    learning

Hak5 is not a community of stealing other gaming accounts or personal information for unauthorized uses. This is a community of those who want to learn how things work and how to change the outcome or find vulnerabilities to better system and or software. I do not speak for all of the users on Hak5 but I think most would agree its people who have ill intentions who give the hacker community a bad rep. So if you really want to learn how to do such things, start searching google and teach yourself.
  3. Since it's the summer and I'm not at the University, what are some books you would suggest reading? Little about me. I'm a Computer Science major. I'm interested in network security and penetration testing or really anything security related. Currently I'm reading The Basics of Hacking and Penetration testing, Second Edition, by Patrick Engbreston. Feel free to leave links or books that you feel would be beneficial to read. Hopefully a lot of users contribute and this would be a good resource for new comers such as myself to look at.

    Linux Question

Not Linux Mint I was referring to the penguintosh.com link. But from what Cooper said I'll try it out! Thanks! Will update soon! UPDATE: Sweet, I download Linux Mint, I believe Version 12. I used http://penguintosh.com/ which worked perfectly. Once it was all loaded (linux) I couldn't connect to the internet (using firefox). As being new to a lot of things I didn't know how to connect it. So I guess for the time being I will work on figuring out the internet connection issue and then go from there.

Update: On second thought I won't give it a try. Ran the download through VirusTotal, it has a trojan.

    Linux Question

Update: Just got my computer back, its running Snow Leopard. I want to play around with several linux distros before I install one. Problem I've run into now is creating a Live USB on a Mac. I'm currently, at this moment, working with BootCamp to see if I can accomplish the task.

    Linux Question

So the hard drive on my 2008 macbook air died and I plan on getting a new one in the near future. I don't want to reinstall the original OS but instead a linux distro. I wanted to install Ubuntu on it but would that work? What bit would I use if so, 32 or 64? Thanks!

    Mentor

If there is anyone out there who can help me? My goal is to gain as much experience as possible while in college to make my self very marketable before I graduate. I've applied for numerous internships all over the country. I just need help with a few things. 1) Where are some open source projects I could work on, or how could I start my own? 2) Any conferences or gatherings I could go to that would enable me to network with others? 3) What are some other things that I haven't mentioned that would make me more marketable? (Aside from GPA and being active in a club on campus) (I'm a Computer Science Major but my focus is mainly security)
  12. Would I create a UDP server? Then within that add code for specific tasks?
  13. I have been tasked with helping develop a packet crafter for a project. Long story short, I have create a packet crafter, explain how it works, and present it to a few professors. From my understanding packet crafting is like MAC spoofing and IP spoofing combined. The basic idea is to take in packets, modify them, send them back out. But appearing that the packets are coming from a different location. I've just started my research but if anyone has any useful links and tips, I'd appreciate your help. My first question is how would I start creating one? 2) What would be the best language to use? 3) Any suggestions for software? Thanks! (If my understanding of the topic is incorrect or off somewhat please correct me but like I mentioned I'm in the early stages of research.) As I progress with this project I will upload my results.
  14. Thanks for the speedy reply!
  15. I am a freshmen in college and I want to enter the cyber security field. I want to apply for internships my junior year. My question to all the pro's out there, what is the best advice you could give me? To define the question I mean what open source projects, certifications, skills, and ect should I master to put on my applications? I want to stand out, I want to have the edge. Thanks for taking your time to read my post. ~ PG
