  1. There are some with L3 & DHCP its not exactly "cheap" (500 bucks or so). If this is just for LAN gaming - go with the cheapest solution. 24port switch with one computer running a dhcp server free program. If it is for a business - get a 2948 switch with layer 3, run DHCP off of the switch if cost is a factor.
  2. you can check out wifiscanner. It looks as if the signal strenght of the node you are trying to find will change as it gets stronger or weaker. Not exactly sure though. Linux OS. You could try this with a VM session for XP not sure how well it woks that way. Let us know if you get this working, seems like a good idea to be able to find a user on a wireless network for security reasons, e.g. someone wants to deauth or start running arp poisen attacks.
  3. wouldnt this already be implied since each NIC has its own mac. You would then be required to statically assigned the unique IP?
  4. if you guys have a spare router (broadband one) sitting around, just throw it on the network as your dhcp server. Or do the free dhcp server that was suggested to set up IP's then turn it off since you can change the lease to however long you plan on having the party.
  5. I agree. I cant believe how well they have done with a product that is free for general use. Agreed. They just need to make it leaner - I'm not the only one that finds it bloated. Right, I hear you.. but when you can work on document files or powerpoint files from work or school for free.. the problem with the program itself goes away when you walk up to a register for the student version of office proffesional and they say that will be 190 please. Or the regular office for 280 if you arent a student.
  6. I think this is the obligatory - Xbox reply. I love booting my linux on my Xbox just to show people that something microsoft puts out is useful.
  7. I guess if your goal is to crack the wireless network for the challenge you could use some of the timelines above as guidence. But in factuality if you are using the wireless network to do things to other places you shouldnt be doing it to then you would just roll down the block till you find an open one wouldnt you?
  8. I agree. I cant believe how well they have done with a product that is free for general use.
  9. The history function. Sweetness. Go back to the page you want.. not the other crap.
  10. that one is freaking cool.
  11. Gotta love that :-) Ty for the info.
  12. http://images.southparkstudios.com/games/create/ Make your own and let us see :-)
  13. Thats a sweet *nix version of a monitor.
  14. It is :-) Best resource out there and its always done well for tutorials.. if... they had them. If they didnt, then you were kinda screwed and had to go to the manufacturers website to figure it out for your friend over the net :-p
  15. well i've had a lot of headsets , and the ozaki one's have lasted me the longest , also if u play older games don't go for a usb one (they tend to give some problems i used to have a expensive high end one with digital 7.1 sound but when using it with cs 1.6 at a certain moment it was like playing the sounds at double speed verry irritating) the DSP 500 USB version works great for cs1.6 and CS:S from what my experience and what my friends tell me.
  16. To expand on this - What port do you want it to be? 80 or something else thats obscure? I am not patronizing you but does the Dlink have port forwarding to the Airport? If so then do you have the port mapping defined on the Airport (Just like Mubix asked)? If so then do it again from start to finish. You can check out this guide to help - http://www.gamesmith.biz/router.html#airport http://www.gamesmith.biz/router.html and check this site to see if your port that you define is actually "Open" which is RED for bad. https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 Go down to the bottom and click proceed if you agree to their terms. Then use the "Custom port probe" put in your port and click custom port probe again. If you FAILED - that means you are now live on the internet on that port. If you "Succeeded" then your machine didnt respond to the "request." Hope this helps.
  17. Hawaiian for thank you.
  18. Well its their box and their Money so you can only suggest. A lot of good AV has been said besides what users think McAffe and Norton is. But you have to realize they must be able to use it and know what to do if something happens. So you show them the "best" but not known to the common user but they may feel uneasy. So let them continue with what they think is the best, and if they get hit then suggest the better AV at that time. They will be more apt to listening at that point. Dont forget to ensure they use a firewall if they dont already :-)
  19. how in depth? Remote viewable? Mrtg is a great way for bandwidth tracking on the network side (e.g. router switch vlans). Prtg or Advanced Host monitor may be the cheapest tools you can get away with for good baselines. You can look at -a free utility is analog X (netstat live) that you can run on the computer but no logging :-(. If you are looking for a VERY good SNMP monitor that doesnt break the bank you can look at the following - Whats up gold (if you can get it) or what they call Whats up Pro now. Or something else called Solar winds. Both products can continually monitor, alert based on thresholds, and give you statistics trending ect for a multitude of devices not just one server if thats your end goal. I love my solarwinds for trending because it helps determine the average use of the CPU, trending for memory and bandwidth utilization through SNMP but it is costly... Not as much as HP openview or Ciscoworks. I also have a ton of devices I monitor. Hope this helps.
  20. if its always connected to your PC - for gaming I love the plantronics DSP 500. Sits nicely for long durations. Very good microphone, one of the clearer ones you can get. Ive had mine for about 2 years now and havent looked back at the old headset and microphone set. Wireless would be the next nice addition (bluetooth) for this device if they can get it to work well.
  21. Not that it is any of your business but I do have a child. Heres the difference - Im not giving them the tools and or keys to attempt something. Just cautioning them if they choose to do it, to ensure as much as they can that they do not get caught. I dont know where I fall categorically where when I was told I cant do something, I did it anyway or I did my best to prove someone that I could do something. I do not believe I would be in the minority with my age group. For you to say that you dont speed is naive, try your best not to break the law more believable. Not to mention you can get a ticket in California for impeding traffic which would mean if you are going the speed limit impeding the traffic you would be breaking the law as an officer may perceive it. The funny thing was - a friend of mine got a ticket for speeding, then another for impeding in the same day. He wasnt very happy that day. Sorry to mistake Felony, Misdemeanor, and Criminal. Since I was meaning the severity of the crime not that a crime had been committed. Asking would be the most direct way. Use a little bit of common sense when asking things. Dont just jump right in and ask exactly what you want. Do a bit of searching as to how the tech will respond, and always let them show you something. Build up a rapport with them and you can then go to them about any other questions you have.
  22. Good article. Nice to know snort is still doing okay for detection.
  23. Yes. There is a concealed weapons permitting class that you must go through in order to attain the permit. You dont even have to be an AZ resident to get it, because a lot of states allow the concealed weapons permit from AZ to be valid in their state due to a reciprocation agreement. Within this course you must have firearms training.
  24. Now what kind of school? If you are a minor you are not afforded the rights of a jury of your peers but appeals are allowed I believe? Unless charged as an adult I guess the word "Peers" are the 18 year olds if you are younger than that. If it can be proven that you broke into an area of the school in which you werent supposed to be, or that your intent was to break into an area in which you arent supposed to be knowingly then the natural course of action is to contact the local authorities, not give the kid a detention. Why would it be different for the computer systems? If you attempt to break into a computer system you know you arent supposed to be in, or circumvent policies and or procedures why is that not also a similar offense? Especially if they can prove you did it? My state is pretty vague on the interpretations of it all, however they blanket the whole access by stating "Any unauthorized access attempt" which pretty much means anything that you werent explicitly allowed access for is against that law. To the point about telling "Impressionable youth" that its not a good Idea unless you cant get caught. Lets be realistic. When you were young and told what you CANT do, what did you most likely do? You did it, even though you were told not to. So lets not candy coat the reality. The reality is that if you are going to speed, do it where you know the police arent. If you are going to do something (no matter what anyone tells you) then maybe you should ensure you wont get caught doing the deed. I didnt know trespassing was a criminal offense, I always thought it was a misdemeanor, but I dont trespass so its something I dont keep up on.
  25. I apologize there is no way for me to try to pretend Im keeping this on topic as Digital Arcanist and I have sort of tried doing. Used my guns to kill or main another human - never. How many times do I want to use it in that circumstance never if I can help it. Why - because as DA was pointing out in a lot of US States you can not use deadly force as a last resort no matter what. In Arizona you may if you are in imminent danger of someone unlawfully using deadly force against you. But I caution you, that doesnt mean that just because you pull a gun out at me I can shoot you dead to rights. I have to know that your intent is to kill me with that weapon and or another weapon in which I may lawfully stop your unlawful behavior of trying to kill me. Hopefully you could follow that. What would make me take someones life? The idea of Kill or be killed comes to mind. Thats it, not out of a fit or rage or some other emotion except self preservation for myself or my family. Guns require respect. A lot more than most people give them. To understand the tool, you must first treat it with respect for the power within without abusing and or using that power incorrectly. Lastly - can I look someone in the eye and unload a round? Tough one. I guess the answer I have is - If necessary I hope so.
