  1. BOOYAH!! I also have 3 of the 036H's, but...like the 4 MK3's, the 2 MK4's (and 2 other MK4's), and the plethora of other stuff I order from hakshop, I dutifully ordered 2 of the 036NHA's...because !@#$!$ SWEET!!! And I love supporting my brothers and sisters at Hak5!!

Seriously awesome news on the 2.2.0 release, congrats and thanks to Darren, Seb, Robin, MrP, and all the awesome beta testers who are participating! This is really coming together nicely, this is a huge jump forward and can't wait to get the 036NHA's all loveydovey with my MK4s!! :)

I've been out of the loop lately, busy with some shitty BPOS to Office 365 migration (a classic MS clusterfuck of epic stupidity), staffing issues, and working a lot in the studio lately tracking leads and licks for some friends, but things are lightening up and I should have some quality hackage time to myself again, so perfect timing on this release! :)

Missed you all..it'll be good to be back for some quality time amongst friends!

    Now...to catch up! :)

  2. I am wondering if anyone has used any digital recorders. Like the ones made by zoom. I play guitar and need to record things I create when I fool around with things. When I make something up I want to play it back to see if it has any substance. Maybe build on it from there. I can't bring the Ubuntu Studio box everywhere. Let me know what you might have done.

I've been playing professionally for 3 decades, and highly recommend the Tascam GT-R1.

    Tascam GT-R1

I use this l'il guy when I'm sitting in the living room and don't feel like going into the studio. More like a full-featured "note taker" for when I'm inspired and write a lick, or a song, or a melody, and just want to throw it down so I don't forget it.

It's an incredible little piece of gear that is PACKED with features for it's size:

    - A lot of nice effects for both electric and acoustic(a little noisy, but not bad at all!)

    - A full rhythm section that you can play over, or have it record to your track

    - Overdubbing

    - Supports Bass as well (including the effects section)

    - Nice stereo "room" mics so you can just record ambient room sound, or plug in and record direct in.

    - Uses an SD card

    - Records to wav or mp3 (so you can import it directly into whatever DAW you're using if you want to)

    - USB port

    - Rechargable

    etc, etc, etc

For the money it can't be beat, and it sounds like you'd use it exactly as I do. It filled that little gap perfectly as no other device could. It's not a replacement for a studio/DAW, but as a portable device that you can capture inspiration with on the go or without having to recluse yourself to the studio, it's perfect.

Good luck brother, hope this helped!

eta: WOW!!!!! It's down to $149!!!! a STEAL!!

  3. DAMN IT!!

Man, I'm REALLY sorry to hear this. Hak5 is a brilliant show that, like for most of us viewers, is a very special show "just for us".

I was just thinking yesterday as I watched EP1111 how awesome it is that Darren and crew produce this incredibly unique show, have been doing it for ages, and it's as strong as it ever was. THAT is people doing things RIGHT. A lot of the appeal for me is that Darren, Snubsie, et al aren't confined by bullshit corporate rules, marketing fux, and other useless cling-on shitheels who milk the corporate teat by trying to "define" their target audience for maximum profit.

When Darren whips out a brew, or a drink, while educating us on this or that, it's just nonchalant and biz as usual, I too settle in to the show like we're in the same room...it gives it a feel like the show is just for me. It seems like a small thing, but it just shows the freedom this show has to do things it's OWN way, and has proven that it's successful for doing just that.

The audience defines the targeted content in Hak5...it's written by geeks, for geeks. The quaintness of the show is part of the draw for me. I L-I-K-E that it's not filtered through some marketing knob's idea of "where the show should go".

That said, I hope and pray that the show remains untouched, but I can't see how it will, and of course Discovery doesn't invest time and money without intending to turn a profit on that investment.

Profit = Change or elimination in most cases.

Darren, man, I wish nothing but the best for you, Snubsie, and the entire Hak5 crew. I've recently found this show and am VERY fond of it...it's like my geek friends showing up in my living room to take the time to educate me in a very down to earth way on specific things that are of extreme interest to me.

I hope beyond all hope that this doesn't put the brakes on Hak5, or change in any significant way, how you do your show or what you include in your show.

I feel EXTREMELY fortunate to have found Hak5, and Darren has single-handedly taught me more about linux than I'd have ever done on my own. It's been the SOLE inspiration for me to break free and dive head-first into linux...this from guy who's been in the IT trenches for 30 years.

I really hope Hak5 doesn't go away. I watch the show via Roku and it's become a regular part of my life.

Discovery, you'd BETTER NOT FUCK OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS @ HAK5!!

Darren, Snubsie, and crew...a sincere thanks for all you do, and saying a prayer that this winds up being a step UP for you all, and not a step backwards.

  4. lol I used to have a BBS I still have the original Wildcat BBS discs & box, but switched to a WWiV system because the ANSi graphics looked more awesome and it was open source. I will have to check that movie out.. thanks

btw; I even made a BBS system which uses telnet instead of dail-up using synchronet which was pretty cool imo, so they are still around.. still working on my ANSi graphic skills lol

Nice! Glad to see some other "old guys" here! :) Definitely remember the Wildcat craze! I ran a few different BBS systems and then settled on Obv/2, because it was k-wr4d 1337 ( :) ) and was the choice of the ANSI groups like iCE, etc, and I really liked the interface. I still have my old BBS backed up on floppies too! I got rather notorious because I ran a H/P/A/V distro board (hack/phreak/anarchy/virus distro for the uninitiated), but was also a regional FidoNET coordinator, ran some great door games, etc...rode both sides of the fence...nothing changed there! :) :)

Funny you mention the telnet BBS system, because I am considering bringing my old Obv/2 board back to life just for kicks!! There's a product called NetSerial that does the telnet to com translations that I've been working on getting functional (also NetFossil apparently does this too). My problem is that I have to run the Obv/2 system in DosBOX to get it to function, and it's become rather cludgy to get it all working smoothly. I'll get it, just not enough time in a day anymore! :)

Great to meet some other oldskewl SysOPs out here in our little corner of the world, take care and good luck!!

  5. Guys i've solved my problem!!!! :) I'm so happy! :D Here's what you can do if you're experiencing my same problems and if you, like me, live outside the US and it's difficult to return the pineapple for an exchange..However, investigating the problem i supposed that IPX RP-SMA cable was messed up (but i don't know how) and so i've decide to buy a new one like this http://www.ebay.it/itm/Cavo-Cavetto-Adattatore-Pigtail-UFL-U-FL-IPX-RP-SMA-Antenna-WiFi-Router-Wireless-/220948509258?pt=Cavi_Prolunghe_Convertitori&hash=item33718eb24a#ht_2307wt_1163. I've opened the pineapple , carefully removed the glue and then the pigtail cable itself..It's simple to remove and insert , is interlocking. I'm a hardware newbie so you can do this operation too..Now the wifi range of Pineapple just doubled, it seems to work flawlessy..:)I hope with this post to help people that are in my same situation..

    Nice!

Also, at that link I notice that Italian mailpersons seem to be much hotter than their US counterparts. I'd order one of these every day if she showed up to deliver my "pig tail"...but I digress...congrats on fixing your issue! ;)

  6. Jason Scott's BBS Documentary is a must see.

This is what I came in here to post.

Especially if you're an old Sysop like me, you will absolutely LOVE the BBS Documentary if you haven't yet seen it! It's an 8 part series (iirc), and I smiled through the entire thing.

Even if you're not old enough to remember BBS's or have been a part of it all, it's still going to be fascinating for you to watch.

  7. Yes, it can be done cheaper, but there is more risk involved. Unless I'm mistaken, both Darren and Seb have fried either boards or the adapters while developing. Just need to be careful is all. I had the spare cash, felt like paying the extra.

Luckily enough mine was gifted to me so I didn't have to pay the $30.

I have done 3 of these now with that USB-to-UART rig for $3.99 and they all went flawlessly.

Just wanted to share my experience with others who may be thinking the only way to do it is to spend $30+ on something that could be had much cheaper and is IMHO a tighter solution (provides power to the Hornet and doesn't require additional hardware to make it work)

Agreed, with the MK4, flashing can definitely be risky if you're not being careful and taking your time to do it right. Just be sure you get your jumpers on the right pins.

Otherwise, comms is comms is comms. ;)

  8. Ok, yes of course that works.

What I thought you said, and what I was trying to make clear, is that you cannot USB-to-Serial > Hornet.

I thought you were saying that was your setup, which will not work.

Ahhhh...I couldn't BELIEVE you were telling me it couldn't work!! :) ;)

    Right...UART is required.

The whole point of my original post was that the Alfa board is WAAAY over priced for what it does, and unless you have a 9pin serial on your PC, you still have to go buy a USB-to-9pin Serial cable, and in my case, I also had to buy a F/F gender changer.

That costs over $40 to setup that rig.

Teh link I posted is USB-to-UART (yes, I said "serial" in my first post, which may have been the source of all the confusion, my fault!) and is only $3.99 shipped.

So, $3.99, or $40+ to do the same job?

I was just pointing out to those in this thread that it could be done for a LOT cheaper than the Alfa route, but confirming that it does indeed work...just really expensive and not worth the extra cost IMHO.

eta: I was just pokin' fun on the "how much do you get for each Alfa board". Guess I should have put a "winkie face" there...no slight intended, just having some fun :)

  9. I think there is some confusion here.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Your setup is: PC > TrendNet Cable > Gender Changer > Alfa Board?

    Correct.

Hell, the thing is still coiled up just as I left it after using it in my bag.

eta: Using Windows 7 on the PC

  10. It will not work. If you get a USB to Serial cable, it will not work. I would like to chat with you if you did get this to work because they are two different technologies.

If you have what you linked, that is USB to UART.

    ahahhaha!!

I've just told you that it DOES work, because I've DONE IT. Are you calling me a liar?

    - TrendNet USB to Serial Cable - TU-S9

    - Alfa UART board (the $30 one)

    - Gender Changer (fem/fem) - Serial Gender Changer F/F

Connect the TrendNet cable - drivers pick up

Connect Alfa Board via gender changer to TrendNet Serial Cable - drivers pick up

Flash your MK4. (I use PuTTY)

This is the exact method and equipment I used to flash my first Hornet-UB board.

How about we make a wager, and I'll record the event with a camera?

eta: added links to the exact products I purchased from Amazon

eta2: yes, USB to UART...that's what I linked to...I ordered it while awaiting my Alfa serial board to arrive

  11. The alfa are NOT normal Serial, it is UART. So a USB to Serial cable with adapters WILL NOT WORK!

You will only get garbage data in your terminal, I tried that first before buying the Alfa Console board (I currently work in Audio/Visual and deal with control systems, RS232, and so on every day). Yes there are cheaper console boards for UART out there. I bought one that is made by Alfa so I was 100% it would work.

What you linked is a piece of hardware itself. It is a USB to UART. Also have to keep in mind that UART has a 3v and 5v. So you must make sure you know which one to use.

    ROFL!!

Well, I can tell you that it *DOES* work just fine, because I've done it.

The Alfa board, with a USB-to-Serial cable, and a gender changer works just fine...if you think spending over $40 to do the same thing that the $3.99 solution does is ok. I do not think it's ok.

What I linked to is indeed a piece of hardware...for a fraction of the cost of the Alfa board...which performs exactly the same function with regard to flashing.

I know this because I've USED BOTH SOLUTIONS on the MK4.

The USB to UART I linked to does both 3.3 and 5, you simply connect the power lead to either the 3.3 or the 5.

How much are you getting for each Alfa board they sell? ;)

  12. There is absolutely no way I'd pay $30 (or even $3) for that Alfa board. I own one. Sure, it works....if you also purchase a usb-to-9pin serial cable...and a gender changer.

I posted a link in an earlier thread to a serial board that cost $3.99, shipped, and it works far better than the Alfa one, as it works stand alone (no additional hardware required) AND it powers the board as well, so you don't need to provide additional power the board when flashing.

    USB to Serial board

I liked this one so much that I purchased a 2nd one just to have around as a spare.

    eta: price correction.

  13. Wow!! Awesome!! yeah, with the 3G dongle this will be crucial for those of us who are buying "top up cards", thanks a bunch Whistle Master, another fine module addition!!

  14. Oh yes it does :)

Mine keeps mounting as /dev/sda1 (I have a single Ext4 partition on the micro-sd). Just edit /etc/fstab and change the /usb mount to /dev/sda1 and it will mount to /usb

If you don't want to restart just issue "mount -a" after you make sure /usb is not mounted to a USB stick.

Working on USB Alfa AWUS036NH support now, so we can have the ability to have multiple wireless connections....

Brilliant, eternal thanks, that's a HUGE leap in the right direction!! I can't wait to try this out!!

And getting that alfa support in there would incredible and exactly where I'd love to see this go!! Being able to use the 036 for deauths leaving the MK4 free to Karma the aftermath would be absolutely incredible, thanks again for the inspired work!!

  15. Great catch, thanks! This is indeed the device I bought for this purpose and haven't had opportunity to figure out why things wouldn't work!!

Any idea if these fixes will now allow us to use the MC760 Virgin device as a 3G dongle, AND mount the microsd to be used as storage?

That would be 100% pure, uncut win if possible.

  16. The polish on this product is really starting to shine brightly!!!

This release is working fantastic! It's all coming together...the updates method, the modules addition, it's just brilliant.

Thanks for all your hard work seb, as usual, another giant step for mankind! :)

  17. That DEFINITELY helps...playing about with it, I see that Karma is still showing enabled in the GUI, but the karma'd AP has disappeared from my devices and they've reconnected to the onsite secured AP.

Thanks for the assist Telot, I sure appreciate the hell outta you guys :) This community is amazing.

And since those devices had reconnected to the secured AP, and Site Survey is working fine, I took the opportunity to swing a pimp hand at those connected devices via SS, and it worked perfectly!!! muaaahahah!!

I know I'm a bit behind the curve because i waited until the 1.1.0 modules-enabled firmware was released to play with these amazing modules, but I'll catch up shortly, I promise :)

Now I need to get caught up on neinsager...gotta get an interface to do the deauthing so we can have Karma up and waiting to serve the deauthed clients! :)

Thanks again WW, and to all...this is amazing.

  18. Did you turn off and on again wlan0 to see other APs and deauth them? This WILL kick off any victims you might currently be serving. If you then turn off/on mon.wlan0 you can see individual clients connected to APs as well, but karma will no longer work, requiring a reboot to reestablish functionality. Hope this helps!

    telot

  19. Click Auto. Then refresh APs.

Dude, what the HELL man, are you a wizard? ;) Nailed it, as usual.

I noted that both "monitor interface" and "wlan interface" were set to "enabled" and green. Tried disabling, reenabling, etc.

never clicked on "auto". I also noted that it was green both before and after clicking, nothing changed to those menu items, but it clearly got it all going!

Thanks again for the quick and precise help guys, your depth of knowledge never ceases to amaze. :)

  20. v1.3.3 is out! I corrected the bug with deauth clients.

    Heya WW!

Been waiting until modules was supported to check out some of your incredible additions, and today's the day! :)

I updated my MK4 to 1.1.0 successfully, fired up the GUI in FireFox

Went to the "modules" menu item

Showed available modules and choose to install Site Survey 1.3.3

    Launch Site Survey

all I show is what appears to be the column header bar.

I try refreshing both APs and clients, no data ever shows up.

I"m currently connected to an AP on the machine I'm controlling the MK4 with, as well as another 6 or so APs available to all my devices, devices can connect to my MK4 and get to internet (which is going through a WiFi AP), etc.

Any ideas? I've tried rebooting the device, turning on Karma, turning off Karma, etc, to no avail.

    Thanks

  21. well, here's some good news: suddenly my New Trent 11K mAh is powering the MK4 along with the cruzer fit plugged in!!

not sure what changed, but it's solid and working perfectly. I just decided to give it another shot out of sheer frustration, ensured it was fully charged....lo and behold, it works!!

So, if you already have one of these behemoths, you should be able to use it with the MK4 and a cruzer fit in the USB port with no issues.

Now I have all this other gear on the way (another battery and that dual cable), so I'll weigh in on those too tomorrow evening when they arrive.

For reference, my haktop is an Acer TimelineX. It would appear that the power supplied to the various USB ports on this system are not sufficient to power the MK4 *and* a USB device plugged into the MK4. All my testing on this platform was done with the haktop plugged into power.

  22. It will give you 5v at about 2.6a.

Hopefully that's enough to keep the MK4 with the cruzer fit plugged into it happy and functioning.

It seems that there's JUUUUUUST enough of a deficiency in available power to do the job via single USB port when using the cruzer fit, as I can use an old "long" Patriot 8GB stick just fine when powering the MK4 via USB, but not the cruzer fit. Telot indicated that he's got it working with another branded USB "stick" as well that's of the small form factor, but they're far more expensive than a standard USB stick.

Fingers crossed, hoping it works as intended, or I'll just have more damn portable power than I know what to do with (have a fwe other portable batteries including the New Trent 11K mAh one).

  23. Are you certain it will provide 10v of output? I'm pretty sure those dual usb to single usb Y cables only increase the current, not the voltage. I don't mean to burst your bubble hfam, but I asked about this a while back: http://forums.hak5.org/index.php?showtopic=25049&st=0&p=192653

If this isn't the case, can you please share a link? I'd love to know how they do it! Basically to double the voltage from a battery source, you have to cross the positive and the negative (sounds weird, I know) - which works fine with two independent batteries, but when its coming from the same source (1 battery, 2 usb ports that are both connected to the one battery) it will just short circuit...which is bad. I just don't want you to fry your new battery pack

    telot

I suspect you're probably correct. I'm going off the description of the product at the link above for the 2-into-1 cable, give it a look.

Perhaps it's still 5V but providing more amps is what's happening.

I'll give it all a try and let ya know how it works out, guess it shipped last night, should have it here by Thursday.

I think that with this particular battery the dual cable may not be necessary given that one of the USB outputs has 5v/2A...just not sure anymore, but I've got to come up with something portable and rechargeable that works with the cruzer fit, because right now in order to make things work I've got to use that 12V wall wart and there's nothing discrete or handy about that. :)

Thanks for the input Telot, I'll let ya know how it goes. I'll try the dual cable I have on the way by plugging it all into my haktop and seeing if it can power the MK4 with a fit plugged in.

I should have some results for all of it here Thursday evening, wish me luck! ;)

  24. petertfm: Correct. I believe it will have more than enough juice to do the trick (at least that's what I'm hoping!).

NotTheFed: I saw that one there too, but I noted the actual seller name and spooked...."The Closeout Masters" just doesn't sound like a good place to buy an expensive battery, but it's probably just fine. :)

The battery I bought is here:

8400 mAh Dual USB Output, and it was only $55.

This is the cable I bought as I already have a USB to Type M:

Dual Male USB to Single Female USB cable - $2.99/ea

Update: I went back and actually read some of the reviews on this battery, and it appears that the 2 ports are of different amperages. Port 1 is 0.6A, Port 2 is 2A.

This means that the dual USB cable is unnecessary on this battery pack to run periphs on the MK4! Woooot!!!
