  1. hell I thought about it like this too.. It does not have to be windows. Use linux.

    Here's my idea on it.

Laptop such as the aspire one.

    Only ONE usb port.

Integrated linux solution on chip (like asus does) with only open office, printer support, PDF viewer, micro sd support, stylus support, and a photo editing program (for art class er to make their own background).

512mb of ram should be more than enough to view one or two pdfs at once and it doesnt have to be fast ram either.

2 MicrosSD slots built in for storage.(tucked away under a cover on the bottom with nintendo style screws)

2gigs should be sufficient for all books in pdf, and for low resolution videos to suppliment. And a second one @ 512mb will be more than enough for any papers to do in high school.

Hardwired stylus for highlighting and making notes in the pdf files.

Battery capable of 6 hours of uptime w/o charge. (no hard drives will use way less power)

I say done to the maximum extent. This type of setup (when mainstreamed across all schools) should cost no more than $200 per laptop if that. Have the parent sign a form stating that the system is at the cost of the parent for any apparent damages, but that the school will pay if it is any hardware failure damages not linked to the child.

The child could carry the same laptop from 7th grade to 12th grade. The cost would minimalize TONS of funds used on books and etc.

Since it would be an instant on solution, they could use it anywhere and have it fast. Make the teacher get up and check the work, hell we are paying them for something anyway.

    I'd say were done here.

oh crap.. sorry about the doublepost.

well hexscrew youre smarter than the average cat it seems. i mean theres things you can do with laptops that you just cant do with a textbook. most people are visual learners and you can fit much much more content on your history class cd/dvd than any history book could ever hold, in addition to that you can have interactive media to go along with the reading so it could show animations of how the bombing of peal horbor went down for example. teachers could put together power point presos that kids could follow along with etc etc the possibilities are almost endless, this could also help in southern states with childeren that dont speak english that well because you could have the content in different languages for example, this would help because the teachers wont have to slow down and help non english speaking students as much and take attention away from the english speaking kids. i mean the rest of these people are just failing to think outside the box, and thats not the hacker mindset if you ask me. i am and always will be in support of technological advancement wether it be in the school in the workplace at home or anywhere, call it what yuo want but its my technolust. AND I TRUST IT

  2. jesus i see so many fail posts here its not even funny. first of all no one said that these kids were going to have internet access in class, no one even said that these computers would be capable of accessing the internet period so all the fail talk about admin this and admin that is stupid. second of all i see someone talking about tax money for laptops. when was the last time you checked the price of 6+ textbooks for 3 years for a middle school kid? think its more than 300 bucks??? probably and kids tear the shit out of textbooks write in them destroy so they arent any better than toting around a netbook, also kids tend to not carry the books they need because it fucking sucks carrying around 50 lbs of books in a fucking backpack all day long. a laptop with a small case of textbook cd's or all the textbooks on the harddrive makes more sense. in case some of you didnt notice alot of schools dont have lockers. this is a great step forward because wether you want to belive it or not our kids kids wont be using books in the future. they just wont, of course as someone said "they dont need laptops to learn" thats obvious but who says that laptops are not effective learning tools. ive learned so many things using a computer, far more than ive ever learned from any book i read. think about that for a second. libraries, textbooks, hell most books will be replaced eventually by ebooks and digital content. it just will happen. so again i think this is a great thing for 7th graders i think its a great beta test and i fully support kids learning tech and being exposed to it early on. either master technology or be mastered by it.

  3. theres nothing wrong with letting a kid have his own computer at any age. just like any other toy. which for me thats mostly what computers are, theyre toys. sure they have practical uses, but for the most part my computers are toys, entertainment devices, communication devices etc. so when someone says its not a good idea to give a 3 year old a computer of his own without backing it up is just ignorance. my son will be the only kid in 2nd grade that can build his own gaming rig. technology is the future and when my son is in 7th grade you can bet your ass they will use electronic devices exclusively instead of textbooks, as you can see by the topic of this thread its already starting. i plan to give my son the best head start he can have. so until any of you who say its not a good idea actually have a child of your own and see their interest in computers because they see you working on them and using them, then you have no room to talk or comment about.

  4. yeah like VaKo said if you just want to limit a certain computers access to the web or limit which apps/ports they can use over the internet most newer router firmwares can easily handle that. you could always use the parental controls settings in windows to limit a certain user on a computer but not limit the actual computer itself.

  5. i have been trying to learn wireshark and how to use it.

so what i did is i set up wireshark to capture packets while i went on facebook and chatted with my friends.

    my question is

is there a way to display a facebook chat (instant message) in a list form?

    for example

    sent: hi

    received: hey whats going on

    sent: not much

if not is there another tool that will help me analyze the packets in this manner

    sincerely

    napisani

    note*

this capturing session was done strictly for learning purposes only. nothing malicious!

if youre on windows i would recommend netresident or commview/commview for wifi. i use netresident almost daily, and it will do exactly what you're wanting to do, reconstruct data packets on the fly in real time so you can view webmails on 80, chat sessions jabber/icq/aim/yahoo/irc etc, ftp sessions, http/80/8080/443, msn 1863, mail 25/110/143, and the list goes on. even decode and playback voip sessions. commview will allow you to do most of the same but dosnt have the search/filtering options that netresident has. you can customize search sets and have it alert you when its captured your specific search targets, for example secure.myspace.login, if you want to cap someones myspace login and have it alert you.

heres a screenshot of yahoo chat session reconstruction

  6. In the US ATT's unlimited 3G data really means 5gb, anything after that is crazy expensive.

i've had the unlimited mediamax 200 package from cingular/att 19.99usd for a few years now, and i've used it with many different phones, and i've tethered all of them to my computers either via bluetooth, usb, or wifi. at one point it was my sole internet connection for more than a year and i've never been charged extra, gotten a warning, or had any problems so far with cingular/att. i never tell them what type of phone i have or that i'll be tethering my connection, and i've never been charged more than 19.99 for data.

  7. I have a motorola dct 6416 with alot of recorded content that the only way I found to copy to my pc is via firewire and even then it won't copy the encrypted content. Was wondering if anyone knew of a device or video card that I could get that would allow me to record or capture my content to my pc whether it be encrypted or not.

Hope this all makes sense I know it's sunday, but I got a toothache and vadka seems to be the only working remedy at this time ;)

im assuming youre recording via firewire in windows. are you using xp or vista and which version of xp or vista are you using? do yo uhave media center installed? what app are you using to record from the firewire ports? i rip alot of content off my scientific atlantic boxes via firewire. the models are 3250HD and 8300HD. i use CapDVHS to rip the content from the box in .ts format then i use HDTVtoMPEG2 converter to convert the transport stream into mpeg2 format.

when yo usay it wont let you copy encrypted content are you talking about transferring a recorded program from the STB to your computer or are you talking about recording a live show from the STB to your computer via firewire, or both? i know some channels and or programs are transmitted in a specific encrypted format.

  8. this is something us windows mobile users have been able to do for a long time. with my htc touch hd and htc touch diamond (both unlocked models) i can share whichever internet connection i have either wifi or hsdpa/hsupa, to any connection interface my phone has, usb, bluetooth, wifi, etc. its nice that you can do these things with the iphone but its just a shame that apple has them so locked down. but hey thats apple, the biggest little would-be monopoly there is.

  9. Is there really such a need to access Hak5 at a sandwich shop, so many places offer wifi now so you can probably move to the shop next door. (I know starbucks don't block it).

well thats not any fun now is it. you wouldnt learn anything that way either.

  10. nice specs on that shit. i dont really see any need for 12 gigs of ram just yet though. i mean i have two laptops with 4 gigs each and i never even use more than half at any given point. with the exception of a couple apps. but that is nice for bragging rights. i know some of the dell xps notebooks ive been looking at want 600+ dollars for the 8gig ram uprade so i dont imagine that this thing stuffed with 12 gigs of ddr3 is gonna be less than 4-5k

  11. depending on the chipset of your wireless card you dont even need to use another app to change your mac. in the wireless adapters configuration section you can set the mac address to whatever you want. its usually listed as Network address or locally administered MAC address or simmilar depending on the wireless card and chipset, i know this works on all the atheros chipsets, ralink RT73, RT25xx chipsets, broadcom chipsets, and i think ( not totally sure) realtek chipsets, it works on my realtek gigabit nic anyways.
