As for not being able to run this without admin, here is my little contribution, it allows you to login as SYSTEM, after running the script, cmd.exe will show, run explorer, and there you go I hope someone can expand on it.
Code of admin.bat :
TASKKILL /F /IM "explorer.exe" sc create testsvc binpath= "cmd /K start" type= own type= interact sc start testsvc del admin.bat

I had heard talk about it and how great it was so I dived right into redhat about 2 years ago, formatted over windows, I ended up not really like redhat for a desktop so I reinstalled windows, and did some more searching, I found out about debian, installed it and loved, it I read that if your going to learn linux, learn it from CLI before you ever use a GUI, so I only used CLI until I felt confident and started playing around with GUI's on *nix, I still prefer windows as My desktop but linux as a server and as a mythtv box. I love Gentoo and Ubuntu, I hear that ubuntu performs best on laptops though.

I would definately go with dual core. I went with that on my last build and I'm loving my AMD 3800 x2. I am more of an AMD guy then intel. also, invest in dual channel memory. SATA drivers and a nice sturdy well built case such as a lian li. I really don't need much of a video card, but I am waiting until directx10 compatible ones come out and I willl buy another ATI. but mainly I would suggest:
64 bit capable dual core processor
Dual Channel DDR2
Direct x 10 compatible video card (none our out but the x800 is a cheap card that should fit your needs)
SATA drivers (so you can set up RAID)

why did you have to end the topic name with lol?

they all have there advantages, I like gnome as a desktop, fluxbox, on live cd's and slower desktops, and of course CLI on my servers, but even when I am using a GUI on linux, I find myself using CLI to do even the simpliest tasks.
