all worth while.

Everyone keeps bringing up the cast change bit. Some people are wondering why Matt and Chris are being compared to Jon and Harrison. Well, what else do we have to compare them too. Then there is the bit with Wess leaving, which if you couldn't predict, you didn't watch season three. He is the one that should be compared to Jon and Harrison. But that announcement was made so long ago, it baffles me that it keeps coming up in threads. Yes Wess is gone, yes we loved Wess, yes it won't be the same, but every time a door closes a window opens, and now that he is out of the equation, some other bit of magic will arise from the show.

You are right, the community has been changing since the announcement. New people are coming in all the time. The only difference I see with this influx and the previous ones are the fact that these new fans (Hiya all) have a real appreciation for Rev3. Otherwise, they're the same friendly people the show has been known to attract, we just have to remember that they are new and it will take a bit for them to fall into the rigmarole of the place. I've also heard wind of the crew trying to spice up the community, so there is no doubt this site will stick around, the only question is in what sense. I see a topic or two about how there are multiple forums, multiple irc channels, etc. Can things coexist? For how long? Only time will tell, and we are kind of pawns in the whole thing anyway. If one of the things were to be canned, it would be theoretically for the best, and detract from the complexity of the situation.

The fact that Hak5 still has control over its own content is probably the best bit to consider in this thread. This guarantees that the show keeps its aura. It doesn't matter if Rev3 is a corporate microcosm, they won't be able to G4itize Hak5 anytime soon. There is also the inarguable upside that Hak5 will indeed reach many many more people.

As for the community awakening and the associated drama, that is arguably a mixed bag. I haven't seen a big change in the community except for the previously stated influx of new people. The drama isn't strictly last week specific, a lot of that is three years worth of stuff we pushed together into one package. I mean, the drama hasn't been too public until recently, and many of us knew about the rev3 partnership in late July to early August, so that doesn't necessarily contribute. But yes it seems overwhelming, and I appreciate the cast's openness about all this. There looks like there are fundamentals of communication now, which can go a long way with a bit of an open mind.

  2. I completely agree with moonlit. Fuck all the "windows is shit" talk.

If you are pissed off about computers not being able to be purchased with no OS, fuck it, build your own computer. There's all this "fuck windows" talk but you never see "fuck *nix", and you want to know why? Windows users who know shit don't try to impose their views on you. I see all these anti-windows comments, but as soon as I would make a "linux blows because of A and B", I'd have 10 people on me like flies on shit. How about you stop trying to impose your views on others and keep them to yourself.

  3. That is one of the reasons I stopped moderating it. Also, if you are any sort of decent person, you would register an account on the wiki which allows you to edit 99% of the pages. I one by one changed the access rights to several hundred wiki pages throughout the last year or two to prevent spam. if you think its bad now, you should have seen it before.

As for how the hell is there spam now, bots can now register accounts, that technology hasn't always been around, but I have seen it develop here, so back a year or so ago, I made suggestions on getting a captcha either for account registration or page edits. Never heard anything back about that.

As for the wiki itself, fuck it. It used to be a thriving part of the community that has since been killed in accordance with the rest of the shit around here. I say good riddance. I stopped my duties in late May of this year, so all that spam has had time to build up. If you love the community as much now as I did oh so long ago, edit the spam out of your favorite pages, pick up a moderating gig, I personally challenge everyone to bring back the wiki in full force. I'll buy everyone a round if they do.

Moonlit speaks the truth, there was a time around here when if people saw something wrong, they would go about fixing it or creating a solution themselves just to help out the place they love. Now its just all this cry home to mom shit. Where the fuck did the initiative go.

"You must be the change you want to see in the world"

If this community is going to last for another year, there needs to be more new leaders of this place stepping forward to help. All the old figures are tired of the way shit is and they don't want to contribute to something that shuns them and basically gives a "fuck you", or for that matter countless people who just go "this shit is broken" instead of "thank you for setting up a bbs" or "nice job removing the spam".

This is no longer my community, I come here for topics just like this. There are so many loose ends around here and a limitless number of people coming into irc asking what happened with old projects and nobody is around to answer them. This if your community. I have more things on the horizon now; things that value my thought and input in ways I haven't seen since 2006.

I predict a topic about how the forums have come to a dull roar... oh wait.

  4. I guess that the project founder either disappeared, or there was lack of interest. Both of these have lead to projects being canned in the past. This text adventure, rainbow tables, analog5, BBS, comic, etc all died because of lack of interest or something went wrong with the founder. If you want to start stuff up, go ahead, just know what you're doing and what to expect.

  5. This topic is just a flamebait sandwich. K1u left, and we are just here yelling while hes not around to care. And for all those people saying don't do drugs and I can breathe and shit, stfu. A person's body is their own thing, and they can do whatever the fuck they want to it, so stop imposing your views.

  6. Its fuckers like this that piss me the fuck off. Make a topic in another forum, have everybody complain, and then make a repost in another forum, and its not even the right forum; the one made to keep the little kids from infecting the other somewhat-decent content forged by the community. The forum set up for the usb hacks is right there in the damn listing, and this is still happening.
