Now does anyone know if this is illegal/against the TOS:
You have an old pc with xp on it. You buy a new pc and decide that Linux is the way to go 90% of the time. You then format the old box, and put linux on it, because you don't need windows on this box. You then take your XP and put it on the new pc as a dual boot. Your still only using the one lisence, but on a different machine. I know MS recently added a bunch more crap for the OEM versions but nothing screams "illegal" in this situation.
-
slightly off topic, but this site has to be the daddy of port forwarding resources.
-
google? torrent? But anyway, your OLD pc has an XP lisence on it... product key et al...
-
muhahahaaa! ;-) Just grab a copy of XP and dual boot. You could also check out WINE, but not all games will be loving this...

I think the problem is the 20hr work stints on the computer... But i wonder which is worse for your health, WoW or smoking?

What do i need? the tarball, the RPM? Boy do i feel like total n00b atm...
Basically i need an always-on webserver, and the abillity to run Windows 2003 (its for learning, so i can get work and eat). But I only have this one box and an ancient compaq p2 laptop to play with (main machine and my other laptops are for work so i can't piss around with them).

Computers can do a lot of things, but is there anyway they could help me quit smoking? Something like an smoke detector that locks out the internet, or plays a klaxon everytime you spark up...

VaKo, have you gone mad? He's talking about FC5 (Fedora Core 5!).
nope, i'm stoned and i missed the fendora core bit... well... fuck knows what i thought... sorry, you can start the beating now...

Go with a plantronics then, i've seen them thrown at walls over and over again and they seem to work fine after that. (i worked on tech support for BT's I'm-a-dumb-shmuck broadband service)

<apparently smoking weed is bad for you... sorry>

Given that the "server" is a 950mhz AMD with 512mb ram, will it cripple the performance of win2003? Need that to learn about Active Directory and win2003 admin stuff.
Xen doesn't seem to support Win2003 without hardware VT, which I don't have...
-
If not just have them go threw the piles of paperwork that came with the machine. Somewhere in there is gonna be the legal XP key they paid for. Or call MS for a new key, which I *think* is around $10 or local. Sucks, i know... but its a solution.
-
I think the OEM versions (the ones that come from HP et all with your box) might be tied to specific BIOS/Mobo types (anyone want to confirm?), which is only a problem if you change the mobo.
The license of XP that MS issues is not tied to a particular CD, but if your XP disc came from a OEM providor they may have fucked with it. If that is the case, downloading a XP ISO (home, not pro..) will bypass this, and allow you to install XP with your mates key.
-
The VGA to CAT5 looks pretty funky. Cheers for that. Think this is gonna have to wait until I have my computers closer together.
-
The product key is probally the bulk installer one the PC maker used when it was built. Which if its a pre-SP2 one has probally been pirated up the wazoo and back by now.
By law they should have provided the key to the windows license they paid for with the computer. Which is in the documentation somewhere. Without a working key, your not going to be able to install windows on the box. But they key isn't tied to the disc itself, so as long as it accepts it, windows will boot. Windows update does have limited functionality with a compromised key.
Also, you sure you copied it down correctly? Try variations based on your hand wrighting?

sorry but i have too :P LINUX!
/me waves fist and splutters rage ;-)
You can grab a torrent (google it) or use nLite (again, google it) to make one yourself using your XP disc. Its gray area legal, as in MS probally won't like you doing it but its not gonna get you jail time.

[edit]
I misread your post sorry, is it that nothing will boot from the CD/DVD drive at all? Have you tried a linux LiveCD? Just to test that it can actually still boot?
[/edit]
Put in the XP disc again (if its the non-sp2 version, download a version with SP2 preloaded... its legal if you only use the XP licence the own already), do a new install. When it asks you where you want to put the OS, delete the partition, recreate it and then allow XP to reinstall on the recreated partition. Follow the install threw to the end, inputting the correct product key when asked. Don't reboot until windows asks you to.
If its still saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE etc" after that i'd try putting the disk in another XP machine and doing a full disk check, might be the HD itself is problamatic.
What was the origonal issue with the computer? Was there problems booting before or was it just full of gunk?

I have a spare PC thats currently running Win2003 as a headless box (using remote desktop to control it). What i'd like to be able to do is dual boot between Win2003 and *nix. But since this machine is headless i can't just run a boot manager and do it normally.
So, is there any type of boot manager than has a VNC (or similar) client? I'd like to be able to pipe monitor/kb/mouse to any computer on the LAN, but before either OS has loaded. (once the OS has loaded i can do VNC stuff normally). Possible or pipe dream?
The other option is a KVM switch and 10m of cables...

What type of thing are you looking for? A stereo headset you can listen to music on as well or a single ear piece one just for comms? Bluetooth or cabled?
Logitech do quite a few, but they all look a bit "hmmmm..." IMHO.
The Plantronics headset I own is really well built, but needs a bit of modding to work with 3.5mm jacks. But they also make standard computer stuff.

Boot Fedora Core and they will froget what the word virus means! I have been using linux for six months, I had one unrecovable crash. Windows in the past month crashed several times! If they must stick with Windows, I use AVG.What is it you people do that has windows crashing every 5 seconds? I've got a win2003 box that hasn't been rebooted in 2 months. As for my XP box, never had a problem with it, no viruses, no crashes, no BSOD's. So, how come Billy G gifted me with the only working copy of XP?
The day Linux gets a virus (don't say its impossible, because it isn't) I will probally have a heart attack from laughing so much.

Got any more info on that. As it is, i know i have to completly strip my PC down every 6 months or so and take a sable brush to all the bits, then hover the case out. Since i added dust filters it did help massively. But then i was doing this before I smoked...
