Probably more with line of site and some experimenting. To get a longer cone shaped range, use the antenna you have on hand and get a wire mesh noodle strainer. They are a $1 at the dollar store. cut a 2 holes in the noodle strainer, maybe 1' away from the base or bottom of the screen. I think a good rule of thumb would be to make sure the middle of the antenna is in the cone of the noodle strainer. If your going to spend a little money, I'd go for http://hakshop.myshopify.com/products/alfa-usb-wifi-awus036nha .. Then do the home made parabolic mod. It's a cheap buy , you'll get good range and a steady signal in permiscuous mode..

Its interesting that ubuntu is doing this move, and the underlying holes in the whole situation, especially when you take into perspective that the world is going mobile and the laptop is being replaced; albiet slowly. With Ubuntu touch going mobile, and ubuntu trying to move for there own phone OS, isnt it interesting that China is involved?? With super powers playing around in a scene like this, one has to think there are far more intrinsic machinations going on in the dark or behind the "wall" then those in the public have any idea...

This is a good concept though. With a little mod, add maybe 3/8th's of an inch to the side of the pineapple. With a slide cover like this , it would add way more storage while adding a tad bit of flair
