Sparda
The only way Linux can get a virus is by pretending to be windows! :D
VaKo
Still, its an attack vector... Especially as most people who are shifted onto ubuntu tend to be the type of people who a: will "click here to win $$$" and b: want to use windows programs seamlessly with gnome. Ubuntu's target audience is the gutter end* of the market, so they have to consider things like this... (* those who call tech support at 2300, and consider "idunnoemailBROKE" to be an error message)
Sparda
It's not particularly exploitable though. The virus would only run while wine is running. Still, it's Microsoft's fault for instigating the virus writer's in the first place
VaKo
I wonder how hard it would be to modify an windows virus to run in the default configuration of wine installed on ubuntu? Something like a simple SMTP engine that spams out copies of itself shouldn't be that hard.
Garda
I think a quote about wine somewhere is that they attempt to duplicate the win32 API, bugs and all. It's not a good replacement for windows, it's a replacement that tries to be as much like windows as possible.
Sparda
An instant security improvement in wine would be to make / not accessible by default. To take that even further only make the virtual C drive only accessible from inside Wine. Much easier to secure (and fix when infected, just delete ~/.wine) then Windows. Sparda
Who in there right mind would run a windows program as a super user? oh right... you can't get any thing done in windows unless you run every thing as a super user...
