  1. Ahh so your pretty much in the same boat as me with HDD space. I only allocated 80gb for the ubuntu server data store and was planning on moving torrents to a 1tb shared drive on my HTPC.

Nice, I didn't know hachachi made a reverse outbound connection and I can see how that would be rather useful when leeching wifi. Just finished doing the hamachi install, I ran into a couple of minor issues in setting up my windows client but that was more to do with my comp acting weird and not showing the ubuntu server. lol that made me waste an hour or so I thought I cocked up another vpn install. A reinstall on the windows client corrected the issue and I now have my gateway hamachi VPN. =D Thanks again for the tutorial it made the linux side of things as painless as possible.

I figured that the ubuntu server had a web server installed already after loading those webgui programs but I didn't know that you could bind it to a different port (I will have to look into that). Is it possible to use one of the existing installed web servers and run it on port 80 with something like http://myipaddress/mywebsite (from what I can remember torrentflux does something like this)?

Thanks a bunch for answering my somewhat noobish questions, you have been a great help.

P.S: Just an Idea on the wifi leeching front, what about purchasing two wifi access points (or mod WRT firmware) that supports client mode and plug it into a Hot Brick LB2. I have been considering purchasing one when the financial gods bestow some money.

  2. yahuh, only just started watching anime again seeing as I am on holidays, knocked over moon phase. Just started to watch wagan midnight and ergo proxy. Ergo was a little slow and weird to begin with but its growing on me. =D

  3. I was wondering if anyone knew of any software which puts your HDs to sleep if they're not in use and if they overheat. And if the main HD overheats it shuts down the system and notifies me via email.

Not to sure about that, I always thought the sleep function was supported in the O.S itself (well in windows it is) not so certain with ubuntu. It could also be a bios setting somewhere under power management.

  4. Thanks for the positive feedback guys :) It really means a lot when i get comments back on stuff i've posted.

If you're interested, i have a "Pimp my laptop" video i did awhile back with my Toshiba Portege. A lot of people were having trouble getting the touchscreen, digitizer pen and sound working on ubuntu linux.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8q79gkMqS5w

Next mini tutorial will probably be a basic WEP/WPA auditing and possibly a "Pimp my desktop" via the new Ubuntu release 9.10 (I had a hell of a time deleting the gnome-panel for my minimalistic setup).

I had to fix a a Toshiba Portege the other day at work (first time I came across one). I must admit its one sexy looking laptop. Personally I am not a huge fan of touch screens n what not but I will check out your work when I get around to it (has your blog bookmarked).

WEP/WPA auditing on ubuntu sounds interesting. I wrote a similar tutorial for backtrack 3 linkage about a year or so ago.

I ended up installing ubuntu 9.04 and open ssh on my ESXi server the other night. First thing I installed through ssh was sudo-apt get ubuntu-desktop >:P yes yes laugh at the dyslexic GUI fan boy, what can I say startx is my security blanket.

From there I followed your tutorial and picked the two quieck/easiest to install apps webmin and torrentflux due to it being late at night. I have never used these packages before but after a quick look and fiddle I instantly fall in love.

I also plan on installing hamachi and irssi later on today, hopefully I wont bork the VPN install up like last time. =D

BTW I have a couple of questions and please excuse my n00bish-ness.

1: I was curious as to how much HDD space you have for your perfect ubuntu server and what you would class as the min install space for it?

2: What port do you forward on your router for hamachi?

3: Seeing as Webmin and torrentflux use either http or https if one was to configure a web server on the linux server will this cause issues with http:ipaddy for the apache server?

No probs on the comments, one must always give credit where it is due and you obviously spent a fair amount of time doing the video and posting blog up with all the command line.

  5. Kick ass dude, I was planning on doing something like this with the 2nd server I scored and you have saved me a stack load of time searching on how to install it all.

I am by no means a linux expert and occasionally run into a few issues every so often and its nice to watch someone else do it with an explanation prior to diving into the deep end.

    *tips hat* Thanks mate.

  6. I trust you are no longer with the psycho hose beast who destroyed your phone? Oh and I got my GF the Wacom Bamboo (fun) The Intuos4 looks freaking hot too. She's the artist who might actually use it.

hahahah Well if I had a facebook profile the status would be set to its complicated >:P What can I say I am a glutton for punishment and enjoy the psycho stalker types. lol My sister nick named her Rose from two and a half men and boy did I laugh.

I was originally looking at getting the bamboo fun until I read a few reviews on the nib wearing down and needing replacement, less levels of pressure and how the Intuos4 provides a closer resemblance to the pen and paper feel. I am more use to doing my art work the old fashioned way and am pretty noobie when it comes to photoshop. But yeah I like the sexy expensive toys and controlling the desktop with the tablet gave me a nerdgasim. XD

  7. I lol'd and love that T-shirt too, I so want one now. >:D

As for xmas I did rather well for myself this year.

    - 1tb seagate SATA HDD preloaded with 300gb of anime love.

    - LG KS something something webslider phone (Replacement from the g/f who went psycho and smashed my nokia 0_o) WOMENZ!

    - 2nd hand dell power edge 2650 server.

    - rail kit for above server.

    - wacom intuos4 A4 size tablet which I shall be getting shortly seeing as it was purchased online just before xmas. I sooooooo can't wait to get my hands on it. XDDDD

  8. Hey Guys,

I encounter a problem I haven't come across before and my google searching left me up the creek. I have a Western Digital 700 and something GB external HDD which is formatted in FAT32.

I was backing up some .iso's prior to an O.S nuking and whenever I tried to copy one particular .iso image which was 4.06 GB in size I received a dialog box basically saying I don't have enough space. 0_o Which is weird considering I have 600 GB of free space to play with on the bloody thing.

I am guessing this has something to do with the fat32 format but I am not 100% certain and was wondering if someone could shed some light on to this problem for me.

    Thanks in advance guys.

  9. thanks mate glad ya got a giggle out of it. XD

Looks like Australia is already being filtered, reports are hitting the internet that Conroy has sicked his hell spawn minions on stephenconroy.com. The auDA pulled the domain name down in 3 hours which is completely unheard of. The website is now located at http://stephen-conroy.com

For news articles see the following links for details.

    Funny Hitler video

This minister seriously needs a good bitch slap.

  10. Well I wouldn't go as far as rioting or any other questionable activity. So far I have written a few emails to ministers and putting forward some idea's to the block the filter organization that only just formed. So if any of the Aussie crowd or even international folks have some skills in website coding, photoshop or anything else mentioned on the wiki contact one of the representatives.

I found this while lurking the internet and I lol'd.

    blacklist.jpg

So I decided to make some of my own, please excuse some of the low res pic's. I was spewing I couldn't find a better guilty image. But meh it does the job.

  11. Yeap we are joining the ranks of North Korea, China, Saudi Arabia and Iran. The sad truth is it wont be long until the UK and other countries get to share our pain. I have heard that it has already been talked about in the UK and I am sure when it goes ahead alot of other countries will be watching closely to see how it works in a western country.

The recent report by Professors Catharine Lumby, Lelia Green, and John Hartley, Untangling The Net: The Scope of Content Caught By Mandatory Internet Filtering, has found that a wide scope of content could be prohibited under the proposed filtering regime. Refused Classification (or RC) is a broad category of content that includes not just child sexual abuse material but also socially and politically controversial material -- for example, educational content on safer drug use -- as well as the grey realms of material instructing in any crime, including politically controversial crimes such as euthanasia. This type of content may be unpleasant and unpalatable but we believe that government should not have the right to block information which can inform debate of controversial issues.

    http://google-au.blogspot.com/2009/12/our-...-filtering.html

The problem with this silly proposal is some of the stuff under certain categories is a little to vague. Technically speaking sites that contain information on how to break computer systems for educational purposes could be potentially black listed. So much for freedom of information.

And you can be sure that once they implement phase one of content filtering its only a matter of time until the movie industry puts it weight in and wants p2p blocked as well.

The one thing that annoys me the most is that if you are opposed to the filter you are automatically labeled a kiddy fidler and it seems the goverment has this working to its advantage. During the testing stage and the recent declaration of a mandatory content filter being implemented it has attracted very little media attention on tv. Most articles prop up on online news/blog feeds and read by people who actually understand the consequences.

I did some lurking the other day and stumbled across this Auschan looks like anon is weighing in and a shit storm maybe approaching.

  12. The irony to the whole stupid proposal is that the content they are aiming to block floats around on dark nets and those who wish to get around it will and things will go even more underground or back to the old sneaker net methods.

FFS Punish those who are responsible and not the entire population. What pisses me off the most was this was not an election promise nor was it even mentioned. +1 the Pirate party imo.

  13. Good point Psychosis, its rather annoying that most of us "ADULT" gamers who make up the majority of games purchasing are treated as 15 year old's and now we have the same sort of thing with out Internets.

I was initially for some sort of content filter and I am sure a few people would be if it was done the correct way which has been discussed on various forums. The other sucky thing is both of the major parties will be for the filter and only a few people within each party are against it.

Then you also have the fact that the majority of people within Australia don't fully understand the technology nor do they full understand the implications of the first round of content filtering.

Bring on the election, both of the major parties are not getting my vote until they get their shit together.

  14. Ah this rubbish is really irritating and a complete waste of tax payer dollars. Those who need to get around it will while everyone else is made to suffer (so typical).

I guess we can all look forward to seeing Anonymous on the news again for DoSing Kevin Crudd's website.

BTW I noticed you posting on Ausphreak earlier the other day. =P

  15. I got my xmas gift early. I ended up getting an old Dell power edge 2650. x2 xeon cpu's, 4gb ram, x4 72gb scsi hard drives. The first one I got had a bung hdd and the bell end on ebay sent me the wrong one (thank god for dell service tags in the bios to compare with ebay listings). So I got a much better replacement. XD

Birthday is coming up shortly after and I have put my hand up for one of those large wacom intuos4 graphic tablets. Damn they are pure <33333

  16. ahh awesome, thanks for the clarification on Cisco based equipment digip, much appreciated. Well after having a good 2nd read through from the links I posted I can't imagine why any home user who is the slightest bit tech savvy would enable it either, the fact that the attack is not platform specific and can utilize flash or java makes it even more powerful and flexible. I think I will turn UPNP off after this posting.

*nods* Couldn't agree more about the community on here, its definitely the most insightful and helpful one I have come across.

I will also add that some all in one modem/routers have been shipped to unsuspecting customers by their ISP that have the web interface for the router accessible from the cloud. Worse still these can be searched via google and some use the default user name and password login credentials

    check it

  17. You aint wrong there Sparda. The changing DNS is attribute is pretty interesting.

Just a quick question, I am assuming cicso equipment (not talking linksys) does not support UPNP or at least has it disabled by default? Also what about other brands of enterprise lvl routers from other manufactures?

  18. Nice write up digip and thanks for supplying the linkage. You now have me curious as to what kind of stuff you can do to a UPNP enabled device. I may have to google it up if we get quite during work.

    cheers mate.

  19. SOLUTION:

Don't use LanSchool or wait for the encyrption scheme to get an upgrade.

    I lol'd hard.

Looks like you guys did way more research into lan school than I could in my current state. Interesting stuff and thanks for sharing it.

I must admit one can't help but to feel all warm in fuzzy inside when someone else runs with a previous related topic and come up with something completely different.

    Keep up the good work.

P.S: Nice addition to your website, my only gripe is your banner doesn't do the page justice. XD I will be doing Multi media next year seeing as I finished my network security course so once I get some better photoshop and web deving skills I don't mind offering a hand if you need someone (just putting that out there). XD
