Installing Windows Xp Sp3 On Broken Laptop With Pxe

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I'm trying to install XP SP3 on a laptop with a broken CD drive. I get successfully into PXE until an "Access Violation" comes up. I'm using TFTPD64 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and I can't seem to figure out what permissions I need the pxelinux.0 to have.

Anyone have any ideas?

Permissions problem in deed, are /tftpboot and pxelinux.0 world readable?

Edit: Take a look at this article, it might solve your problem, http://serverfault.com/questions/280537/how-to-chroot-the-tftp-service

Why don't you just activate Windows Deployment Services under the server's role settings?

I had a WDS server imaging new systems inside a half hour with no issues. Windows 7 is more difficult to setup, but XP is a breeze.

Check http://thommck.wordpress.com/2010/01/06/installing-windows-xp-over-the-network-using-windows-deployment-services/ for more info.

Since you're using 2008 R2 there really is no reason not to use what's built in.

I've run in to the same kinds of issues in the past - my solution was to abandon the solution we were using and stand up an linux box with FOG installed (http://www.fogproject.org/) - it's fantastically simple to use - create an image on one machine, add drivers for other dis-similar hardware if you need to, sysprep, capture and deploy...
