  1. Ok well I have a new project that I came up with. The project isn't really anything special but I just need a pointer in the right direction. Let me explain the project, if it doesn't make sense its cause I just came down from a trip.

    Project: 'Knowledge'

I want to learn how the internet works, and the many languages (not learn them all hahaha). So I really need some books, topics and ideas to go research on. I also want to learn how the whole web page works by this I mean the server which holds the website info to how the website gets its name.

I don't need to learn how to do graphics I have friends that can do that.

So what I'm really asking is, what is some good reading material on HTML, JAVA and How the servers work.

Note I have been researching on the internet(Wikipedia Howstuffworks) all of which has given me valuable info but I need more. Thank you

EDIT: I do have money, lots of money, so post anything that i can buy to help me learn.

HTML isn't hard to learn... you also got plenty of GUI to edit web pages! not as perfect that writing the code by hand... but something to start with.

How Server works?! Well... which kind of server's services? Web, FTP etc...; then which kind of platform? Solaris, Linux, Mac, Windows?!

If i am you, I will subscribe to one of those online certificate training! they've got plenty of option... it will be more interesting and easier to be disciplined, than having tons of books...

and use Google, it's your friend

    good luck man

  2. Is there a tool to reset default windows xp services? To like automatic etc again.

I was just wondering if it were possible, it would save alot of time, then from going through each one trying to restore them all.

what's wrong with the default service manager of Windows?

It makes you go through each one trying to restore them all?

how many services you need to disable? you probably need 90% of those services up running to have windows stable and functioning...

  3. I'm french too. I leave near Geneve.

I profit to wish you all a merry christmas and a happy new year. I'm gonna see my parents at strasbourg today and my friends at calais next week.

So, see you in 2007

    Joyeux Noël a toi aussi!

  4. You can't RAID external harddrives which are USB or FIrewire, unless someone was to produce a 'RAID' car with these two interfaces.

If you had eSata then it would be easy.

Best bet its to back up once a week onto the second drive and then in between backups store the second drive in a very safe place.

Yeah, you can have a USB raid that works, its just a bit of a hack.

    See here: http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-ga...raid-5-solution

We've got some LACIE external USB disk and you can raid them, using their software...

not sure how it works, but it does

  5. What is the name of the default Gnome window manager?

The only window manager I know by name is Compiz and that's because of the publicity it gets for xgl lol

    you mean metacity?

  6. does anyone know anygood software for windows that will let me do this you know for packet sniffing and bypassing wifi wep key's and i was watching a programme on the tv where they bypassed the wep key and watched what the user was doing on their computer i would love it someone gave me the name of this software!!.

    Thanks

    mark

    get a life man...

would you appreciate if someone was sniffing your traffic?! - WOULD YOU LIKE IT?????

  7. any graphic card program such as NVIDIA, gives that option under windows... u just need to install it.

but that means your having to install software should shouldn't have to, this is a basic feature and it should be there :P

Well.... never said Windows was better than linux

  8. The default gnome windows manager has this feature built in, and so you can force any window to always be on top. Too bad your not using Linux (Another victory for Linux over Windows ;)).

any graphic card program such as NVIDIA, gives that option under windows... u just need to install it.

  9. is there any video player that will always be on top of what ever app i have up? the only program i have found that does this is Windows media player with its .... dont know what to call it.... this

    .... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a270/Neo...pg?t=1166969475

this plays on top of everything, well at least the program i want it to(world of warcraft) it would be nice if some one knew another program that could do this that i could move the window some or resize it or any thing thanks in advance for your help.

    VLC does it

  10. ok so i'm getting my wii and want to hook it up to the net ...

it will stand upstairs , my pc and router are downstairs ...

    i currently have a non-wireless router

my first idea would be to run a cat5 cable upstairs and use a ethernet2usb adapter to hook it up to the wii .... but my parents wont let me lay such a long cat5 cable upstairs... and wont let me drill another hole through the roof (yes i did this b4 to hook up my tv ...)

so now i'm wondering wich solutions are there to make the wii hook up to a wireless network that i can still use my current cat5 connection to my pc.

ive checked the net and seen some wireless bridges etc is it possible to use those to connect my wii to my router (so [router] - }wireless bridge{ [wii] )

or will i need to purchase a new wireless router (hope not)

what solutions are there and wich are the cheapest ?

Well... it really depends... you got plenty of option..

First is your pc or laptop (upstairs in your room) running a G or B wireless card?... A G would catch a further signal and run to 54 Mbit/s than a B (11 Mbit/s), so at this point, you might wanna just keep the wireless router or WAP (depending what you get), downstairs and then see how strong the signal would be in your room upstairs.

So at this point, you can either decide to get another wireless router, which you can find for 50-60 €, even less and then you're set... now if the signal is low in your room, then you can always use a repeater, to repeat the signal, and in this case, all you need is to plug it to an AC jack.

Now if you do not wanna switch the router to a wireless router, you can still buy a WAP device, probably 30€, and then hook it up to the router...

now if you still get a low signal in the room, then you might have to buy a repeater

In both case, I would say put more money and get a wireless router, i mean they make them pretty cheap today... and if you buy a WAP for 30€, you might as well invest another 20€ and get a wireless router.

There is another option to run the Ethernet connection through the AC power... Never tried it, not sure how to set it up, but maybe someone of the forum has tried before...

    hope that helped!

  11. Bloopers at work? I work at Hak5. Do I need to say anymore?

So this one time Wess was building a box, formatted the drive, installed windows, then went to install office or open office or something and got an error that there wasnt enough free disk space. He was like, "wtf this is an 80gig drive"....

...well, he had formatted it with FAT and was left with only a 2gb partition.

We didnt let him live it down for a while.

that's funny! which windows did he install? 98?

  12. Alright... any bloopers experienced or that happened to you at your work place or in a work setting?!

    Ok I will start mine...

I started a new job as Network Admin and it was a late afternoon, just got done working on the linux servers... and decided to end up the day by sending a general email to all the users on the network by explaining few things, I needed them to keep in mind...

Instead of "Hello everbody", I was so tired, I wrote "Hell everybody"...

well the boss of the company was attached to it too...

guess, i kind of freaked out a bit that day

  13. Taken from hackaday.com

    --------------------------

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

    network.http.pipelining

    network.http.proxy.pipelining

    network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

    2. Alter the entries as follows:

    Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

    Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

    3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

  14. can someone give me some tips on how to speed up firefoxas much as i can?

Open firefox configuration interface, by typing in the url bar

    about:config

Change "network.http.pipelining" and network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

and you can set the amount of requests to handle at one ... "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" - put therefore any value here

    have fun

  15. Alright guys....
