Ubuntu Wireless issue on dell insperion 1525

Hey guys can someone please help a linux n00b before I crack a shit fit.

I have ubuntu 8.4 installed on my Dell insperion 1525 but have a few issues with the ubuntu wireless 1395 802.11g Mini card not working (I believe its broadcom)

After my initial install of ubuntu I download all of the 260+ updates required and also consulted the hardware drivers option under administrator and enabled the Proprietary Drivers for Broadcom STA wireless driver I get the following.

1: Wireless card seems to be working seeing as I can scan for networks however when I try to set the WPA2 key in the networking manager it always resets it back to the WPA 2 type.

2: When I do an ifconfig my wifi card shows up as eth1 (I always thought wireless was Wlan or wifi something or other).

3: It can not associate with my access point

It gives you very specific information on your hardware (useful if you need to find drivers for windows btw), and in this case it would appear that the BCM4312 has issues with linux. So I would recommend that you give ndiswrapper a go.

ok awesome I will commit that command into memory.

as for the ndiswrapper I have heard of it before but have no idea what it is or how to install it (yes yes I know I suck). =P

I have a BCM43XX card myself.

First you'll need to remove your card, and blacklist the old driver:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Enter your driver at the bottom down there, like the rest of the file.

Grabd your drivers, put the .inf and .sys a single folder, cd to that folder:

This installs them:

sudo ndiswrapper - i mydriver.inf

This adds an alias to wlan0:

sudo ndiswrapper -m

This will put it into your current modules:

sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

And finally:

sudo echo ndiswrapper &gt;/etc/modules

Will add it to your modules at boot!

ndiswrapper is a linux widget that allows you to use windows wireless drivers under linux. Its a dirty kludge, but sometimes it works better than the actual drivers. You should be able to find more info on the main ubuntu wiki/forums.

First dont use ndiswrapper, you have restricted driver management utility so dont go black listing drivers just yet. Open restricted driver management and install your card, then apt-get update and install the updates, via a ethernet connection, Reboot. Everything should work, or at least mine did.

Yeap that would be the one, first thing I did when I got it was nuke vista back to kingdom come. currently got it dual booting win xp and ubuntu.

I tried to use the restricted drives as soon as I noticed it wasn't working but didn't have any luck with it. Maybe my laptop is suffering from PMS or its an ubuntu 8.10 thing *shrugs*. In any case its all working now and I am pretty happy. Next time I format I will download and use the latest version of ubuntu (I probably should have done that from the start.

I still have one minor issue to work through and I honestly have no clue how to do it (and I am to tired and CBF searching). They Keyboard seems a bit temperamental and loads shit without me really clicking on it and is a right royal pain in the ass.

The problem with the restricted drivers, is that they are not developed well enough, different chipsets have a lot of problems.

The BCM43xx driver works for some, with just the right chipset, but it never did for me, so ndiswrapper was always my option.

Got any more specific information on your keyboard problem/device info?

Cheers for that extra piece of advice and especially the one on ndiswrapper not supporting monitor mode, I would have tried it a little down the track and been all like WTF NOW!

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that the inbuilt wireless card supports monitor mode but not packet injection. So as for getting some wifi fun on I would be waiting a hell of a long time. I am contemplating getting another card for the expansion slot when I come into some extra funds.

Sorry the keyboard explanation is a little vague but to be honest I have no idea what is causing it. I gave it a lil thought after following your suggestion and I am starting to think it may not be the keyboard but the mouse pad. To be more spacific I think it has something to do with the sensativity when double tapping the pad to open applications and what have you.... but I could be wrong. mmmm *wonders off to find the mouse config shit in ubuntu*

Ubuntu is odd, my Dell E6400 works perfectly under it, except for the power button which you can press all day without a reaction. It even stops the button from forcing a shutdown when you hold it down. Also, sudo passwd will let you enable the root account and use su instead of sudo. Saves time.

agreed ubuntu is old but I am somewhat comfortable using it. If I was to switch I would maybe consider fedora.

Damn that power button not working would be a pain in the ass if something crashed and you couldn't shutdown or re start. Waiting for a battery on fully charged would suck.

Oh I fixed that random shit launching problem, turns out it was that double tapping feature shit on the mouse pad (disabled that option and order was restored). Still I am not a huge fan of the laptop built in mouse, I think I will also invest in getting a wireless one when I get some dosh.

Should have installed windows first but no its all fine. There are tones of guides online, windows will rewrite the boot loader but you can change the settings in windows to boot linux.

I actually did install windows first, I learned that lesson the hard way about 9 months ago. Ah awesome that was exactly what I was looking for, thanks dingle your a legend.

Hey I was having a look at BT4 this morning and I really liked that widget thingie called conky, I ended up installing it and finding a basic script for it, I ended up editing it a little so it would give details for both my wireless and network cards and a couple of minor color tweaks. Anyways I was wondering what other funky scripts you lot are using for conky seeing as I suck at coding, care to share? XD
