  1. The E6400 is a very nice machine but its not the same as a MPB. Removeable battery, docking station and the fact that the entire base of the unit can be removed for upgrades is a plus. However, its not as well made, lots of plastic and with the top end processor it smells of burning for the 1st few weeks of operation. No, not a dodgey unit, all 30 of them were the same.

the removable bottom cover i do like alot, thats one thing i like about vaios, theyre super fuckin easy to work on and access internal components. i do wish dell and hp would adopt this type of design.

  2. Your still missing the point, people who buy the Air want it for its size and its weight, not its uber-performance. This is why it is better if that is what you want, clearly the Air is not aimed at you because you can't understand this. None of the apples are weaker machines, by your argument all smart phones are rubbish because for the same price you can buy a netbook, they are very different markets, like the Air is supposed to be an ultra portable style, the Dell is a small notebook.

If you want to compare that dell to an Apple compare it to the MacBook, you'll find the difference in price more favorable there will be little difference between them.

its not that im missing the point. i understand your point of view. and comparing cellphones to netbooks dosnt really describe my point of view. lets take blackberries for example. tons of people buy blackberry cell phones that are priced much higher than devices that can do twice as much, have faster processors, better camera touch screen interface, and 3g capability.

comparing laptops in the same size and spec catagory is not the same as comparing a cell phone to a netbook. also its not just the macbook air its many of apples products, people practially trip over themselves to get a new ipod that costs much more than a devices that can outperform it, and for less money.

compare any machine that apple has against a simmilar spec machine from another company and its obvious that mac buyers are getting gouged. i just compared an xps m1530 to a macbook pro 15" and the difference in price---mac $3,425.00 Dell xps $2,239 with blueray and and it even comes with a dell mini 9 netbook for that price too. now thats hot

  3. Well the fact that your Air spec has a SSD and the Dell spec doesn't, makes the price very different.

Over in the UK, the Dell Studio XPS 13 costs about £800 where the Air costs around £1200.

The dell weighs 2.2Kg where the Air weighs 1.36Kg.

    The dells dimensions are Width: 12.56" (319mm), Height: 0.88" (22.55mm) front / 1.35" (34.34mm) back, Depth: 9.3" (236.12mm)

Where the Airs dimensions are Height: 0.4-1.94 cm (0.16-0.76 inch) Width: 32.5 cm (12.74 inches) Depth: 22.7 cm (8.9 inches)

So for your extra money, you get laptop which weighs nearly 1Kg less and is nearly less than half the physical size.

the dell i compared was only .79 lbs heavier than the mac book air, it also had the option for a 256gig ssd for 400 dollars more or a 128gig ssd for 200 more. if i wanted i could have added more leetspecs to the dell but even these specs crushed the macbook so there was no need.

basically everyone knows that when you buy a mac you pay more and you get less, and osx is no excuse either, everyone complains about microsoft and the price of windows, but i cant see paying 500-2000 dollars more for a weaker machine just because it looks cool and runs osx. why anyone would is beyond me.

  4. You could not be more wrong about who builds the laptop components. Apple designs and builds the laptop motherboard and for the same reason why with desktop motherboards that the prices vary greatly is that you can have the chance to use poor electrical components or good ones.

The cases are designed and manufactured by apple, all the unibody macbooks are made out of aluminum, where as the majority of PC laptops are still made out of plastic, also because of the unique design Apple has the ability to offer better strength and a more solid feel to the laptops.

If you can buy a better spec laptop than the Macbook Air for only 9oz more, then your missing the point. You can't, part of the Air's specification is its weight, which you've just said you can't build. You don't need a power house in your bag all the time, not having a broken back is more important to some people.

ok i hear what youre saying but lets just compare whats available and for how much real quick. Apple vs. Dell round 1

  5. ok.. why is this thread already locked for puffed marshmallow stupidity?

Look we know why OSX runs so good. Because if you made linux or windows or any other O.S. to run on 3 types of hardware instead of 100000 different types and you controlled all the driver specs, then yes, linux or windows would be 1000000x better than it is now...

The other thing.... You can buy a bmw for $65,000 when you can buy a shelby gt500 for $55,000 and blow the everloving snot out of the bmw.. Then again you could buy a 95' chevy cavalier, throw a 3500 supercharged v6 in it, bore and stroke, etc, and blow both of them away for around $25,000.. (though the chevy still wont give street cred).. i kno.. still waiting for mine!!! (no mine is stock tho..)

And the last thing, the macs use intel opterons... Server chips made for reliability and stability. Though not always known for speed. This is the other reason why most hackintoshes best the pants (or at least I have heard) of the speed of a mac... though still not that stable.

But here's the thing. You want to compaire computers, someone get the specs/speed/etc of a high end alienware computer and put THAT against a mac and see what happens...

    AMD= opteron

    intel=xeon :P

  6. i hear this argument alot, people suggesting that one company is better quality than another. a lot of people claim that lenovo/ibm thinkpads are made with far superior parts compared to dell, hp, or gateway for example, and this is what justifies the 30-50% higher price compared to another laptop from a different company with similar or even better specs. bottom line is when you open up any of these laptops desktops or whatever other device it may be its all the same shit. you'll find motherboards by intel, asus, or gigabyte. you might also find a processor by either intel or amd, hard drive by maxtor, seagate, or western digital. maybe a gpu by nvidia, ati/amd, or integrated. they all buy their cases from 3rd party. even apple. so for me to believe that a mac is better quality than a dell or hp with almost identical internal components from all the same manufacturers is crazy. the maxtor hard drive does not last longer simply because its wrapped in a cool looking case with fruit on the lid. i cant justify ever spending 2500 dollars on a macbook air when i could easily go to dell or hp and get a leet spec laptop that would crush the Mac Air and weighs only 9oz more. and who cares if they have a better warranty (i dont know if they do or not) when you could buy two laptops for the price of one mac and just use the extra in case something ever breaks on your main lappy.

they may look nice but not worth the price. but to each his own. if someone wants to run around drinking designer coffee venti mocha lattes, while they rock their ipods, iphone, and macbooks while they chill at the local hooka lounge or jazz club, thats cool with me.

  7. but hey man isnt it worth the extra 1000 dollars to be trendy and cool. one day i will wake up in the morning to the sound of my iClock, brush my teeth with my iBrush, throw on some Mac Apparel, grab my iPhone, iPod, and Mac Book, then jump in my iCar, head out to work at Apple, then head back to my iHome where i'll watch my Apple tv on my Mac display while my iWife cooks Apples and Macs (mmmm my favorite) then unwind in the iTub, hit the iSack then do it all again the next day. yay im trendy and cool too look i have white headphones and 10000000000000000000000 songs that i'll never be able to finish listening to, and i did it all for double the price.

  8. If its ARP cache poisoning, then yes.

Its not physical layer dependent, with wireless though, if you have a card that will catch all the packets and you know the encryption key (if there is one) then you can just read the packets without needing to do any poisoning.

    any wireless card will work.

  9. Backtrack is NOT a day-to-day OS, meant only for security testing, it doesn't have a package manager of any sort, etc. Personally I recommend arch because it's very lightweight and you're not going to have a very powerful processor. 3G + GPS built in along with the 1600x768 resolution screen makes it an amazing netbook if you can afford it though.

Personally I'll be getting an Acer Aspire One soon for $300 because I'm a broke teenager.

the acer aspire one is probably the best bang for your buck as far as netbooks go. personally i love my hp mini note, of course i have the best spec version, it runs a little expensive i think theyre still around 800 bucks or so but im still having a hard time finding a netbook with better specs.

  10. yeah i do that sometimes lol, well i threw my eepc when the power went, probably not the best way to treat it :\

im sure i cant do nothing with it now, seen as flashing a phones firmware or bios,, power suply is crutial.. :'(

im also sure im answering my own question here and i feel like a d**k lolz,

the hope remains that a 'magic app' will be posted to fix it

    if not it will be....

oh thats not so bad chuck. how about slamming a 900 dollar mini note thats only 4 days old.

i get pissed sometimes too. i also slammed an 1800 dollar xps m1330 but ill look and see if i have pics of that one somewhere.

  11. Vector, WTF do you have?!~

Wait, are you one of those people who live right next to a large co. w/a trunk that get's bandwidth 4 free, but your not guaranteed any bandwidth? *heard through a friend of a friend 1 time*

i have a peplink multiwan router with a few wireless routers in client mode "borrowing" internets from a few of my generous (and unknowing) neighbors.

  12. i think a nice smart phone/ppc would be a much better solution. i mean if youre gonna spend hundreds of dollars on a device to display text then might as well give it wifi capability, gps functionality, let it run applications for troubleshooting network issues or anyalyzing wireless network connection issues, also support any type of ms office document, pdf, or .txt. hell why not even give it mobile internet capability just incase you need to check or send an email, or ask the all knowing google a question that you dont have time to look through 1500 ebooks for answer. and i suppose it would be nice to be able to make some video calls or watch tv while on a lunch break. but maybe im missing something.

  13. Do you know of a UK based supplier?

the ubiquiti site has listings of all their resellers, you can filter them by continent. see if any of their euro locations work for you.
