  1. i'm not set in stone about that, but i do like the layout of a mac; the only down fall is the smallish screen size (15"). dell is where i was heading if i didn't get a macbook/pro, because they are pretty cheap and good quality (had a dell computer kicking around for ever now). i'll probably end up getting dell just because it's cheaper to get an above average notebook from them than it is to get a decent one from apple
  2. i'm going to college next january (spring semester... hooray for graduating early!) and i need to buy a computer. what do you recommend for this? basically im looking for something that can hold/burn all my music and movies, has a rather large display and will last (and doesn't run really hot like both gateways i have). I'm thinking the macbook pro? also; do you think i should wait and buy a new laptop a little before i leave or is a few months better so i can get used to the new computer? also ill want to hook it up to my projector (im buying one when i sell the projects i made in advanced wood working). any suggestions?
  3. is there a particular cooler setup you reccomend? i've seen a few for like 30 bucks and some for more than 80. I don't want to spend too much on it, because i soon have to buy a laptop for college, at which point i won't use the old laptop much.
  4. i hold the power button until it shuts off, instead of start> turn off> shut down
  5. thanks; so it isn't the power button thats causing the issue? because i only started using the button a year ago and it started about a month after that... the only soft ware i have on the computer is like the stuff that comes with the laptop, itunes, limewire, bit comet, bit tornado, google video, daemon tools and the sims 2. nothing EXTREAMLY out of the ordinary, that would cause this problem is it? (its pretty stripped down i just use this laptop for internet and sometimes some music and videos)
  6. sometimes when i don't have time i use the power button on my laptop; and every month or so it screws up and says its missing the system file and once i run the setup disk (repair... chkdsk /r) it freezes, i shut it off for 5 minutes because it gets really hot, turn it on and its fine. is there something that will fix this? i use the power button because i don't have time to hold my laptop until it shuts off because the fan never stops and the laptop over heats if its set on a surface (so whenever i use it i have to prop it up on something to get alot of air flow, which doesn't exactly make it easy to use) and another question i had about my laptop is an error (ill attach a picture) it says: the procedure entry point getprocessimagefilenamew could not be located in the D/L/L PSAPI.DLL and the title bar says something about smartbridge... it isn't really bad as far as i can tell, its just annoying to have to click ok everytime i start my laptop. any help is greatly appreciated :-D
  7. i've got a linksys (the kind they used for power over ethernet). and when i only have one going (if is anywhere from 1 to 100... 100 seems to be the max alloud) it isn't so bad, but usually i set 3-5 going and either go to school, go to the store, work, etc. but alot of the time now im doing work on the computer and i need the internet for that. i already set up bittorrent (its set for 75% max download and 1/3 max upload). sorry for the long delay in response, i was swamped with finals :?.
  8. i've got a wireless home network, with (i think anyway) 6 computers connected to it. my problem is that whenever i do any downloading (bit torrent, limewire etc) it slows down the entire network past the point of dial up. i have dsl but using an internet speed tester (i forget the site) it says i get speeds of more than t-1. is this just a typical event with p2p applications? and if so is there away to set up "two" networks from one dsl box, one for p2p (left on almost 24/7) and one for regular internet/games? if anyone helps me with this ill be eternally thankful
  9. so its basically not even worth it, if even possible. thats all i wanted to know
  10. im reading up on putting linux on ps2, and on one of the sites i went to it says it has direct rdram, but only 32 mb of it. if i took the rdram out of my computer (256 mbx1) and put it in place of the 32mb ram, would it work at all? and if so would it make it faster or would it limit the speed to 32 mb anyway...
  11. if the video card i have didn't have video out for tv (well they.. i have 2, and svideo out, rca out, dvi out, vga out, and i have an adaptor to make dvi to hdmi) id look for something like this
  12. is there an ipod software thats like itunes? (included video player, syncs ipods, buy music and videos) or even a better one (like one where i can backup ipods to the computer... i have 4 ipods and half of the music i have is from friends computers)
  13. whats a good free os for a media center? i thought about windows but i dont want to pay for it, and i need it to be able to support alot of programs (itunes, vlc, firefox, bit torrent, limewire) and i need it to be able to connect to other computers on my network to act as a music server at the same time (at the moment there are 5 xp home and 1 xp media centers on my network). the media center is in my kitchen and i cant move that, and i don't want to spend alot of money on this project (at most 200. thats for a video card, memory and high def cables.)
  14. oh; and being able to watch podcasts and iptv on this thing (which goes with firefox/internet i guess) would be a major bonus.
  15. hey guys. I've gotten my hands on yet another computer.. sort of. the short story is one of my directv dvrs stopped working with the satellites, so they sent me a new one (it was supposed to be standard def, but they sent highdef and they said i could keep it since it was their mistake ) the second the new receiver was working i tore open the old one and discovered it had a nice 160GB hard drive in it. at first i was going to just wipe it and store music and videos on it, but then i got to thinking and i decided i want to try to use the whole receiver as a media center. the drive is in good working condition as far as i know (and if not than i have plenty to replace it with). i want to be able to use all the video ports and stuff on the back of the receiver, and it would be awesome if the remote could be the mouse/keyboard/media controller. the model is directv r15, if that helps. i know it won't be a spectacular media center, but it is a rather fast m/b that it has in there (it loads the 24 hour concert that was preformed this summer in about a minute). the only thing i need (want) to do with this is put music and videos on it. if i can get it to the point where i can run firefox, or even limewire/bit torrent/other programs on it, that would be super. id also like to make use of the 2 on board usb ports, for wireless adapter and external harddrives and/or wireless keyboard/mouse. the reason i want to use this receiver instead of just tearing out the harddrive is because of the video capabilities: I'm not sure, but i think it has at least 4 different video outs, 2-3 video ins on top of the 2 antenna ins. as of now, i have the harddrive installed on my desktop, I'm going to look around it later and try to get the videos off it that i recorded on directv. but after that id like to load media center or possibly another edition of windows, or, if firefox and itunes will work with it (i like itunes and firefox, i know they aren't the best of the best, but i like the interface), than a version of Linux or something else. is this media center totally out of the realm of possibility? or is it something easily taken out in a couple days... the only problems i can think of are: not enough ram (I'm not sure how much is on there now, but i can tell it isn't much, ill check later), not being able to get drivers for the ports.
  16. would this be the one? http://dl.tv/2007/12/dltv_episode_207_power_inverte_1.php
  17. i'll check it out tomorrow, im headed for bed right now after 3 hours fixing my moms computer (turns out poweriso fucks up my computer, it takes away all features like start menu and appearence, and also makes the computer take 18 minutes to start up. after uninstalling it, im left with the normal setup of the computer and an unreadable .daa file, if anyone wants to take a crack at reading that without poweriso)
  18. no, i've read up about car computers before, i just don't know where to start with it... it's best to use the inverter and powersupply, because it supplies a more stable power current, but using car power is possible but it isn't anywhere near as reliable as using the inverter, power supply (and possibly a whole nother capaciter)
  19. under, the seats sit right against the back (its a supercrew ford f150)
  20. i test for my license tomorrow (can't wait, it's supposed to be snowing at the time i go and supposed to get up to an inch lol). but as far as cars go, what is involved with putting a computer in a car? the main thing in interested in is playing music and movies from a computer, but a wireless card would be nice at the same time, both for wireless internet at the places i drive to, and wireless music syncing to the car. a full on computer would also be sweet, but basic music (itunes, vlc) and internet (firefox) are all im really interested in as a bare minimum. i live in an area where it snows from november sometimes (usually december) to march, and temps get well below freezing, but i don't think temp will be an issue as long as i let the car warm up for a while before (which i do anyway, atleast 10 minutes) as like the far end of the spectrum, though, id like atleast one (possibly 2) monitors, wireless internet, great speed for games, 900ish gb harddrives (250gb for regular files, 300gbx2 mirrored drives for videos and music) and a car program/cable setup that lets me run timings and info from the car to the computer with special software. i know this is all possible, but how do i go about it? i know harddrives arent supposed to be moved alot during operation, but is 0-100mph too much movement? (not saying ill be going that fast, just covering the speed of the car). also, since space in cars is at a premium (its actually a truck, so i dont have a trunk to put this in), what are some case options that will easily fit under truck seats (id say its about 6-7 inches of space between the seat and the floor, but it might be more, no more than 10 though)
  21. no, i am giving the os and cd away for free, the only thing im making money on is the parts i put in the computer plus whatever they want to give me (usually when my friends buy things from me they give me like a 1/3 premium on at-cost price), and they'll all get a copy of a recite so they'll know i didnt pay for windows or recovery disk but if i were to sell them to friends and make them pay 50 or 100 bucks for it then yes id say i was an ass.. now people im not fond of on the other hand... :-Dhaha
  22. no need to reinstall now i guess, i used repair from the cd to fix the install. i see where you were coming from, as usually recovery cds come with laptops (atleast of the 3 i've bought) but this one is just a bottom line xp home install disk.
  23. im not selling them, just including them on a computer im selling...
