  1. Well exactly that's kind of my point... I'm working toward my MCSE, but I don't claim for a second to know much about networking, I mean ok I've got the basics and can trouble shoot, but thats what we have Network Admins for? I am a big beliver about having specalists do what they are good at... I wouldn't hire a MCSE to monitor my linux network or network security ;) but then again I've "blagged" my skills at an invterview so there might be some validity to your claims :D

  2. The Static is BS IMO many years ago I was the most junior person at an IT Consultancy and on average we where knocking out 10-20 PC's per week, all I did while building them was touch a table leg, I have never overly taken precautions and I belive the "killer" static is a myth brough about by big coperations so that people who don't know what they are doing are scare mongered into paying to have RAM upgrades etc done for them.

Ok your between a rock and hard place my friend. I would be looking at these things

    1. Connections between Power Button and motherboard (just double check everything is right)

    2. Try another Power Supply

    3. Try another processor in that motherboard

    4. Try another motherboard

I had a very similar issue with one of our older PC's, fans would just spin, I replaced the motherboard and the problem was still there, so ended up replacing the CPU (at a grand cost of £9/$18 from eBay :D) it was an old pc but I needed a spare box.

  3. Then something is bonked with your version of Active@ did you actually pay $60 for a license? If so drop the supplier an email and raise the question with them...

Also that article I posted does list other tools for resetting the Administrator password, tried any of them?

You won't be able to use the Guest account, I can't remember the exact details but there is something about the guest account on Server 2K3

  4. I would say that the temperature is OK, Laptops as you'll be aware have a short lifespan than that of a PC and I think alot of it is due to the temperatures they run at.

If you have the choice in future go for a Latitude over an Inspiron, imo they are worth the little extra.

  5. Assuming it is an XP Box, then gaining local admin access is simple.

I belive it's been done or commented on 1 or 2 Hak5 Episodes... it would appear you do not watch the show?

Once you have admin access I guess you could sit there and hope they are using the default domain administrator account and sniff packets for that SID... I am guessing this is a Linux based network given that you've said "root" admin

  6. I learnt PHP myself, which is probally why I struggle sometimes (especially with security) I work in a way where If I can see something working, and I have the source I can rip it apart and trying to made addons etc, I remember learning basic HTML from 3 webpages - AOL, Compuserve and some other random offline website opened the files in notepad and started subsituting background=white to red... save and see what happens.

PHP is so commonly used that Google is probally better than any book, W3schools has all the basic tutorials, hotscripts will provide quick scripts, and php.net has all the php functions listed :P

  7. Vista x64 is significantly better than XP x64. Driver support is better, application support (what little there is for x64 right now) is better, and from what I hear, it's generally more stable.

XP Pro x86 is still the best in terms of compatibility with older apps but that will change, while XP is the most compatible I've found that for the most part, Vista (x86/x64) isn't far behind.

The only thing you do have to watch for with Vista x64 is if you don't have signed drivers, they won't be able to work properly. For example, to use my TV/capture card in Vista x64 I have to choose to disable signed driver checking every time I boot. The card is very old though, and in all fairness it was too old when XP was released so I can't fault Vista for not supporting it. All my other hardware works flawlessly though, so thumbs up there.

Good info, my box is only a year or so old, I think the only thing I'll lose is my "Eye Toy Play" webcam ;) which isn't a loss at all really. How is Vista x64 looking for SLI support? Moving to Vista x64 could spark a buying spree as depending on answer I'd need a new graphics card :P as my 2 7600GT's would be useless 8600 here I come, no SLI :P so Dual 22" Monitors, no web cam :P couple of IP Cam round the house  there' most of next months pay gone :D

  8. You may have read that my HDD fell over a few weeks ago, well last night it finally gave up the ghost so I have a new drive arriving tomorrow.

Anyway, I am just wondering what OS to gun for, I tried XP PRO x64 when it was an early release (2-3 years ago)

I have a Vista Ultimate x64 and am wondering if this is going to be any better than XP? What is driver support like for the x64 platform now? What's application support like? Would I be better off just sticking with XP PRO x86?

  9. Answer to question 1 is both.

Answer to the second question is PHP, depending on your budget and also the size of your Business, you could either host your webserver on an internal server (could be Windows XP - limited # of connections, Windows Server - $$$ or even Linux - ???) You could also get some external hosting.

  10. Ok, not a lot of relevant information in your question so this will be difficult.

Firstly what do you want to do with this server?

I guess we are to assume that your network is fairly basic, with your client and server running off the router, and the router handing out DHCP, DNS etc, which is fine.

First thing to check is that the server has been assigned an IP by the router, to do this open a command prompt on the server and type ipconfig /all

The command prompt will display a whole host of information; you’ll need to note the IP address. It’s also handy to check what the DHCP server, this (in the above scenario) should be your router IP.

Now you have the server IP trying opening a command prompt on your client and ping the server (type ping 192.168.1.254 – replace this IP address with the one you have just found)

If you can’t ping the server, then we will need more information about your network. One thing to double check is that you have run all the security wizards and welcoming wizards after installing and logging into Windows Server 2K3, I believe the server ships hardened until you run the first windows update (after which it opens up the network / firewall)

  11. Yeah ideally 0, as even 1 bad sector in the wrong place can render the drive unreadable.

I recommend getting a copy of Hiren's or the Ultimate Boot CD and running a utility called HDAT2. Choose the mode that scans AND repairs sectors and let it run till it's done. It may take a a few hours or more, so just do it overnight or something.

It's revived two coworkers' laptops so far.

I had a copy of the UBCD, but I couldn't find a single scanner that would scan SATA, I settled on HDD Regenerator which seems to be doing the job, I couldn't boot Windows before, however since detecting those 3000 odd bad sectors Windows is once again working.

Would your advise be backup and replace the disk? Sadly its less than a year old, I'm normally a Maxtor man however this WD was cheap and had a 16MB Cache, do WD have a good name in the HDD market?
