  1. petertfm,

One thing I've not been clear on about the Black/White List moduel is whether or not it works at the Pineapple level or if it's at the Karma level. By that I mean if I use your moduel and put a mac address in the Black list, will I be prevented from accessing the Pineapple at all or just from Karma? I've been worried about "Pineappling" myself out of web access accidentally as well so I haven't really messed with it. I definately use the Karma Black list that comes standard but I get annoyed at having to reset that each time I cycle power.

  2. Yes, it should work without the need to actually share an internet connection. You should be able to run the pineapple from the battery pack without anything connected to it. To test it you can log onto the "Pineapple" SSID, or whatever you've set it up to be, and type in a website into your browser. Assuming you have the DNS redirecting set up correctly, going to a specific website should redirect you to whatever internal website you have on your pineapple web server.

The Randomroll module works by editing the files for you to redirect ALL websites to the internal webserver and that definately works without an internet connection.

  3. Two points for you Tataboutlamin:

    1. You setup your Pineapple with an SSID of FREE WIFI and see who takes the bait. You can either Random Roll them, Phish them or MITM depending on if you decide to actually share an internet connection with whomever connects.

    2. You're only focusing on people who are specifically choosing which access point they want from a list... You're forgetting that the Pineapple takes advantage of automatic probe requests with Karma and peoples devices that are set to automatically connect. What you need to know is that in using Karma, or a set SSID in a certain location like a coffee shop, Power is the key factor. Your Pineapple is essentially broadcasting the same SSID as the other guy but peoples devices will attach to yours first because it sees a stronger signal. Their device chooses the better signal automatically. So try setting up the pineapple to have an SSID of "ulaval-wpa" and sit in an area where a lot of people use laptops. Just watch your Status page on the pineapple. After you've tried that turn on Karma as well to see how many more people get Randomrolled.

Yes, I love using Randomroll in an airport just because it's a target rich environment, but so is a Starbucks. I have no malicious intent, just having some harmless fun with people who are clueless about the technology they trust way to much. Also, I don't believe I'm doing anything illegal. I'm not forcing them to connect to my AP, they're doing it to themselves through ignorance. But please take Sebkinne's warning seriously. There are lots of nasty things you "could" do if you choose to. But you are ultimatley responsible for your actions.

  4. Take the one from the hak shop and cut the red wire on the connection going to the pineapple.

Is there a tutorial on how to do that... I'm kinda bummed because I just bought the powered USB hub from the Hakshop and it is backfeeding power to the pineapple.

I'm kind of curious if anyone has fed power to it via the barrel cable and plugged the powered hub in. Did it fry someones pineapple? I've read through a few post on the subject but didn't see that anywhere. Just advice not to do it...

  5. Before rolling back, I suggest you stick with 2.7.0 and reformat your USB drive. Follow the fstab update and mkswap inscturctions, then install your favorite infusions. As long as your pineapple is booting ok without the drive, this is probably the best option. I agree that you should use the provided power supply for these procedures instead of a battery pack.

(On a side note, I have an 8,000 mAh batter pack that powers the pineapple just fine. The USB drive I was using was an old 2Gig one I had laying around and it all worked well together. Then I bought an 8Gig SanDisk Cruzer for the low profile but it will not be powered by the pineapple when attached to the battery pack, with the power supply it does though. All of this happened with the new 2.7.0, so I know it's not a firmware issue. There are several other posts about this topic already though.)

  6. I'm glad you were able to verify that it does work. I don't believe anything about MAC ICS has changed so yes it's not as versatile. I believe the real key is the Network Manager infusions ability to do the second ICS on the pineapple itself. That is what bridges the two IP ranges. I suggest using a smartphone with wifi or a tablet to access the pineapple while your Air is otherwise engaged. And there should be no need to hard boot the pineapple. Turn off ICS and then plug into to LAN/POE port. That one should get you a DHCPd address from the pineapple and allow you to login and change settings. Just some ideas you might try.

  7. I'm new to the Pineapple but I love it so far. Just thought I'd share a process to get Internet Connection Sharing working in MAC OSX without having to make manual edits to the Pineapple as the Wiki states.

This requires the Network Manager infusion be installed.

Step 1: Connect MAC wifi to your Internet connected AP

Step 2: Ensure to "Set Service Order" under the Network preferences, put the Wifi above the Ethernet

Step 3: Also in Network prefs set the IP address of the Ethernet connection manually - 172.16.42.42, subnet is 255.255.255.0, router is blank, and DNS is 8.8.8.8

Step 4: Plug the cat5 cable into the WAN/LAN port on the pineapple

Step 5: Go to "Sharing" in System Prefs, in "Internet Sharing" set WiFi to Ethernet, check the box and hit start. ( this step will assign an IP address of 192.168.2.2 to the WAN/LAN port, this is visible on the pineapple's Status page. )

Step 6: In the network manager infusion go to the ICS tab, set Share Internet From eth1 to wlan0 (or br-lan in some instances) then click save.

The only thing unique with my setup is my Air doesn't have an NIC port so I'm using a USB to Ethernet adapter.

It should be obvious but I used a different device connected to the pineapple AP to make changes while my Air was in use. You could use a different laptop and connect to the LAN/POE port but an iPad or tablet with wifi works just fine.

Please let me know if this works for you. If it does maybe this can be added to the Wiki.

    Thanks,
