Thursday night for the meeting is best for me but I'm happy to eat most things so I'm easy about it. As for what to do during the day. We were planning to setup the network stuff on Friday night so we could have a play with that, make sure we got it right so that anyone who wants to build a CTF game on it can get that done. Maybe a bit of war walking or jump on a tourist bus and do some war driving. Then back, a few games of CTF and then dinner. metatron, you lucky sod, I almost decided to spend the cash and get off to Defcon but in the end couldn't justify it.

Surely it is just a few disk partitions, I would have thought someone would have figured it out by now, U3 has been around for long enough! Oh well, looks like I have to keep the VM running.

Are there any linux based tools for creating the cd partition on a U3 drive? That way I can create my iso in linux and then drop it on to the memory stick without having to fire up my windows VM.

As part of a business project I'm evaluating password recovery/cracking tools for things like word docs and zip files. I'm playing with some of the open source tools but there are a lot of commercial ones out there claiming to deliver the world so I thought I'd ask if anyone has used any. I know that some have free trials and demos but nothing beats real world testing and feedback. So, any comments on any apps please. I'm after things like speed, features included/missing, tech support etc.

Can I suggest people who are coming in on the train book early. I've just booked my ticket down from Sheffield and it has cost me £32 for 1st class all the way! Only 3 quid more expensive than standard.

I found the whole internet hidden in linux, I went to a command prompt and typed firefox. From that it was as though I had the whole of the internet at my finger tips!

I disagree, as we are organising it and inviting others along it is "our" event and so we can name it whatever we want. Also, what would it be like if things like Shmoocon, Defcon and InfoSec didn't have names? Everyone would be going round asking "are you going to the meet up in Washington in February?" rather than the easier "are you going to Shmoocon?" We may be starting small but as someone pointed out, if this does take off, some name will stick and it is better one that we have agreed on and we are happy with rather than something random that comes from someone with no real involvement with the event.

Spectrum 48k+ (the plus is important) Spectrum 128+2 (with built in tape player) Atari ST Pc with dos 3.3 then 4.01, 5, 6 win 3, 3.1, 95 installed from floppies and onwards from there but not as far as vista yet.

This meet up could be a little more "mature" (old) than I was expecting. I kind of thought I'd be the oldest by a long way!

Are we just booking the hostel rooms ourselves or is someone doing a group booking? What would be best is to warn the hostel we are all coming and then when we book we can tell them so they can put us all in the same rooms.

The power of posting on here, I posted then 30 mins later found the answer! I added ethtool -s eth0 wol g to my shutdown script and it all started working!

Has anyone managed to get a shuttle XPC SK43G to wake on lan? I've enabled everything I can find in the bios and have got it turning on from the keyboard but can't get it to listen to the lan. The packets are being sent out as I can pick them up on another machine on the lan so I know that the message is getting out just being ignored

There isn't much room for any extra fans in the case, the lid basically fits around the drive bay and the space underneath it is taken up with the expansion cards. I'm going to look at cpu freq scaling as well as the approach I mentioned about sleeping it overnight. The only thing I'm not sure about is getting the drives to power down as I have fetchmail retrieving mail every 5 mins and so the drives will be up and down too much.
