  1. I guess Murphy is spending the week at my house.

You will never need a floppy again until you throw out every last floppy in your house.

So much for installing DSL on my laptop. The laptop has a cd rom drive but it's so old and crappy after reading a few bytes off of the boot sector, it decides to spin down, and spin up, and spin down, and spin up........

Also Booting to usb has been a treat. After installing the USB iso for the 12th time and every time the install finds a different spot to stop and say that the kernel is corrupted i gave up on that dream. Now I'm where this post started, trying to use a floppy, only to find that i threw out every floppy in my house not more that a few weeks ago.

  2. Most on/off switches aren't just that.

They usually have 3 prongs; a ground , a Common Open, and a common Closed.

So when the switch is in the up position it closes the circuit to the top prong and current may flow, the same goes when the switch is in the down position.

    .............Open^.....^ground..^Closed

And as Sparda posted, this would be wired the same way as a normal house 3way or 4way light setup.

  3. ... very bad for the drives. A condition known as "the wobbles"... shortening the lifespan of those drives ...

Thanks for the info, I haven't herd of that before. Another option, apart from banding, is using rubber risers. I recommend black carbon bases rubber because it is much denser and it should prevent the condition that you speak of, but also decrease noise. I used this method instead of banding in my computer due to space constraints.

  4. I thought it was 1 June 09 ?

"The Beta will stop working on August 1, 2009"

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7...structions.aspx

    EDIT:

After reviewing the windows 7 user Q&A page (BTW don't go there, It's like wading through a pool of sewage) It seems that windows seven will abruptly stop working on that date, and you will not be able to recover your data without using another operating system or a live CD of some sort.

  5. I was wondering if there is a service that can convert apple iPod podcasts into rss feeds or if there is a way to extract the video feeds from a podcast link. I know that i could use iTunes to download the videos then have the ZUNE player copy and convert them but I really do not want to have to install a giant slow application just to download one or two podcasts.

  6. I think what your looking for is Compiz. This can be retrieved from the program manager in Ubuntu. Once you download and install it, go to Main Menu -> System Tools -> Compiz Icon or press ALT + F2. one of the options in Compiz should be transparent windows.

  7. so far windows 7 has been very stable on my laptop. But I have gotten the beep of death. First Google chrome froze, then all of windows became non responsive for a few seconds, then a crazy loud beep. The screen did a quick redraw, then every thing was back to normal.

  8. suspending your components in the case with heavy duty rubber bands is a good way to cut down on noise and vibration.

a pic if you haven't seen this done before.

Great technique for building silent computers.

  9. I bought a cheep track1&2 reader that connects with the ps2 port.

Planning on doing a little house security with it.

First is unlocking the front door using the reader.

Secondly, our fraternity house has been a target of theft during parties. Were thinking about requiring school ID's to swiped at the door (for private events we usually already require them). When the card is swiped a photo is taken along with a time stamp. This coupled with a new cctv were installing should really help us out finding who is stealing from us. (Or deter theft all together)

Also all of the data would be encrypted and destroyed the next day for security reasons.

  10. I'm enjoying windows7 quite a bit. I've had it installed for almost a week now. All of the vista drivers work fine on windows 7 for my laptop, and all of the programs that I had running on vista work fine on seven! Not much has changed from vista. The new start bar thing is nice, and some other small visual tweaks but other than that and the increases in performance it's about the same.

So my recommendation is if you have vista already installed and working 100% you should be mostly safe trying out 7. People coming from XP may face more problems.

    A few notes,

Remember how they changed the networking panel from XP to Vista, well they did it again from Vista to 7. (Makes me want to punch babies) Also the only glitch that is annoying me is after a restart 7 wont connect to my home workgroup until I Change a open the network settings panel and change any setting and hit apply, So I just put my laptop into suspend instead.

the error fixed it's self after an update.

I'm planning on using it as my now primary OS.

  11. This would require some time(after hours access) + not being afraid of 120 AC power, but $10 says that you could fit it inside of this,

    4plug.jpg

If you removed the case and gutted the 120 power supply it should fit nicley + it would be powered.

if they use normal plastic boxes there is a bunch of extra space in the back of the boxes, But if the building is wired using conduit the boxes are much tighter.

  12. Just a heads up, If you get the police involved they can contact AIM and request information about the account.

Back in High school some kid said that he received a bomb threat over AIM. He printed off a log of the conservation and gave it to the school authorities. They passed it on the police then Contacted AIM. Turns out that both accounts were created from the same computer. The kid was expelled and was no longer able to attend any school in the district ever again.

Another thought, Read the AIM Terms Of Service, I'm fairly cretin what the person is doing is in violation of this. You might be able to go somewhere from that.

  13. I played the teen version when I as younger and it was allot of fun building and scripting things. Once I was old enough i was sent to the big world of the full version and thats when I stopped playing it.

Had a friend who made in game clothing, made some serious cash.

  14. I have mixed thoughts on Vista. It does have some nice new features that can really help the beginning to average computer user, but i feel that some of these additions can get in the way of power users (networking center). It does have a nicer interface, and a more secure computing environment (but still not impenetrable, recommend firewall/anti virus). Also with all of the new eye candy and new effects it does take a toll on your system. 1GB of ram is absolute minimum to run the system and i strongly recommend 2GB for a more enjoyable experience.

After all of that my recommendation that I have been giving people has been, If your new computer comes with vista keep it, but I don't suggest updating an older system to Vista.
