I would say a good "hackers" guide is to start from the white hat perspective. Understanding protocols, headers, FTPs, SMTPs, etc. will build a solid foundation of any hackers skill set. Contributing programming to other developers is also a great way to learn. I could not tell you what book is better; they are all different. Many may disagree with me, but trial and error are the ways I learn best. Google University has some good notes, too.

One other question: Hack what, exactly. The definition of hacker, from websters dictionary is:

3. Computer slang

a: a computer enthusiast

b: a microcomputer user who attempts to gain unauthorized access to proprietary computer systems.

Depending on what you want to do, enthusiasm is probably the better of the definitions. I am sure many here are enthusiast (but with other skill sets, too).
