  2. Yes there are around 3 brick wall in between, it is not possible for me to relocate the modem as I don't have any closer phone socket.
  3. @Infiltrator: I am using Netgear DG834G while I am now using: Edimax EW-7318USg – Wireless 801.11b / g Turbo Mode USB 2.0 Hi-Gain Adapter / detachable antenna that is why i cannot use it to get full reception. my intention is to be able to use my own wireless signal which is very weak that is why I am getting 2000mW antenna. Is the device that I'm going to buy the right one to increase my WLAN signal / reception ? I'm not looking into broadcasting my signal of course. hopefully with 2000mW it shouldn't affect any health hazard.

Hi All, I am having wireless network connectivity problem here at home, since I cannot move the wireless AP into anywhere closer to my room, the WLAN network (802.11g with WPA-PSK) that I connect everyday always unstable with the symptoms: 1. the maximum signal strength that I can get is 40-45% (ranging from 2 to 3 bars out of 5 in Windows 7). 2. I can connect to the WLAN before 7 PM in the eveningbut then when I turn on my PC with 5dB USB WLAN or my iPhone after midnight I cannot connect to the network eventhough the SSID is listed there, I always get password prompt. and now I am thinking of getting 2000mW antenna with the specifications as follows: NEW USB WIFI ADAPTER KASENS G5000 (2011 IMPROVED MODEL). 2000mW + HF + 10dBi OMNI ANTENNA HIGH SENSITIVITY.   6. ah yes, many thanks for the input, I am now inclined towards this: USB WIFI ADAPTER KASENS 2000mW ANTENNA 10dBi RT8187L 2000 mW adapter but I wonder if I use the 2000 mW adapter can I get stronger signal ? at the moment I only get 2 bar out of 5 in Win 7

Hi All, I want to learn / study Linux by using my spare HP Desktop dc7700 PC without monitor (headless) so I wonder if the following scenario is working with Ubuntu / KUbuntu Linux: The ultimate goal is to be able to connect to the Linux server using VNC from the Windows Server and then scan the wireless LAN for weak password with aircrack or any other tools from (http://sectools.org/wireless.html) because I know that windows cannot be used for such thing anymore. I have setup BT 4u1 before but then I give up since I cannot make the USB WLAN working or get the IP address :-| but so far I have tried using Ubuntu for daily testing but not serious hacking and security matter. Hi All, I'm in the process of building a Linux server using spare desktop (HP dc 7700p PC with USB wireless adapter) and of course it will be used as the wireless security training exercise so I just wondering if Ubuntu or RHEL is suitable for me to learn ? BackTrack Linux is too hard to use and doesn't automatically detect the USB wireless network card usually. but I wonder if the tool aircrack can be installed on the RHEL or Ubuntu easily ? previously I have Backtrack 4 but the wireless LAN install is so hard :-|

Hi All, I'd like to know if it is possible to achieve this scenario for my web design, I've got company ITIL diagram that I'd like to make it show the hyperlink to a file download for each respective box (mouse hover / over effect) should I create a HTML table for this or create image mappings from the VISIO diagram .vsd file ? basically what I want is when the mouse is hovering the box, it displays the DIV list of links on top of the diagram only Does anyone know how to achieve this ? Because if you just sitting down doing nothing and browsing the internet wouldn't be a good report to your supervisor or boss These are some of the following task that i usually do: 1. Test Backup and Recovery strategy 2. Check antivirus status and windows update 3. Windows Server and VM maintenance 4. Hardware and Software Inventory tracking 5. researching for better software / hardware to invest and implement in the company.

Hi All, I've got Dell Vostro 1500 which has Intel 3945abg network and broadcom builtin network card, i also put EDIMAX EW7318USg (rt73USB) network card on my BT4 system, how do i connect to Network wireless using wlan0 and wired eth0 DHCP using Backtrack 4 final ? i tried to plug in the network card and enable the card using ifconfig but still failed ? any help would be greatly appreciated.   17. Hi All, I'm about to do the Domain Controller + DHCP and DNS role transfer from Windows Server 2003 Std. R2 SP2 into Windows Server 2008 Std. R2 SP 1, is there anything that i should be careful about ? Here's the current AD Domain details: Domain Functional Level: Windows 2000 Native (since there is Samba Server) [*]ServerA: DC + 1st DNS + DHCP (this will be decommissioned) - Windows Server 2003 x86 R2 SP2 [*]ServerB: DC + 2nd DNS + All FSMO Role + Exchange Server 2007 SP1 - Windows Server 2003 x64 R2 SP2 I'm afraid if there is any incompatibilities in running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Server 2003 then I could not restore the Server A from backup image (Acronis True Image backup). Any kind of help in how to run Server 2008 R2 as a DC in Windows 2003 domain side-by-side would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you could be right sir :-| but since we have soo many VMs inside the SAN datastore backing it up to the NAS took soo long to finish ~ approx. 29 hrs which is over lapped 4 hrs. see the current server deployment diagram, I make it easier for you to see the network connection. The reason that I chose this configuration is that direct connection from the SAN into the ESXi servers without anything in the middle, can eliminate the single point of failure caused by the Switch and also provide redundancy. each color in the iSCSI network is different IP subnet by itself. from the ESXi into the production network i put two cable connected to two different ports and then add those pNIC into same vSwitch for failover Any kind of comments will be greatly appreciated.
  19. Hi All, I'm looking for your suggestion and advise in utilizing the empty unused Local SATA-II datastore for my VM. I've got the following ESXi 4.0 build 164009 and a valid license of vSphere Essentials license, therefore I could use VCB but the problem is that using NBD from the SAN into the backup server is way too slow :-| it took 55 hrs to fullbackup the whole 1 TB VMFS partition (D2D over 2 network subnet). and now I'm thinking that rather than using backup solution Is it possible to clone the VM on the fly to more than 2 datastore like clustering service fault tolerance? (in this case to local datastore and the SAN_VMFS) in case there is a failure in the SAN, the VM can run off the Local Datastore, well it doesn't have to be realtime though. or perhaps there is a VCB backup that can copy the VM from he SAN VMFS into the local datastore vmfs ? that is also possible. Any kind of comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi All, I'm now at the stage of creating a backup strategy for my current vSphere 4 (2x ESXi + 1x vCenter Server + 1 iSCSI SAN), but at the moment the purple arrow (which is the NBD mode backup to the backup server is running very2 slow around 243 MB/minutes according to the Backup Exec result log. (To backup 800 GB LUN it takes 55 hours.) for the VM which has got RDM partition attach into it, i can just make it a virtual mode so that the VCB v1.5 can do the snapshot and quiesce the EXT3 Filesystem. The reason in using the NBD mode to transfer the VM backup is that to make the backup process to run faster without encryption but it turns out to be slower that what i thought, if anyone got a better solution in using SAN mode or even HotAdd mode please share your comments and suggestion here. Note: The network between iSCSI SAN andthe 2x ESXi servers are different subnet (see the color coding) Blue cylinder indicates NTFS partition while the Black cylinder indicates the VMFS any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

OK, Thanks for the reply Decepticon, For your info, I share my hard to believe experience in configuring my iSCSI SAN with you here: MD3000i is just a small entry level SAN device which can only use one single cable to access the iSCSI target, so no matter how complex the configuration is, the I/O performance will not be as great as the adding managed switch to perform VLAN trunking. http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_gee...ing-vmware.html --> the last question #4 is the eye opener so by using the deployment diagram that i supplied on top, it is not possible to achieve high performance greater than single cable connection :-| hope that helps you in the future, Cheers, Devastated and desperate admin :-(
  22. Hi Decepticon, Yes, that'd be a nother option though, apart from getting a managed switch which can support VLAN trunking. Until now, I just couldn't believe why direct connection to my iSCSI SAN could not give me the same result compare to put a managed switch in between and implementing VLAN trunking. Basically In my Windows 2003 x64 Std VM, I'm using enhanced VMXnet NIC and i only use ESXi software initiator. I wonder if i install MS iSCSI initiator would that be able to boost performance ?

Hi Decepticon, I was thinking to redesign the network all over again from scratch, instead of having different subnet for each cable would it be better off to perform trunking directly from the ESXi Servers into the SAN to utilize 2x 1 GB Ethernet cable to boost the data performance for the VM without the use of any switch in between the SAN and Servers. well, the case is that: in total 15 x 300 GB SAS HDD I've created large RAID-5 LUN from 14 x 300 GB and then i created 1 TB of VMFS partition and the SQLIO benchmark is really horrible for the VM on the SAN as oppose to the local SATA 7200k rpm. see the result below: *Local HDD: 4x 500 GB SATA 7200 rpm RAID - 5 * C:\SQLTEST>sqlio.exe sqlio v1.5.SG 1 thread reading for 30 secs from file testfile.dat using 2KB IOs over 128KB stripes with 64 IOs per run initialization done CUMULATIVE DATA: throughput metrics: IOs/sec: 8826.73 _MBs/sec: 17.23 _ while *SAN HDD: 14x 300 GB SAS 15000 rpm RAID - 5 * C:\SQLTEST>sqlio.exe sqlio v1.5.SG 1 thread reading for 30 secs from file testfile.dat using 2KB IOs over 128KB stripes with 64 IOs per run initialization done CUMULATIVE DATA: throughput metrics: IOs/sec: 2314.03 *MBs/sec: 4.51 *

Hi All, I'm suffering very slow performance in using my VM deployed on the iSCSI SAN-VMFS datastore, the following attachment shows the deployment diagram which i believe already according to the best practice around the net by segregating the network from SAN into the server. http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_geek/2009/01/a-multivendor-post-to-help-our-mutual-iscsi-customers-using-vmware.html However, after reading the quoted article, it seems that no matter how fast the disk is, using SAN in a VMWare environment it will always be slow around 160 MBps :-| This usually means that customers find that for a single iSCSI target (and however many LUNs that may be behind that target 1 or more), they can't drive more than 120-160MBps. is there anything that i should do to boost performance ?
