  1. they should be fine, especially if they aren't used for a while before you ship them. when i bought my plasma tvs, the guys there said if i planned on moving or taking them anywhere after i set them up to let them cool off for atleast a few days first, then move it screen up if i have to lay it down, but thats plasmas, and crts are considerably older technology, correct? i say go for it, i've had a monitor on its front in storage for about 6 months now, and i plugged it in yesterday and it worked perfectly, if not better then before.
  2. nono i understand that i need to replace it, but the wires are what is burning, and i didnt touch it i just put my hand near it (i never claimed to be a smart person, infact i do many stupid things, its nothing to be ashamed of) but, the wires are screwed up, that is what was burning, i was talking about the power supply running rather hot (as it has no fan this is understandable. i stopped testing it because after i saw that it did start up i looked around at everything and saw that those wires were melted a little, so i saw no reason to finish testing it, as i know thats what it was. im thinking the wires were just too close to something that was running hot and thats what caused them to melt, because no smoke happened when they werent close to any other part), i just cant tell why they are that way. the only part i touched was the hard drive, to move it a little closer tothe rest of the pile of junk so the cables werent as streched out. however, it isn't $500, more like $175-200 not counting the parts i already had (hard drive and dvd drive). so i don't feel like pouring all of my money into it, but i would love it if it worked, and if that means a $30 power supply, so be it. anyway, ill be picking up a spare p/s tomorrow from a friend, since he has a bunch of computers he doesn't use and i fix the computers he breaks (for the most part), he said i could just have a couple. (hooray for freeness!)
  3. will do. as far as the multiple a/v stuff, i only have one that is active and a couple spyware stuff, but i have all the programs set up on my computer to accept all other programs currently on my computer (when i add a new program i go through and allow it with each program i have), but i really only use mcafee and spybot. really the only stuff that is accessed on that computer is email (nothing downloaded), bill paying sites, my bank account site, and youtube (sometimes keepvid.com if i want to download youtube videos), but other then thos evideos nothing is downloaded on it. but i do have mcafee site advisor on it, and i check before i go to new sites to see if they are ok. if i download anything i use an old laptop i got for 20 bucks from a guy i work with, its trash anyway so i don't really care if it gets messed up.
  4. well, that computer is used by id say atleast 7 people, and is online atleast 20 hours aday with SOMEONE using it, so its bound to have some stuff on it. no, i reinstalled itunes and quicktime 13 times, and windows once. but props for learning from scrubs, i wish everyone watched that show and applied it to real life, because there is actually a lot of truth in it.
  5. ahhh. told you i might have misunderstood lol. so, correct me if im wrong, but, this may be happening because a) it cant find a file (i don't think thats the case either), or b) the problem IS in the software, but the program is coded to go to a default warning message?
  6. no smoke, no fire, no stamps and no hockey. i have a hobby, its working on cars. computers, though, pretty much run my house and education, and sometimes entertainment (music and games). by hot i mean able to give first degree burns if you held your hand on the parts long enough, and thats with 2 fans (36inch and 20 inch) on high speed to cool the parts off.
  7. i will try it on a vm, but i disagree about using the cleaning programs, as i ran them all yesterday and i got about 7 different bugs with each (not bugs, cookies and other stuff, not too threatening, but enough) i didn't install anything special to clean itunes or anything, all i did was uninstall itunes , itunes updater, quicktime. restart, delete all registry values left over, restart, go into program files folder, delete all apple related folderes, restart, download new installer, install, restart. thats what many websites said to do to get it working and it still didn't work. but honestly, maybe you should think about rewording your future responses on this site, people are more likely to take you seriously and accept your help and even help you, if you don't imply that they are morons because they are doing stuff wrong or doing unnecessary stuff, because maybe its wrong or unnecessary for you, but it isn't for them. the insulting or w/e doesn't bother me, but if people are looking for tech help then they just want to get tech help, they don't want to fight or have to go over the same thing over and over again, otherwise they would call over seas tech support (and no I'm not being racist or anything, not everyone understands accents as well as others, and most tech support is over seas. that's why they go to sites such as this one)
  8. 1) i know, i was just saying the epp you did, meaning hak5, not anyone specifically 2) i wouldn't say dont insult me, because i could care less if anyone insulted me, but i do agree, it is out of my reach atleast, as i know nothing about programming. but from what i understand, from what your telling me im pretty much fucked until apple releases a new version, if they ever get around to fixing whatever is happening (if it is in the software end)? 3) so there might not be anything wrong with the programs themselves, it might be something to do with the computer? that is understandable, but i don't think that's what is happening because it's always been protected from viruses, and never been damaged in anyway (as far as dropping, lightning strikes *powersurges*, static, etc.), but if it was a bug that is happening in windows, then that would be completely understandable.
  9. pretty sure i said i completely reinstalled it several times (13 times to be exact), and it still didn't work, and since the epp. you did about buffer overflows doesn't load for me, i figured someone on here must have seen it and could help me. i don't have anything to lose, really, except time, which is kind of at a premium for me now since i start class a week from today.
  10. it ran -> just a little hot. i think i already siad im buying a new one, but if i can save this then i have plenty of uses for a spare computer, such as backing up all my music and photos, which ive already lost twice.
  11. i haven't gone to the magnificent wally world yet to buy some parts, I'm leaving in an hour (I've been working since this morning), when i get back ill test it out, if it doesn't boot ill take my air gun to it (450fps), and see if what kind of art i can make. (if your a little kid and reading this, don't play with guns or fire, and if you do, wear safety glasses when shooting pellets at hard objects such as computer components.)
  12. i've uninstalled it completely several times, all registry values too, anything to do with the word "apple" or "itunes" or "quicktime", even tried rolling back the computer to 2 weeks previous of when the error occured. only one program is running protection at one time, except when i download music and videos, in that case i scan the whole computer with several programs just to be sure that i didn't get any bugs. i didn't know that youtube was based on flash, i read somewhere it was based on quicktime? huh. well im glad it still works anyway. kodak doesn't work because it uses quicktime for it's videos and to run the kodak program, and when i open kodak it gives the same error message as quicktime and itunes, that a buffer over run had occured in quicktime and it can't safely continue.
  13. i was planing on changing a bunch of stuff in that case anyway, i just didn't plan on doing it this soon. i was also planning on doing just bare minimum at firs tand attaching one thing at a time, but as i said, i am positive its the power supply, not only becaus the fan is already burned out but because the only thing that has changed in that case is the placment of the extra power cable, so the cable from the power supply is causing trouble somewhere, be it just the cable itself or the cable touching a part in the computer. low end parts will be enough to run windows xp and make an arcade cab out of the computer? because thats what im going to do with this computer if i can save it rather cheaply, but i want it to retain some use for me (ie keeping winxp on the harddrive, and storing backups of my music on it if i can save it, if not then practice my soldering on the parts in the computer).
  14. Sounds like a problem Yet more issues... oh dear, these are unfortunately common problems are they easily curable problems? (note that i don't run more than one real time protection program at one time, i have the rest shut off, including the windows firewall as i have mcafee firewall).
  15. will do, hopefully it works out alright, and it is just hte power supply, because as i've stated before, i can never have too many spares of anything, even a spare of a spare.
  16. i doubt thats all there is to it, and you even proved my point. i can't put it on laminated mdf, so what should i put it on? ive never done testing on a pc outside of a case before, so excuse me if i don't know all the tricks of doing it. i know i have to take it out of the case and put it back together and i know how to. i understood that from the start but what i don't understand where im supposed to do it, what im supposed to do it on and how i would ground it, or if theres even a need to in this case.
  17. i do believe i know how to handle fire, and i do believe i know what to do if it gets out of control. i was just saying that compressed air wouldnt help me, it's not that i don't know what to do with fire, its that i don't know how to test a computer outside of the case
  18. haha, the spyware prevention software i have measures threats in levels of color, much like the level of forrest fire threat or terrorism threat. and as far as i can tell, yellow level cookies are things like tool bars (starware or w/e its called) and it doesn't remove them unless you do it manually. so its like a number scale, from one to five, 1 is white (nothing at risk), 2 is yellow (cookies that you accepted), 3 being orange (elevated risk), 4 is redorange (actual viruses and Trojans), and 5 is red (complete lockdown, shuts off internet connection and all communication to other computers. someones been looking at some naughty stuff lol) (i found the article of how to get it free: http://www.i-hack.org/computer/software/ho...nti-virus.html)
  19. how about the cement floor then? or i have a big rubbermaid container, i can put it on the top of that can't i, to insulate it? but that would just melt wouldnt it? air would also just make the fire bigger so compressed air wouldn't help me. i think im going to keep it in the case but try it with the side off, unplug everything but the m/b, then shut it off, add a card, try it, shut it off, add another card, etc etc. untill i find out whats happening. though im almost certain i can find it without testing it, and i bet it is that cable i have on top of the dvd drive. if it is im glad because i get another spare computer andi still just have to replace the powersupply! HOORAY FOR SPARE COMPUTERS!
  20. wow i have alot of computer problems lol. i've searched all over google, tried many of the hits there but none of them worked. what it is, on my new computer, itunes and quicktime just stopped working (though i can still use youtube). because quicktime stopped working, i can't use kodak easyshare software to unload my camera from a party i had a while ago. so basically, itunes i think is fine, and i know kodak is fine, whats wrong is quicktime is screwwing up. when i open it, it says that a buffer overflow or over run ( i dont remember the exact words) has occurred that has corrupted the internal state and cannot continure in a safe fashion. what is going wrong with it? and how do i fix it? this computer is only a few months old (7 at most), and i run antispyware, antivirus, anti-everything imaginable on it, several times a week, including one fulltime, realtime protection (mcafee suit). so i shouldn't have any viruses or spyware, and i know i don't have any cookies on it. it just stopped working all of a sudden a couple months ago, and now that i have class in a few days, im not going to have time to try to fix it, and ill be stuck without new music and videos for until my vacation in November (too long to go without music in my opinion). i do have an ipod, and i like the itunes interface unlike alot of people, but i don't understand how this happened or how to fix it. i know that apple could fix it with a patch but its been several months with no patch and i can't stand no music anymore. is this a common problem? i know it has to do with when i updated to the newest version of itunes (7.3.2) and quicktime (7.2), and if it is a wide spread issue, most of the users of itunes are windows based, and if its compatibility issues with windows, does apple realize that if they don't fix it soon that they are going to lose that many customers and users? any help will be greatly appreciated.
  21. haha, so if i just put the guts on a counter top hooked up like usual it will be fine? or would i need to ground it to the case or something... in my work shop in the basement (cement walls and floor of course), i have a counter made of mdf base and a regular counter top (mdf), if i just put it on that it would be fine? ill try it out tonight when i get back from picking up a few parts for another computer and another project of mine (arcade cab. i was jealous of yours! lol). im not at all worried, except maybe the hard drive but thats rugged enough when its not in operation. but like i said, new computer tomorrow or the day after so this one is pretty much something to do on the weekends (or maybe the basis of the arcade cab. or another project? maybe i can hack it up and put it in my car, since i wanted to make a car computer anyway) anyway, thanks for allthe help!
  22. they onlyask about once a year, but they do surf the internet alot so they get alot of cookies and stuff, it's not that they have a bunch of porn lol. i was just saying that if your worried about tracking cookies, and basic spyware you should have a couple of good programs (even if you only use one) to get rid of them since a/v software doesn't block cookies unless they are malicious, and a majority of the cookies i get aren't considered malicious by any of the a/v ive tried so fay, they say its a level yellow and they only start deleting them and blocking them at level orange. but agreed, you shouldn't need more then one av (to scan the computer when you decide, not real time protection), one spyware(again, not real time) one regular scanner (real time turns on with the computer just like a firewall, infact, thats what it is in some cases). for me though, having spares of everything is always a necessity. so i enjoy the fact that if one thing fucks up (be it the computer itself or one a/v program) i have spares of other software that does basically the same thing. i don't even need them installed, i just burn them to a cd or put them on my thumb drive (sometimes both), and i just keep them there in case something happens. i think it was hak.5 where this was mentioned but im not sure, "everyone would like to back up but no one thinks of backing their data up until its too late" (which is why im going out to buy me a brand new 160gb hard drive in a raid1 array for my dell). other then having spares, what are you going to do? some viruses and worms shut off your internet connection AND disable your virus detection stuff, then your pretty well fucked unless you have spares on hand or have backup methods of getting rid of the bad stuff, am i right? however, it's not my data that is on the line, so do what you want. you will be wishing you listened to people such as vako and my self who are telling you its better to be safe then sorry, and i don't know about him, but i know that i learned this through experience not once, but several times. so take care of your stuff and you won't be begging to be bailed out oh; just to clear it up: i don't use warez(d) antispyware, at least i don't consider it warez, and id never use that kind because its probably a trap all on its own. warez is something you download through like p2p, right? this is the actual program. you download it off the mcafee site, its just you get the program for one year instead of the usual 31 day demo (i think its a one month demo anyway). this banking site has a license i guess and they offer it to their customers but they don't make you sign in to download it, you click on login, log out, and scroll down and theres a link to get it for a year, takes you right to the mcafee site and you download it after you make an account, you just fill in a spare email address and you download the program, install it and you have the mcafee suit for one year, free. warez is something you download through p2p networks or something, or you illegally download it... this isn't illegal, its just a workaround for a webstie that has a license to distribute it (well link to it) for free. so if its illegal then i must have understood it incorrectly but im almost positive i didn't. in any case, its the real full legal program, direct from mcafee. with the same annoying popup messages of what its doing ("scan commencing" "scan done" etc)!
  23. agreed. the only reasons i use mcafee is because i got 3 years of it with my new computer last year and becuase i get it for free now (not only because of the hack on ihack, but because a guy my mom worked with and was friends with was also a computer tech and i took my computers to him for a cleaning, and he told me how he could set up mcafee for me and give me a ten year demo of it with free updates, so i jumped at that opportunity lol) but yes, it is totally agreed that at default settings that only one antivirus should be installed at one time along with x number of programs just to scan at your own will. that would be more than enough for an average user. the warnings though, those are the things that make or break a program for me. they are stupid warnings like "scan commencing now" "scan would like access" "scan found 4 items" "scan complete" ---> I DON"T NEED THESE WARNINGS, all the programs i have play a sound when it's done, thats good enough for me. would avg be a good program to keep on a usb stick for when you're fixing someones computer and need a quick tool to clean up the system? right now i have all the programs i mentioned before, i use spybot to do a quick cleaning then i go in with mcafee, avast, ad aware, ccleaner (i know this isn't a spyware thing, but it can take an unbelievable amount of unused data off the hard drive and cover your steps, first time i ran it it took about 15gigs off of my hard drive, all history, recently used documents, etc.) and i think i have one other but the name escapes me. using all these tools, especially on an older system, can take some time though, which is why im looking for some alternatives to get the job done that much quicker. even on a new high end computer, they can still take a good 2-3 hours.
  24. the connecters also may be the culprit, as i have an extra chain of 6 comming off the powersupply, and i just zip tied them together and threw them ontop of the dvd drive. but im pretty sure i can just look and see what was burning now, it smoked for a while after words so thats why im pretty sure it was something to do with the power supply, as that retains power for a while after its unplugged, correct? in any case, what ever burned melted (obviously), so i should be able to tell what it is without testing it again. how would i go about testing it outside of the case? i know it cant be on anything conductive, but i don't know how to litterly take everythign out and test it because there are alot of parts in there that are really sensitive, aren't there? anyway, im pretty sure im going to put it away in my garage somewhere just to practice soldering and such on it, as i found a new computer and im going to go pick it up tomorrow or the next day ( i think its an hp, but i had 3 comuters so it might be a compaq or a gateway. 3gb ram, 750gb hard drive, nvidia 7150se i think, 19inch wide screen lcd) and to go with that since i had originally thought it was going to cost much more, (the computer itself runs for about $800 this week at best buy, on sale), im picking up a 22 or 24 inch monitor, which at my local store is $260 for the 22 inch, and $350 for the 24 inch, which combined with the cost of the computer is what i expected to pay for the computer in the first place.
  25. not at all. well it might if you have them running at the same time, idk, but if you only have one running constantly, and then once a week or so run scans with several av programs at once to remove anything you might have gotten then it should would perfectly, it is when i do it. as someone on here said, a/v applications tend to be ram hogs, they can really slow down your system (which is ironic since they are supposed to get rid of spy ware to speed up your system right? lol) though make sure you have all your settings correct if your only running the one program, because if it lets one things through and you don't catch it because you don't scan with other programs, that one thing could be the thing that does in your computer (trust me, i know this from experience :???:) but if avg is as good as people are saying, you should be all set if you set your preferences right. i still advise to keep a couple extra programs like spybot ad aware avast and mcafee though, (i keep them on my spare usb drive and on my computer, just because if i get a virus that does something to those programs i can still attack with the usb drive... i have alot of sensitive data on my computer, so i want to be covered from as many angles as i can lol) just in case because if you do get some spy ware or Trojans, they do a good job at getting rid of them for the most part, and i think mcafee will disconnect you from the network if it detects a Trojan that is spread over the network? (you don't have to get it from your own network, but it can automatically spread to all computers on your network) also, ill be trying out avg too, to see how that compares speedwise with mcafee, if its faster and of equal quality to mcafee ill be sticking with it =] if not, oh well. just another scanning/removal program i can use lol
