  1. I agree, that is why I was thinking of a cron job to put it to sleep at night and a wake up script on my router to prod it in the morning before I start so it is up and ready for me. An extra idea I've just had is to have a port knocking setup on the router to wake it up if I'm away and need to access it remotely while it is turned off.

All this is good in theory but I've got so many other projects on the go or waiting to start it will probably be christmas before I get round to actually doing this!

  2. Convert the image on the USB stick into a VMware image and use VMware to boot from that, should work as that is how I tested some operating systems on VMware which would be placed on compact flash.

Do you have any links to info on how to do that? I'm sure I could google some up but if you have any that you know work it would save effort and potential red herrings.

  3. Couldn't you just boot it on your system locally?

I want to play with the start up scripts and auto hardware detect stuff and so if I make a change I don't want to have to shut the pc down boot it, test it and then restart the machine again. That is why I wanted to get vmware working so I could just hit the restart button and see what happens.

I've tested my only other spare machine and even with the newest bios it won't boot from usb.

  4. I'm trying to make a bootable usb drive and it would be good to test it with vmware but by default it doesn't support booting usb drives.

I've read a few sites that say it isn't possible and a few that give solutions which involve mapping the usb to a drive on the vmware and booting that.

Has anyone here figured out an easy way to do it?

  5. Its been a while since I powered it up so I can't remember what the CPU is, I think it is an AMD 1800.

What would be good would be to have hibernate setup and some way to auto wake it up in the morning and sleep it at night. I may see if it does wake on lan and have my openwrt router wake it up and a cron job put it to sleep.

Only problem is that I've never managed to get hibernate to successfully work. I'll have to give it another try.

  6. Inspired by 2x10 I decided to have a look at my server and realised it is making a lot of noise, using too much power, and taking up too much space so I'm thinking of swapping it.

I have a spare shuttle pc (LINK) which, when I bought it, the shop said that it wasn't suitable for leaving on 24/7 which the server would be.

I am usually the only user on the server, so it is never really stressed, my only concern is with cooling as the shuttle uses its own cooling system rather than having a fan on the cpu.

Does anyone leave a shuttle running 24/7? Has anyone seen one burn out or do they run fine?

    Comments please

  7. Someone contact the hostel and see when they are quiet in August. From that, pick a date. We all book rooms and take it from there. Find out if they have a room we could take over for the few days as well so we can set stuff up and secure it.

As soon as people are commited to coming to the event I reckon that things will firm up.

  8. I agree we should be dynamic about things, and ding fun stuff is of course good. But I also like to defend actually doing some tech stuff. This is a tech/hack meetup, the rest of life is quite big enough to go outside. personally, i'd rather do something different for once. i can do that stuff anytime, this is a rarer opportunity.

But theres plenty we can be doing. London is full of "stuff" lol. sites, bars, history, street technology, people. theres something for everyone.

I agree, I can go out and get drunk any time (tonight probably) but getting together with a bunch of hackers is a rare event and I don't want to spend it all in a stupor or out sight seeing

  9. I'd be up for a bit of that. My main areas are wifi and web app so I need some hands on on going after wired networks. I always learn better when I have a reason and if I have someone to show me why things work or don't work

  10. How about "Most audacious social engineering stunt"? I was initially thinking how many passwords can you social engineer but they are hard to confirm but if someone comes back from a session with free tickets to a gig or having been allowed into the old bomb shelters then that would be good.

For the vender stuff, I'm sure with your contacts cyber_eagle, you could at least get a couple of books or someone could get some company to pay for a few beers.

With the wifi, the last tresure hunt I did was just around a small uni campus. You had to report back the exact location of the AP, saying which building it was in wasn't good enough, it had to be under the table at the back of room 101.

  11. I don't live in London so I'm prob no help organising the logistics, but I'm happy to help organise anything else, getting people together, setting any stuff up for while we're there and whatever.

    same here, anything to help

Is it about time for a wiki page? We can start getting people ideas on what they wanna do when they are there as opposed to the purely organisational side of things. The crazier the better, its better to have too many ideas and throw out the bad ones hehe.

A wifi tresure hunt, find the APs and hidden info to solve a puzzle.

Are we going to try to get venders involved? If so we need to start talking to them now. Maybe get some prizes/give aways like at shmoocon,

  12. Last year I went to Palmer's Lodge and I rather liked it. It wasn't the cheapest, but at 12 pounds a night it was still quite affordable, especially since it is close to a metro station in zone 2, has free internet (and wifi), clean accomodations, checkout time at 11:00, and generous (and rather good) breakfasts. So far my two cents.

Got to admit, it sounds better than the one I stayed in even though it was nice.

So now we have a location, a couple of possible places to stay, we just need a venue. I think talking to the universities would be good, they will be empty of students in August so will have spare rooms. Talking to a comp sci department may even get better deals.

Anoyone out there at uni in London?

  13. I was staying in there while doing the SANS wireless security course. Obviously I didn't use any of the hacking techniques taught to us but I'm sure if I had I would have been able to access a number of local APs without any problems :-)

From what I remember they only had sit down access, no wifi. They do have an outdoor spa though!

Anyway, you get the access at the meeting and by the time you get back from the pub you don't need access at the hostel!

  14. When I went to SANS in London I stayed at a realy cheap hostel, about 6 quid a night.

SANS held the event at the the University of Westminster. The location was good, it has a tube stop just outside and is geared up for students so penny pinching hackers should fit in fine.
