how to install yahoo messenger on unix

Im very new to unix and im running it on a virtual machine, i already downloaded it but how do i install it

Well I don't think there is an official client of that for any *nix flavor. You can't just install the Windows client, go for Gaim or something similar instead. If it is some graphical and user centric distribution you might have it installed already.

But i downloaded the unix version of yahoo messenger

when i click on it it opens some files

I stand corrected, there is a "unix" version of it for linux and freebsd. Just follow the instructions on the download page, they are as clear as they are gonna get.
