  1. Eh, I've got a myspace account only because I was super bored on day and decided to make one for the hell of it to give me an excuse to mess with some html.

@ Darren, I may have added you last night when I read this thread. Sorry, I had just gotten back from the bar and was too drunk to read your entire post, haha.

  2. I can relate with VaKo on a few levels. I too, have used drugs and alcohol as a way to break my shell and become a more socialable person. I used to smoke pot on the weekends with my friends when I was in 8th and 9th grade and through them I met many more people. I was moving away from my quiet personality and turning into a person whom people liked. I actually had a reason to wake up in the morning.

Now, I no longer smoke pot, going on 3 years now since the last time. I quit because it became a habit far too dangerous to keep. (Most of my family are cops). But once I quit that I longed for something else to help me stay the person I was whenever under the influence of something - I was turning back into the quiet kid who never talked to anyone, especially women.

It was then that I began drinking whenever I had the chance, and always to a point of absolute drunkenness. I would get a fifth of vodka, rum, wiskey, whatever on friday evening and it would be gone within a few hours. I knew I had a probem but I had friends, and that's all that mattered to me.

To this day, I'm still an alcoholic but not as bad as I once was. After a few near death experiences (almost died a few times of alcohol poisoning - never once went to the hospital though. My father would have killed me if he found out) I changed my ways and slowed down my self destructive pattern.

Would I do it all again? Yeah, because through these life experiences I found out who my true friends were and although I only have 5 or so, they're all I need.

And I'm a fun drunk if you were wondering. I'm the guy who's running around hitting on women, shaking hands with guys I don't know, and buying rounds at the bar.

  3. I only wish they would take a step back and understand that no matter how many people they sue or how much they complain to governments and ISPs, they will never be able to stop people from trading files on the internet. There will always be a way to do so, it is inevitable.

Also in the discussion of music pirating, the majority of pop-culture music today are artists who produce shitty music, but that's a whole different discussion.

  4. This would involve taking the modem out of the laptop which may not be possible, I don't know if vaios are set up that way.

Remove the modem, fire up a blow torch and melt the board in some weird way, turning it into a paper weight.

Then you can have it on display for all your friends to see that early, 1990's technology can be useful for something.

  5. Go find an old box that running something like win 9x from a garage sale for dirth cheap (or a school district - they usually have old boxs in a closet somewhere), gut it, and toss them in the case that's to be sold and keep the goods from the other. Shouldn't take that long to do.

  6. Hell, if it boots and has network access use it. Linux would probally be the better choice, but a headless XP box + remote desktop works just as well IMO.

That's was something that I was considering. That or Win server 2k3 with remote access but I figured I would ask to see if there were any other ones that I may not know about that are easier to use and better than windows as server 2k3 would be extreme overkill for my purposes.

    Thanks for the input.

  7. I'm looking to turn my old box into a video/audio server for use over a home network. I was wondering if any of you guys and gals had any good ideas/suggestions for a OS that would be appropriate for this simple need in any price range.

All of my computers boot win xp at the moment but I have used Linux a lot before so running something along those lines isn't out of the question. Also, I'm trying to steer clear of just running a ftp program on the box because after much trial and error trying many of those, all I got was a headache.

    Thanks

  8. my firend gave me an old comp with a amd duron in it and i am just savin up some money so i can just put alot of hdds in it and just have it be a mass storage device for everything i have.

Damn a free, working computer. Nice. I'm waiting for summer as there is always one or two idiots that sell a old 1ghz comp for dirt cheap and they usually have a decient hdd in them during the garage sale season. Maybe even a few gems like old ass keyboards and apple II's.

Next year when I move out of the dorms into my apartment, I'm tossing win server 2003 or maybe a unix os, whatever will work best for a basic media storage on that box for ftp to the tivo im going to buy/build.

  9. *cough* *ignores politics* *cough*

I'm sticking with the pounds, shillings and pence ;)

As for the cables, I reckon it's much more rewarding when your box is made diy-style! That way, you get to say you really did 'make' your PC :D

Yes, agreed. Politics do not belong here, sorry for even bringing it up.

  10. The dorm set-up. Not much space in here but it works. Sorry for the poor quality photos, my digital camera is back home so I had to make due with my phone.

Ha, gotta love the duct-tape moddifications to the case.

The desktop I built about 5 years ago. AMD 1.4 GHz (forgot what series, far too lazy to check) with 256 mb ram and the cheapest mobo, sound card, video card, and case money can buy! I threw in three 250 gb drives once I got my laptop as I only use box for bittorrenting, ftp and storage for whatever I don't want on my laptop.

The laptop is a HP zv6000, AMD 64 3200+ Venice series with 512mb ram. Nothing too special here, I just drag it from class to class.

Both comps run XP pro corporate although I ocassionally use knoppix std or ubuntu live in the HP to screw with other student's wireless access points that they're are not supposed to have.

One thing that sucks about being a college student: all the money that could be dumped into building a new box simply no longer exists. Oh well, beer is a very important study that must be taken seriously in order to succeed at this game of higher education.

  11. Dude, where's the Rickards Red?!

They didn't have any at the Duty Free nor The Beer Store. Trust me, I would have picked some up. I used to work at a wine cellar/fine liqour/beers of the world store and we would get a case or two ocassionally of the Red and whatever other weird Canadian brews that you can't find in the US.

But for as broke as I was, I had no problem paying 17 bucks Canadian for a split case of Coors and Molson and 15 for two half-gallons of smirnoff red. Needless to say, the exchange rate kicks ass.

Oh, and I've come to known what crossing the bridge into heaven looks like. Here's the first liqour store we see:

I'm on the far right btw.

  12. Metatron: Pounds, shillings and pence mean nothing to the bulk of Hak5's audience ;-)

Poor US$, its taken a beating in the last 6 years.

Sadly it has. Oh well, that's what we get when a person is elected to the leader of our country and that of the free world who cannot speak coherent English nor form a complete sentence without reading off a teleprompter, word for word. And even then he gets his L's and I's confused because they look similar. Hopefully Ben Bernanke can help the American economy out of this hole.

  13. Here are my two gatos. The fat, white one is Boo-boo (aka Snoop) and the other Garthy. Sorry about the poor image quality, these were taken with my phone.

And as for the cat-hunter debate, Boo-boo has beaten the crap out of a few dogs before. One being the neighbor’s Doberman who got loose once last summer... I've never heard a dog cry that loud before. Just goes to show that they are capable of hurting things much larger than themselves.

  14. sounds like a plan batman! lol

but yeah they will probly block the torrent ports or something

Tell that to our uni halls admin, back when Kazaa was something special they tried to block it. Net result: we routed it threw port 80 and charged people money/beer/food/"supplys" to set it up for them.

Haha, sounds like me this past fall semester when my fellow freshman started up their shinny new Dells for the first time. In one month alone, I made over 200 bucks worth in beer cleaning computers of spam and ad programs, installing anti-virus applications that didn’t expire after three months, removing viruses, and running registry cleaners and hdd defragers. I even took the time to write up a very basic how to for each “client†so that he/she would be able to defrag their hdd or run ad-aware without having to call me every month or so for help. If they were willing to pay a little more (usually another beer or two) and had the slightest capability to learn, I'd teach them how to use bittorrent and dump their old p2p client.

In the end, I probably saved upwards of 30 Dells from their owners that semester alone because they didn’t have a clue on how to take care of them nor that it’s not a good idea to click, save, and run those damn AIM virus files that spread around campuses faster than syphilis.

  15. Here is a fascinating article that was featured on the topstories page of Digg.com a few days ago, which most of you have probably read already but here it is anyway. It talks about the general health problems that geeks tend to have in common as observed by this doctor and ways in which one can help relieve such disorders.

    http://www.carotids.com/lifestyle/health-p...geek-lifestyle/

As for myself and hyperfocus, I tend to experience it once I'm consumed in something that interests me. Like playing guitar or working on a computer.

  16. My summer ride. It's not a picture of my real bike (mine's still in storage and I'm up at school at the moment) but mine has the same color scheme and engine size (500 cc).

  17. Enjoying Canada and their wonderful 19 year old drinking age. My friends and I went to Canada for spring break this year because we were far too cheap to fly somewhere warm. Spending a week hitting up Windsor's night life was a great alternative.

Pre-drinking in the hotel: A must if you're on a budget, bars overcharge for watered down drinks.
