  1. very impressive. i have a cogeco cable box running into a linsys wrt54g.

the wrt54g branches out into a pc, and a 5 port hub, (the fifth port doesnt work)the pc is my fathers, and i also use it as it is about 3 time more powerful than my OC'ed pIII which runs off the hub. also my 360 runs off the hub.

    thats it. 2 pcs, a xbox 360, 1 5port hub, and a router.

at my mom's house, we have an ibook, a laptop, and an mdg box running straight off a wrt54g

not very impressive, but theirs 2 networks in 2 locations, so, like the russians, quantity has a quality all of its own.

but your network is amazing famicoman

i may upgrade it later by adding a NAS box, and occasionally my sis runs her laptop off the wifi when she comes over.

btw, nice choice in the wrt54g famicoman, its quite popular. out of three different 'cheap-ish' wireless routers, i found the wrt54g to be the best.

  2. i just tried, this is pretty neat, i woulda never thoughta saving the tree command's results.

then again, i thought i would never see a dos-like prompt ever since i sold all my dos games....

and the fact that it is oddly satisfying....

anyways... this'll be great to convince my programming teacher, who despite his title, knows very little about computers and manipulating them, that im doing work, so he wont assign me new projects cuz i just finished the last one in record time.

i'm VERY good at programming class.

  3. a few things i should establish:

1- its not a name brand, not compaq, dell, etc. its got a sona and/or allaiance sticker on it.

2- it doesnt even have a hard drive in it.

3- i would never send to a tech support / repair guy. because they either treat me like an idiot, or charge out the wazoole.

and, sorry it s late but i havent been able to even try and run it as i cant find a power cable, i may just borrow one from this one that i am using now, or steal one from my schools scrap pile ;)

i have also talkeds to a freind about parts...... a 1.2 gig drive aint gonna cut it, even if i want to run linux on this mofo.

he may get me a 4 gig drive and the power cables i need.

i just need a graphics card and this could be a decent gamin rig, or at least better than my current one : a pIII 880mhz with geforce 2 mx 200

i personally try to stay away from name brand boxes, the custom build or not-quite-so-mass-produced-by-a-company-who-assumes-all-thier-customers-are-idiots boxes are of better quality, plus you dont deal with proprietary bull, inability to OC, and general attempts to force you to use thier services.

also, no worrys about hard drive, i dont even have one in yet.

and im really serious about anybody with spare parts donating them, would be a great help.

if all else fail, i may have to try to sell the parts......

in other news, im trying to get a freind to overclock his pentium 233mhz, its hard to convince him that randomly moving jumpers will work.

anyone know any good sites for OCing with jumpers?

  4. well i have tryed swapping video cards, ive tried the onboard, a geforce2 mx200 (which i know works) and a ati rageII (ya, ive got some really old parts.) nothing.

the ram is ddr, being as when it was bought it only came with one, and it used to work. also it says ddr on the package.

    i dont have a manual...

unfortunatly, i dont think i have any compatable parts available at the moment, apart from video card... i dont have a spare cpu, ram, or mobo. but i think i may be able to get ahold of something. a freind has a hp dx2000, its running ddr, socket 478, intel p4 so its just a newer version of same stuff.

im positive the power supply works.. but then again, im not an expert, if need be, ill try swapping that.

but first i think ill try resetting the cmos, i allways prefer to try swapping aout hardware last.

the biggest problem with it is gonna be that ill need a new harddrive.

unless i want to canabalize my pIII

odds are, if it is a hardware problem, ill just gut the thing and leave it be.

im not gonna buy parts to get something that outdated up and running when i dont need to.

but if someone wants to send me parts, i wont complain!

oh ya, i cant figure out how to get a speaker working on this.. cant find the connection for it. i should try to DL the manual.

EDIT: have looked up board on internet, it is 845GRG by intel. i have dled the manuals, and found out two things:

1- the speaker has been set to output to rear speakers as opposed to front speaker.

2- 1 beep doesnt mean ok, 0 beeps means the system is operating properly.

its a little late for me to go hookin up power cords and monitors now, so i will wait till tomorrow afternoon. expect update sometime around 5-6 EST tuesday.

  5. i have a p4 1.7ghz (better than my pIII 880mhz)

i cannot get it to run.

when i plug it in a light lights up on the mobo, which means the board has power. when i turn it on, the fans whir up, etc.

i get no image from my monitor. just black, then standby mode.

also, what does it take, space-wise, to install xp pro.

i would like people to suggest potential problems and solutions. i will try to try all of the solutions one at a time to get this machine up 'n' running.

i have some spare parts lying around to swap in and out.

  6. in fact, my pentium III coppermine (the cooler of the 2 pentium III designs) that is normally at 733mhz, and is OC'ed to 880mhz, peaks higher, it peaks at 52C, the only way a core 2 dou could run hotter is the ambient temperature.

  7. i dont know what on earth you guys are doing with the core 2 duos, ive seen the 6800 on a freinds computer that i helped build, we put a stock cooler from the p4 prescott 3.4ghz, on, and she idels at 21C and when fully loaded, (sandra sisoft, 16 loops) the cpu never broke 48C, and this is at 3.15ghz OC'ed. you guys are either lying through you teeth, or are seriously messed up. being as the core 2 duos dont have ANY amd cpus that run cooler (at least that have been made in the past 2 years) this has been stated officicialy and tested and proved by third party groups. whether you want to admit it or not, intel is back in the drivers seat, and there is nothing amd can do about it.

  8. if you want to know which ones perform better, clockspeed can tell you which ones preform better within a single chip design, for example, a 2ghz core 2 duo is less powerful than the 2.6ghz model. however when you branch out clockspeed is not an indicator. ex: intel p4 3ghz < core 2 duo 2ghz. and even worse when you go into different manufacturers.

its hard to compare amd to intel nowadays, because although with the new core 2 duo lineup, intels processors are more powerful, amd has lowered the prices on all their proccessors, to effectively make thier hig end processors compete with midrange intel line-ups. so now its getting close performance to price ratio-wise. which brings me to my next point. price. the more expensive, the better. GENERALLY. also, if you have a processor that is between pentium III and pentium 4/D AMD comparable proccessors (price wise) are better. if you have anything newer or older, intel simply blows amd out of the water.

i have heard reputable reports that for pentium 3's and 4's to compare to amd's processors, if the pentium is 70%-140% higher clockspeed, it is generally abouty the same performance wise.

but like SomeoneElse said, and VaKo basically elaborated on, you cannot just look at a catalogue to understand which proccessors are better just by thier stated numbers. you must do some research into it and compare benchmarks. a site i find useful for this, as it is quite extensive and yet fairly easy to understand, is www.xbitlabs.com

but even if you look at performance, there are other factors you have to look at. amds processors, are a lot less efficent power consumption wise, than intels processors, but if you go back to the p4 era, the trend is reversed.

in final, research, dont be lazy/compulsive about your decisions on chips, take the time to find out what they can and cant do, and how they compare, dont just be a n00b and compare ghz, or model numbers.

    (sorry for long post)

  9. i dont own all these computeres, but i will post them as i use them on a regualar basis. (i have a split family)

    my gaming rig:

    pIII coppermine, 733mhz, OC'ed to 880mhz

    ASUS CUSL2 mobo

    384 megs ram

    geforce2 mx200

    creative soundblaster CT4830 (i think)

36gb main drive (with pagefile reduced to almost nothing)

3.6 gb drive for pagefile only

    17"crt 9samsung syncmaster 753df)

xp pro (all the fancy features turned off so it appears like win98, improves performance)

    (its pretty bad lol)

    my father's rig

    p4 3ghz with hyperthreading

    1 gig kingston ram

    80 gig drive

    onboard graphics

    19" toshiba lcd display

    my grandma's rig

    celeron D 3ghz

    512 megs of ram

    onboard graphics

    160 gig drive

    17" benQ LCD

    my moms video editing laptop

    amd turion 64 1.86 ghz

    1 gig ram

    80 gig drive

    compaq presario vs2000

    greg's audio ibook

g4 (i dont even know which processor, but it was the more expensive model, bought 1 week before apple put out the intel powered macbooks)

    1 gig ram

    40 gig drive

the ibook, compaq laptop, and the celeron are all at one location and networked together running on dsl that clocks on avg 1.5-2 mbps

the pIII and the p4 as well as an xbox 360 are on a network at another location (my usual place of habitation) they are on cable internet which averages from 6.5 to 10 mbps. i like to brag about it.

i spend most of my time at the pIII/p4 location, but am at the ibook/compaq/celeron location at least every second weekend.

i am effectively the adminstrator of all these systems. i maintain, update, and care for all of them.

  10. actually sounds like a great idea, although clusters are traditionally made from old components... it'd be great if you could find all the components used... its not like you need top-o-the line for clusters.

  11. thx... ill try the factory reset. not now though. unfortunately i am not at location of said router. (although this router is same model and i do not know password either....i just dont care here) i wont be at said location till monday, and i have to go to a LAN party on monday for 12 hours. and get this: the reason im invited is because i know the most about networking..... otherwise i wouldnt be going. my p3 doesnt handle company of heroes so one of them is bringing his extra pc.

and i dont want to take the falsh mem outta the box. i didnt pay for the router and im not the only one using it so i dont feel comfortable doing any hardware stuff to it. which is wierd, cuz im willing to do software hacking to it, but im more skilled at the hardware aspect. oh well.

btw. i was wondering if it would be possible to make a amplification/booster system for the wrt54g... kinda like a whole bunch of low-powered boxes (like p3 733's)(overclocked to 880-990 of course) with a wireless g card and a transmitter that recieve the signal, then amplify it and transmit.

these boxes would be placed at strategic intervals, with redundancy galore, and would all act to create a giant network over long distances to give people i know who are unable to get internet other than dial-up(like my friends in the outskirts) access to my cable internet thats reaches 10 mbps.

this would be kind of a cool way to screw over the isp's.

it would all link back to one router which would then go through a pc that would act as a firewall and restrict who could use it before sending them through to the tubes.

it would be a hell of a job.... but to do it would help create a model for municipalities who are toying with the idea of putting up a wireless network to allow all citizens of said municipality access to the internet for either free or realy cheaply.

  12. i cant remember my router username and password.......

(its been 4 years since ive used it)

is there a way to find out what it is?

(hey, its a legitimate excuse to hack, so i expect a lot of replies :) )

  13. updates: (yay) i just got a 32 mb siluro geforce2 mx 200 graphics card. ( i know it is the definition of crap, but its better than ancient 82815 intel onboard) so now i can actuall get a decent framerate when watching movies (labrats wont run seamlessly on this, nor will the divx stage6 version of hak5) and im not sure if i even want to try overclocking because i figure its so old even overclocked its way beyond obsolete.

but now im thinking about getting another monitor and trying dual monitor with the mx 200 and the onboard, if its possible. which i think it is.

  14. thanks for the advice, the holesaw is just a specialdrill bit right, the one that is just a saw bent into a circle, right, because if thats what you are talking about then i have one.

and unfortunately, i dont like like liguid cooling, its just screaming for an accidental leak or something. and its expoensive. so is liquid nitrogen.

but sinceim running a coppermine i really dont need excessive cooling..

boy what i wouldnt do for a core 2 duo and compatible hardware.

and not to start a rant, but you amd fans should staop trying to convince me amd still has the most powerful chips, you in denile, admit it, accept it, and embrace it.

    join the dark side.

prolly sometime during the next week 9its march break) im gonna go out to a computer store near where my mom lives. it supposedly sells used parts, which is what i need. cmon lady luck, gimmme a 512 meg stick of sdram

  15. you can call me a noob if you want but i was improving airflow in my case the other day and toasted an IDE cable trying to round it before i figured the right way to do it... so now im gonna get advice on future mods... it'll cave me on parts.

i wanna know any advice about hooking up a 120 mm fan to run on 7v, and i need to dremel me up a hole for it, advice?

also any suggestions for cheap and easy cooling/ preformance mods would be welcome, this old p3 needs all the love she can get.

  16. i have a p3 730mhz running at 880 mhz, stable (trust me its been a month, and not even over 50 degrees)

it has 2 128 meg sdram modules, i would love to upgrade but the cusl2 maxes ram out at 512 megs. so even when i do increase it i want to know how to optimize what ram i have.

i allready have a 3 gig hard drive dedicated as a virtual memory drive

so i need to know any other ways to get the most out of my ram.

dont worry about my processor i can oc it some more (im still at stock voltage, but temp is becoming an issue) but for that i need to use my dremel, which means i need new cutting wheels.

and im not worried about graphix yet, although if anyone could recomend a good agp pro 4x card i would appreciate it.

but most of all i need to optimize my RAM.

thanksfor your posts on my previous issue, with this old PC i will definately need to keep this thread alive for a while.

  17. i got it fixed, it was the cable positions

i had three cables, 40 ft grey, 20ft grey and 25ft black, the 40ft was runnin into the hub and then the 20 ft was runnin into my comp and the 25 ft was running into the 360.

when i configured it so that the 20ft cable was running into the hub, the 25 foot from the hub to the comp and the 40ft from the hub to the 360. now all is running fine.

i am on a downloading blitz.

now on to the next issue:

  18. well, the coax cable is plit only once and that is where it comes into my house. i cant run it any closer, and i have tried the box with no security features active at all and it still does not work (and i dont think i need to mess with the router's settings because the comp running straight off the router is fine.

this started after i got back from a systemlink game with 4 xbox360s, so i hadto bring all my network cables and my hub, but when i got back i set it up differently, ill try returning the wires to thier original configuration (which i dont see how it could fix it, but it is the only thing that changed at the time ofthe problem) ill have to try later on tho, it means i have to pull em outta walls so ima gonna wait till the weekend, plus, i have a load of hmwk.
