  1. I used to use something like this back in 2003-04, it was the only utility i could find for multiple desktop back then. I might have a copy of that software somewhere at my parents. I will come back if i can find it (problem is i can't remember software's name).

There are 2 quick alternatives to such software:

Either you could use remote desktop from an another screen in a bigger res than eee, or you could switch a different Desktop Shell like bblean. Check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_desktop

    Edit:

After a bit snooping around i found the utility i used back then: http://www.nearestexit.com/sdesk/

    Guess what it is called...

  2. There is something called MinInstall (or something) Disc. It is used to boot a computer in busybox and install Ubuntu either directly via apt or a local source on the network. The Disc image is only 10 mb. You can UNetbootin any USB (16mb) and install everthing else from internet.

  3. It was like a year ago my Univ DNS server updated its database, and it don't know what DNS forwarding is. My CNAMEs are accessable from rest of the world but my univ... I set them up like a year ago.

I have personally used OpenDNS for like two and half years, never had an problem...

  4. ive used vmware workstation for quite some time it does basically what youre asking. and more

I like VMware Workstation for two features, linked Clone and easier virtual network configuration. But VirtualBox is 6x lighter on HDD, and it leaves no trace after closing.

  5. I bought a Asus Eee PC 901, i didn't like the design of AAO. Plus 901 had better battery and bluetooth. The only minus with 901 is main storage, but i use my one as a thin client, so not an issue for me. And maybe a big factor is Eee are the easiest one to mod. You can go for a 900HA, it is a 901 with a harddrive, or a eee 1000.

As soon as you replace a SSD with a HDD you will loose atleast 1 hrs of battery. Battery was very important for me, now i can run whole school day without charging.

  6. I have decided to postpone upgrade for next 10 months, will wait for better i7, talked to some friends and thats what they suggested. The only thing i am missing in my current server is Virtualization support in processor, i guessed that i wouldn't need it anyway.

As for function, it is currently working as NAS, Seedbox, and C++/Erlang develoment station (Virtual Machine).

And as of PSU i will upgrade everything except for the main Chassi. I like mATX for factor (i know it is not optimal).

  7. Have been using Downthe.NET nearly two years now. Downthe.NET provides cheap hosting with good customer support. Downthe.NET is able to fix most issues with in 24 hrs. Downthe.NET offers better service then HostGator for less price.

I might even be able to get you 20% off...

  8. I want to measure how much data i have transferred so that i can choose right plan for Mobile Broadband (3G).

I am running OpenSSH server on Ubuntu Desktop, and OpenSSH Client/Putty on Ubuntu Desktop/Windows XP.

  9. This can be circumvented by running the ssh service on port 443.

SSH server doesn't deliver HTTPS data... You will have to use something like GNU HTTPTunnel for converting SSH to HTTP on server and convert back HTTP to SSH. The technique is call firewall hole punching. I never got it working with SSH, but i did get it working with OpenVPN.

What i ended up with was a DSL [Damn Small Linux] running in QEMU, and SSH socks proxy to my DSL.

  10. If i get it right no such technology is present at the time, Graphics is a delicate thing, and can only be processed on the local computer. All the technology existing today uses emulated S3 (or similar) card for video on remote location or VM. Plus if you ever get a good graphics card to deliver images to a slave card, you will have major lag.

Games are meant to be run on local hardware and not on server not even virtual machine on local computer.

  11. I am planning to upgrade a computer which is acting as an server. The machine has been running constantly for last 10+ months with some restarts.

Currently it is running on a Intel P4 2.8. I am not experiencing any problems with it, i just want to have Inte-VTx or AMD-V support on it. I know i will get better performance for a server with either a Opteron or Xeon, but they cost to much for my budget. I have chosen two processors; AMD Phenom FX X4 9550, and Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400. The biggest difference between both is L2 cache, Intel has more. The price difference between both is ca. 1200 SEK (AMD is cheaper).

Which one would be better if i would like to run these for next 5+ years (current P4 is in its 6th year)? And what would i have to think about to get a longer life (need the server to be quite, it will be in my bedroom, currently you can hardly hear it)?

PS Will any of these processors will be supported by a 200W PSU [Power Supply Unit]. Going to run integrated graphics, 2 HDD (500GB @ 7200, 40Gb @ 5400), 2 DVD Drives (reader and burner), 4GB RAM (will upgrade to 16GB eventually) to start with.

  12. Thanks for the ideas everyone... I'm going to attempt an XP install.

    Follow the guide from http://wiki.eeeuser.com/

I was going to try puppeee but its wireless software only supports WEP, (and my Time Capsule is running WPA, and I don't want to change all my other clients)

I think it would have been solved by installing WPA Supplement.

I would have stuck with xandros but I formatted it before I realized that I could change the interface to advanced mode, and the recovery CD requires that it be installed from a CD. I know that sounds really dumb.

I restored my eee pc once using a 2GB USB Drive.

PS You can check http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ for more useful info on eee...
