Recently I upgraded a couple of PC to Adobe Acrobat reader 8, once I had opened a PDF the Adobe updater would run at 100%cpu grinding the box to a halt, also I could not kill it I had to reboot my machine. Since I have downgraded to Acrobat 7 the problem has gone away

It's a known issue, see This link or you can disable the updater from the command promt with:

REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\8.0\FeatureLockdown" /v bUpdater /d 0 /t REG_DWORD /f

I assumed that you're using windows, although your avatar doens't say so.

Yes I use windows in the 9-5 plus family/friends IT support, excuse my avatar he doesn't get out much ;)
