  1. 1: I've never seen a 24-port swith be a DHCP server. They just don't exist. I don't think eve the big Cisco 4000 6000 or 8000 seriese switches do DHCP.

There are some with L3 & DHCP its not exactly "cheap" (500 bucks or so).

If this is just for LAN gaming - go with the cheapest solution. 24port switch with one computer running a dhcp server free program.

If it is for a business - get a 2948 switch with layer 3, run DHCP off of the switch if cost is a factor.

  2. I am allergic to cigarettes i get th ebiggest headaches from being around it...

I know people if they smoked before they had this condition.. they would still smoke.

I would have to say the best way to quit... Is want to. Then after you want to you can do many different things to help you quit (I think I like the shock collar thing because they hurt) but that requires a lot of work.

Really, you just need a good reason for you to want to quit and then you will.. I am still waiting for that reason.

  3. you can check out wifiscanner.

It looks as if the signal strenght of the node you are trying to find will change as it gets stronger or weaker. Not exactly sure though.

Linux OS. You could try this with a VM session for XP not sure how well it woks that way.

Let us know if you get this working, seems like a good idea to be able to find a user on a wireless network for security reasons, e.g. someone wants to deauth or start running arp poisen attacks.

  4. No, what I want to know is how you would give each xen session it's own IP address, and prefrably it's own MAC address.

wouldnt this already be implied since each NIC has its own mac. You would then be required to statically assigned the unique IP?

  5. if you guys have a spare router (broadband one) sitting around, just throw it on the network as your dhcp server. Or do the free dhcp server that was suggested to set up IP's then turn it off since you can change the lease to however long you plan on having the party.

  6. Open Office is the shit, check it out

    I agree.

I cant believe how well they have done with a product that is free for general use.

Agreed. They just need to make it leaner - I'm not the only one that finds it bloated.

Right, I hear you.. but when you can work on document files or powerpoint files from work or school for free.. the problem with the program itself goes away when you walk up to a register for the student version of office proffesional and they say that will be 190 please. Or the regular office for 280 if you arent a student.

  7. Now does anyone know if this is illegal/against the TOS:

You have an old pc with xp on it. You buy a new pc and decide that Linux is the way to go 90% of the time. You then format the old box, and put linux on it, because you don't need windows on this box. You then take your XP and put it on the new pc as a dual boot. Your still only using the one lisence, but on a different machine. I know MS recently added a bunch more crap for the OEM versions but nothing screams "illegal" in this situation.

If you have a computer that has the sticker with the windows genuine code on it or the actual CD that has the authenticity code on it you are allowed to install that on one computer, and have it running on one computer only.

Ergo - You install xp(win95,98/2k) on machine A. Buy Machine B and decide screw XP on machine A I want it on Machine B. You can UNINSTALL your licensed copy and put it on Machine B. Run whatever else you want on MachineA.

So the TOS is adhered to by only running one copy of the licensed software. This is where Microsoft has been trying to crack down with the "Windows Genuine " update tool. To basically only allow one computer to use it at a time. We wont go into the fallacies they have on this one.

  8. I'm looking for some gaming grade headsets basicly, but they will probably be used for VoIP (out side games) aswell.

well i've had a lot of headsets , and the ozaki one's have lasted me the longest , also if u play older games don't go for a usb one (they tend to give some problems i used to have a expensive high end one with digital 7.1 sound but when using it with cs 1.6 at a certain moment it was like playing the sounds at double speed verry irritating)

the DSP 500 USB version works great for cs1.6 and CS:S from what my experience and what my friends tell me.

  9. Is port forwading enabled on the Airport?

    To expand on this -

What port do you want it to be? 80 or something else thats obscure?

I am not patronizing you but does the Dlink have port forwarding to the Airport? If so then do you have the port mapping defined on the Airport (Just like Mubix asked)?

If so then do it again from start to finish. You can check out this guide to help -

    http://www.gamesmith.biz/router.html#airport

    http://www.gamesmith.biz/router.html

and check this site to see if your port that you define is actually "Open" which is RED for bad.

    https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Go down to the bottom and click proceed if you agree to their terms. Then use the "Custom port probe" put in your port and click custom port probe again. If you FAILED - that means you are now live on the internet on that port. If you "Succeeded" then your machine didnt respond to the "request."

    Hope this helps.

  10. Anyway my question to everyone out there is what antivirus should I get them. I don't want them to continue to use Norton.

They don't want to use a free one like AVG or AntiVir so what antivirus does everyone here use............

Well its their box and their Money so you can only suggest.

A lot of good AV has been said besides what users think McAffe and Norton is. But you have to realize they must be able to use it and know what to do if something happens. So you show them the "best" but not known to the common user but they may feel uneasy.

So let them continue with what they think is the best, and if they get hit then suggest the better AV at that time. They will be more apt to listening at that point.

Dont forget to ensure they use a firewall if they dont already :-)

  11. I'm looking for a good statistics program for monitoring my server to keep an eye on the bandwidth, cpu load, memory usage,...

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    how in depth? Remote viewable?

Mrtg is a great way for bandwidth tracking on the network side (e.g. router switch vlans).

Prtg or Advanced Host monitor may be the cheapest tools you can get away with for good baselines. You can look at -a free utility is analog X (netstat live) that you can run on the computer but no logging :-(.

If you are looking for a VERY good SNMP monitor that doesnt break the bank you can look at the following - Whats up gold (if you can get it) or what they call Whats up Pro now. Or something else called Solar winds. Both products can continually monitor, alert based on thresholds, and give you statistics trending ect for a multitude of devices not just one server if thats your end goal.

I love my solarwinds for trending because it helps determine the average use of the CPU, trending for memory and bandwidth utilization through SNMP but it is costly... Not as much as HP openview or Ciscoworks. I also have a ton of devices I monitor.

    Hope this helps.

  12. I'm looking for some gaming grade headsets basicly, but they will probably be used for VoIP (out side games) aswell.

if its always connected to your PC - for gaming I love the plantronics DSP 500. Sits nicely for long durations. Very good microphone, one of the clearer ones you can get. Ive had mine for about 2 years now and havent looked back at the old headset and microphone set.

Wireless would be the next nice addition (bluetooth) for this device if they can get it to work well.

  13. Come on Faith +1.......do you have kids bro? Imagine that someone on the internet gave your son/daughters the tools needed to commit a crime, one that could damage his/her chances at getting into a college or receiving financial aid? Would you appreciate it? Would you still feel the same way as your posts suggests?

Have any of you thought that perhaps this protected drive is where teachers store tests and keep grade sheets? I'm not accusing scimech of cheating or altering his grades but just trying to get you guys to think a little. I know some of you have kids, would you still feel the same about giving this information if it was used against you or your kids? Maybe you guys are all uber-1337 and above being hacked....

I know I'll get a little flamage for this post but I don't care. I am just a big boy scout I guess. You know...the only thing that has stuck with me from my parochial school days is the Golden Rule.

Oh and Faith +1......I don't speed and I do my best not to break any laws. Oh and I use the word criminal in the same manner that lawyers do...to differeniate between civil and criminal things. Anything you do that is illegal is criminal. Just thought I would clarify since someone posted that they didn't know tresspassing was a criminal offense.

I hope scimech takes Vakko's advice and just asks the sysadmin why the drive is restricted. It may be easier to beg forgiveness rather than ask permission today, but what about tomorrow?

Not that it is any of your business but I do have a child. Heres the difference - Im not giving them the tools and or keys to attempt something. Just cautioning them if they choose to do it, to ensure as much as they can that they do not get caught. I dont know where I fall categorically where when I was told I cant do something, I did it anyway or I did my best to prove someone that I could do something. I do not believe I would be in the minority with my age group.

For you to say that you dont speed is naive, try your best not to break the law more believable. Not to mention you can get a ticket in California for impeding traffic which would mean if you are going the speed limit impeding the traffic you would be breaking the law as an officer may perceive it. The funny thing was - a friend of mine got a ticket for speeding, then another for impeding in the same day. He wasnt very happy that day.

Sorry to mistake Felony, Misdemeanor, and Criminal. Since I was meaning the severity of the crime not that a crime had been committed.

Asking would be the most direct way. Use a little bit of common sense when asking things. Dont just jump right in and ask exactly what you want. Do a bit of searching as to how the tech will respond, and always let them show you something. Build up a rapport with them and you can then go to them about any other questions you have.

  14. out of interest, do you need any firearms training to carry conceled weapons in Arizona?

Yes. There is a concealed weapons permitting class that you must go through in order to attain the permit. You dont even have to be an AZ resident to get it, because a lot of states allow the concealed weapons permit from AZ to be valid in their state due to a reciprocation agreement. Within this course you must have firearms training.
