  1. A virtual server is a server that can host multiple virtual machine at ones. It is used today to merge multiple servers into one physical machine. By this you can extract more power from a single single machine, while saving floor space, not to talk about electrical bill. Lets say you have 10 virtual server in a single physical server, you only need a 10th of the floor space, and you will pay only 10th of the electrical bill for servers.

A server in most cases only uses like 5-20% of its capacity. By combining then info one single physical machine you can extract as much as 80% of its power.

  2. I get error 400 for http://bf2.hak5.org/ even through a proxy.

I am getting 400, cause i think there is no webserver on bf2.hak5.org. It is supposed to be a game server, so most probably even TCP isn't used. To know if it really is working port scan bf2.hak5.org on bf2 game server port.

Don't have a computer (only have Eee PC 901 and Eee Box B202 besides a Server) or a copy of BF2, so no game for me.

... there's always a message about the shader file missing (or something like that) ...

Can't you just copy the file from internet (or search the CD/Installation) and put in the location error displays.

  3. It has to do with how VLC is made. I have been mad at this for a while now (like 4 years).

    Little workaround:

Run Firefox in fullscreen with a blank black page between your desktop and VLC. Remmeber to have all the apps behind firefox while running VLC...

  4. With in next week i am going to order parts for a dead computer. I am going to get a Core 2 Quad Q9550, i was wondering how much power do i need to supply. I have a PSU on 250W, which worked fine before on a Athelon 64 3800+ (Q9550 has only 6W more on TDP). I am going to use same graphics card for the time being (ATI Radeon HD2600 Pro 256MB), while i was playing Assassins Creed or Crysis Core on 3800+ i never got passed 200W±5.

Do i really need to upgrade to a new PSU, if how big? I don't really want to buy one right now, maybe in 6 months when I will get a better graphics card (again maybe).

    Although I will be going from DDR-400 (PC3200) 2GB to DDR2-800 4GB (PC6400)

  5. It look like i will be buying a q9550 instead of a phenom II. In my life time i have on ly used one AMD (Athelon 64 3800+) machine and it gave up on me. As for all other Intel (486, PIII, 3xP4, C2D, and couple of Celeron), never had any problem with them... except for aging. AMD was only 2½ years old, while i have been pushing most of Intels for 5+ years (and one of p4 has been running for 5+ years 24/7 more or less).

  6. Everything is cheaper with the AMD models, but they lack performance of the Intel models, for years.

That is what a AMD fan forgets, with Intel\s price, you do get performance... When was the last time AMD was ahead of Intel...

  7. hell, maybe for wine they should just go ahead and set it up where you put in a legit copy of windows, it rips everything but the gui and extra programs (ie. notepad/etc) and just boots with that for a compatibility layer when using WINE. That way it *is* emulation, BUT only to emulate the Compatibility layer.

True, i hate to use WINE, if i ever need to run windows app on a Linux machine, VirtualBox is my best bet...

  8. Do you have the K-Lite Codec Pack installed

It has all of the codecs necessary for the computer to work with the formats

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite..._Codec_Pack.htm

i Have K-Lite Mega Pack Installed. ANd it still chocked on AVC. Although 720p Quicktime did play quite well with Quicktime Alternative Lite, but 1080p was a bummer.

im not hatin' at all, but why dont you just build a nice small cheap rig? I mean you would get WAAAYYYY more performance than a eeepc rig, for not much more at all.

If i build a new rig, i want it to shout out power. It is not going to be a cheap rig (cause money went to a Eee Box).

I use a DVI to HDMI cable converter, and works fine with my HDTV. In fact, using it vs the DVI to VGA adapter gives me a better picture and allows my Pixel Res to jump from 1360x768 to 1920x1080.

I have a screen with a DVI-D in, so i don't use any adapter at all, as of resolution i use max a 20" allows, 1680x1050.

  9. The only PCs i own right now are Eee PC 901 and Eee Box B202, and non of them can decode AVC. The best bet has bin WMV-HD, it worked flawlessly under Windows Media Player 9 (haven't bothered t upgrade it yet). I think I will have to wait till next (when i buy a better rig) to watch Hak5 in HD...

  10. What i want to do is, duplicate Office 2007, iTunes, etc GUI in C#. Can it be done, if how?

Basically, i hate Windows GUI, and for my applications i want to put a little more fancy skin on it, just don't know how.

    Any pointers...

PS I do know, i can buy wome plugin, but i don't have that kind of money...
