arterie
Are yagis like this one just shit that are worse than a simple homemade cantenna? The 300m no obstacle illustration is not very assuring.
Sparda
You would probably be better ff with a parabolic antenna. A 'cantena' only serves to make a omnidirectional antenna directional and doesn't help as much as a parabolic antenna for single strength. If you are going to set some thing up for cross building communication, two dishes is the way to go, they help focus the transited signal and collected more of the received signal. arterie
What I want is a directional antenna which can help me to single out which house an AP is coming from, and being able to do that on a distance of 100-300m and even better if it also work on longer distances than that. I shall read more on the differences between the antenna types.
lein
I was actually looking at making myself a Yagi. Now I think I might just buy one as I don't have the time but it'd be a fun project. I am hoping to boost internet 3G signal for a friend of mine in a regional area.
Deevd
A friend of mine told me this one worked well: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...#ht_3047wt_1137 But I was interested by this little guy: http://cgi.ebay.com/30dBm-NextG-USB-Yagi-H...27abfc4ebf#shId Is not too big, verry handy, come's in directly with USB, and seems to be pretty powerfull :) No one any idea wich one is better out of those two? lein
I'm thinking more along the lines of: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/14dbi-YaGi-antenna-...=item1c11f2ba41 It's going to be connected directly to the modem. This is what I was going to build http://www.perite.com/vk7jj/nextgyagi.html
3TeK
It's going to be connected directly to the modem. why in the hell would you do that?

metatron
You would probably be better off getting a cheap directional patch antenna as there smaller and have about the same dBi ratings for the price.
lein
why in the hell would you do that? Because the modem has an input for an antenna. And the little one it came with was wildly in adequate, and the broomstick 6dBi antenna that is currently connected only just gets enough signal to work. And as it acts as a wireless router it would be the better option. Or are you just pulling my chain?

If you would wan't to increase the range of your modem you shouldn't get a Yagi antenna, because those are directional... You should get an omni directional antenna ! lein
If you point it at the cellular tower it's exactly what you need. I'm talking about a fixed installation into a house. A Yagi is perfect. Direct that sucker at the tower and let the magic happen. I can just imagine it now **dream sequence**
lein
I think maybe the confusion is coming from the fact that I will be using MY Yagi on a 3G wireless modem/router on the 850Mhz (UMTS) permanently installed to a house not 2.4Ghz for a WiFi for war driving or stealing megabytes from my neighbours. Should have said immediately it was for using towards a 3G tower :) We can't guess that sort of info you know :P
