Windows Server 2003 Vs. 2008

Thinking about running my own personal server at home. I have free access to both of these operating systems because of my Microsoft Academic Alliance membership from my major in school.

Just wanted to get some outside input on these two systems...

Which one would you use, and why?

Do either of them have any major exploits, etc.?

Thanks your your input!

Both have security issues, 2003 more than 2008 just because it has been around longer.

I'd go with 2008 I'd imagine that when you leave school there will be more demand for 2008 and 2003.

You could always break new ground and go for 2012, RC is out now.

I didn't know that 2012 was available already.. I may give that a shot. Might just try it as a VM to see what it's like, along with 2008. I guess thats the best bet, right?

Thanks for your suggestions.

I chucked it into a VM but haven't had time to look at it yet. Funniest thing is that it still comes with a shared images, videos and music folder in everyones home directory

Windows 2003 is out of date and MS isn't supporting it anymore I believe. I would go with Windows Server 2008 instead, its a lot secure and stable too.

MS can continue supportig it till 2015, but to me its old, I would stick with 2008 instead.

It may be old but it will be in businesses for years to come. I'm still seeing the occasional NT4 box and some 2000 servers. They are usually running phone systems for some reason.
