Get an EEEPC. My 1005HA works perfectly in BT4.

Nice project. :)
I wouldn't have a use for one, since I have my own.

Episode 7x12
in Hak5
Great episode (as usual).
Good selection of offline google maps tools, that's for sure. I'll probably be giving them a shot for when I head up to Oregon later this summer.
I used to use PING (Part Image is Not Ghost) before switching to Clonezilla, since PING didn't handle EXT4 partitions.
Clonezilla can do EXT2, 3 and 4 with no problems.

Was that a rhetorical question?
Yeah, it was a rhetorical question. :P Just something to think about whenever someone says "fuck microsoft" etc.
Yes unfortunately it is, even though you're not making money or a profit from it. However, they don't really notice or don't bother to blacklist the key if lets say 3 machines have been activated with the same key. If that key gets activate shit loads of times, then they know it's in the black market to black list it.There will be no shitstorm. They'll just black list the key and you'll get a message on next update that your OS is a pirate copy and to buy a genuine licence.
Good point. Haven't had that happen, outside of forgetting to activate an eval copy of Server 2008 after the 10 day "grace period." You just get nagged every time the machine boots as well as reduced functionality. That's enuff for me to just buy a copy for each machine, that way I can prove that I have a licensed copy.
It's like my Technet subscription. I wanted to setup a domain etc at home with genuine keys for testing and just to keep it running for months to play etc. To learn. Once I've finished testing I suppose to stop using the keys. But I won't. But they'll only ever be available to me, I won't give them out to anyone and because of that, MS seemingly don't bother to inforce the rule that they are suppose to only be for testing. They won't know as some companies test systems for years. If those keys got out into the wild though and were activated thousands of times, then they'd take notice and block list all my keys more than likely.I'm sure there are companies that do the same with their Technet or MSDN stuff. Then again, I've seen companies testing software on the same machines for years, so I guess it is a bit of a gray area.

Would reusing a key (multiple times on different machines) and breaking the license agreement be considered pirating?
I've bought OEM licenses for all the machines I have at home (minus a dell, which came preinstalled with XP). I'd rather pay a bit of money up front then deal with a shitstorm if it ever came to that.

I added the entries manually, since I couldn't figure out how to get the damned thing to use dynamic DNS.
I did disable recursive lookups, and added my ISP's DNS servers to the DHCP scope.
I don't know if that will make is any more secure tho.
-
I set it up as a local DNS server that isn't accessible from the internet (it's behind my router's firewall and an iptables firewall on the server itself).
I just want to make sure that it is as secure as possible, even tho I doubt it would be compromised.
Any suggestions for securing this server, or where to start?

Now that you mention it, I do seem to remember that. I wonder why that happened.

did the youtube version have th emissing audio like rev 3's or was it fixed? Maybe darren used th yt version because he fixed the episode and reuploaded it? Or, they just wanted to take the load off the rev 3 site? Rev3 even has videos on youtube, so not sur eit makes any difference where its coming from. If you notice, when you download episodes, they also come from a redirect in between, so they probably use it for tracking purposes too.
Hrm, I haven't noticed missing audio on the Rev3 version of Hak5 before.

I figured it out: had to set the "option domain-name" setting on the DHCP server to the domain that I was using for the FQDN.
Now I just need to figure out what all I need to do to secure said DNS server. That'll be fun.
-
Hrm one more question. Does anyone know how to set a "DNS suffix" so that I don't have to keep typing the damned dns domain each time?
I am guessing I need to set it up in DHCP, but I am not sure.

The latest video was using flash, idk what's going on either.

Awesome. Can you get a screenshot of it?

Schweet I have my own Intellectual Property Address!
Sounds like a stupid thing to put into law.

magnetic fail :)
they have their weaknesses
im sure a 1tb solid state drive would be more reliable
Cost to storage ratio is still insanely high for SSD. Tape is cheap.

Thanks for the info guys!

I am not sure where I read about that (if I read about it at all.. ) but if you use a TLD like a .com or .net, you need to register it, since it'll be out on the internet. If I recall correctly, if you use something like .local or even .office, it won't be going out on the internet.
I could be wrong of course.

Right now I can ping the machines just by using the hostname: e.g., "thor"
When I set up a test dns server, I needed to use the entire domain name: e.g., "thor.local"
I don't have to do that currently for the windows boxes, but I think they are just using NetBIOS broadcasts to confirm the machine name.
-
Thanks! I'll be giving it a shot later today. :)
Configuring DNS in Windows Server is a whole hell of a lot easier, but at least Webmin makes it semi-manageable.
EDIT: Is there a way to ping a host without having to use the domain name? I tried setting up an alias, but it won't allow duplicate entires.
Also: Do I need to set up the DNS server in a chroot environment? I seem to recall having read that it would be a wise.

I want to set up a DNS server that will do both forward lookup (and maybe reverse lookup, but I don't think that would be needed) for the local machines and forward any requests that are not local onto the internet.
I was trying to follow a tutorial on how to set up a caching name server and that seemed to work, but I am a bit clueless as to how to set up this DNS server to work with DHCP, so that anything assigned an IP from DHCP is added to the DNS database.
Any ideas? I am thinking I might just create A records and leave it at that.
I think I need to create a master zone for my local network and add the clients to it, but I am not 100% positive. Most of the how-tos I found did everything from the command-line, not thru webmin.
Any help would be appreciated.

Episode 7x10
in Hak5
Good episode guys.
It's a bit random, but they are still entertaining and have some decent info at the same time. :D
If I wasn't using rsync and a cronjob.. I'd probably be using Allway Sync, since it seems to be a pretty powerful program.

Wow, if 20Mbps is slow, I wonder what fast would be considered.
I think VaKo is on the right track, what type of router do you have?
I know there are some that cannot handle super high speed links.
