  1. I also took down the site until I can find out whether or not they can sue me.

If you think about it your not hacking pandora in any way. All your program does is basicly capture text from Firefox's title bar and rename files that are on your computer.

You would think that if a file is located on your computer you would have the right to do what ever you wanted to do with said file.

But i'm sure there was a EULA somewhere with very small text that when we accepted we forfeited all our rights and are liable and all that BS.

    Just my opinion....

  2. Just an update on my NSLU2 Network Storage Link.

It has been on for 8 days and I haven't had a problem with it yet. It backs up all my files at 2am every night (or morning however you think of that). I have accessed my files over the network and stream videos and mp3s with no problem. Also accessed them over the net with no problems so far. Basicly I love my NSLU2 and I hope you go grab yourself one too.

  3. MMM, very intersesting thread, I have to say that I like it a lot.

I myself had a harddrive fail, and a 120 gig maxtor, but it was like 5 years old, in and out of 4 computers, use for storage, windows os, linux os, and what not.

But I have never had any trouble with Maxtor, Western Digital, Or Segate.

But just for my personal opinion, the only two brands that I trust is Western Digital and Maxtor, never tried a Segate, something about the name bothers the hell out of me for some reason, and never tried on and never will. Hope that I am not raining on anyones parade of segate harddrives

Just somethings I noticed this morning.

you say you had a 120 gig maxtor fail, then you say you've never had any trouble with maxtor.

you say you've never had any trouble with seagate, then you say you have never tried a Seagate.

I wasn't going to say anything because I figured someone else would, but when no one else did I had to say something. Sorry

  4. TomB I like how you're going at this. I like the look of the 3tunes site. I've been wanting to tackle something like this but I just started a new job and have no time. Keep us up to date on your project. Well I guess i'll just keep checking your site.

  5. Sorry for getting off topic, but may be you can answer this as my college visual basic teacher cannot.

In VB6 if you had say a text box (text1) on form1 then you had a button on form2. To modifiy what the text box says on form1 when the button on form2 is pressed you would simple put form1.text1.text = "modified text" in the button sub. This how ever no longer how VB .NET works (i'm like wtf?! MS broke most of the standerds they made up to make a more anoying programing language). Can you perhaps give an example (if at all posible) of how to get the same effect from VB .NET?

I had a vb.net class over a year ago. Can't remember exactly what you have to do, but I think you need to add a module and have global strings that hold the values of the text boxes. Then you can use them on whatever form you are in. Hope that helps.

  6. I've looked into this a time or two, but because of lack of funds I quit. I'm starting a new job Monday and today I spent most of my time at www.mp3car.com because i'll have money now. They have forums and a store. I don't know if their stuff is expensive or not I haven't checked around to compare, but it's a good place to look around and get ideas.

I've also found this book Car PC Hacks and might pick it up. Read the customer reviews I think it's the 3rd one lists all the chapters. Sounds like it would come in handy when building a CarPc.

  7. I went out and bought this external HDD and got my NSLU2 setup without any hacked firmware yet. Just wanted to see what it was capable of doing.

It's pretty nice I have it set to do incremental backups of 3 folders on my computer and 1 folder on my dads computer every night. Plus I can access the files it stores over the internet.

  8. I hope our new t-shirt vendor comes through soon so we can do giveaways too. Stay tuned.

Where are you getting the new T-Shirts from? I've been wanting to get a Hak.5 t-shirt for sometime now, but i'm not really into the white or ringer cafepress shirts.

  9. you probably need to setup port forwarding on your router. Make port 80 go to whatever the ip address of the computer that your running as your server.

Someone will probably post with a more detailed answer.

  10. I am running ubuntu on a old pc. It's not that I don't know linux because i'm learning, it's the fact that their is so many different things I could do with the NSLU2 that I don't know where to start. I know I still want the backup functionality but the other stuff I was going to leave to Hak5.

  11. Yesterday I went to the mall and noticed that my Office Max was having a store closing sale. The store was pretty empty but I figured I could get some cheap printer ink or paper. Well there wasn't anything worth getting until I dug through a box of crazy glue and found a Linksys Network Storage Link (NSLU2). I guess someone hid it there and was going to come back and get it. It was marked as $99 but was 70% off. I figured I'd get it and put it on Ebay and get my money back plus more.

I looked online to see what the cheapest price I could find was and on froogle it was about $78. Did some more checking and this like most Linksys products is running Linux and has hacked firmware available for it, one being Unslug.

This webpage lists what some people are doing with their NSLU2s.

I think this would be a great cheap hack to have on Hak.5, plus I want to hack my NSLU2 but would need a little help from you guys since i'm new to this.

  12. You could always use a cheap usb webcam. If you take them out of their shell they are about as small as the CMOS camera modules. Plus they already come with software that probably includes motion sensing.

  13. I only just found the time to watch it. (Yeah, I suck)

I really liked it, but wasn't this one going to have a Geocaching segment? Personally, I don't see the fun in finding something based on a GPS coördinate, but maybe I'm missing something.

I asked Darren as soon as the synopsis was posted on the website about the Geocaching segment. He said it was pushed back until eps. 10. He said they had too much content and that they were already pushing an hour long.

Personally I would like to get into Geocaching, and would've loved to see it in this episode. I would've thought they would push back some other segment since they had the sneak peak for Geocaching at the end of Ep. 8. They could've put another sneak peak at the end of 9 and make it look real interesting. Oh well i'll have to wait another month to get my Geocaching fix.
