  1. Looks promising there is even a Ubuntu build for it. And theoretically any bootable flash drive should work from what i read on hackaday.com :) and as for a cheap tablet pc how cheap can you find them? cheapest i see is 300$?

EDIT: Also where can you buy a Clarion MiND? no one online or instore seems to carry it? at least in canada that is. Ill check amazon but the links i found were dead

    ebay

  2. Clarion MiND can be had for under $100 used, and under $200 new.

If you want to run Backtrack, its doable (not sure if anyone has tired) . Stick with x86 if you want support.

That or pick up a cheap used tablet PC and just replace the Windows XP install.

  3. Hope it goes well, I don't think I'll make it to your talk but I'll be at the con.

To be fair I might make it, if it does not conflict with:

OUR INSTRUMENTED LIVES: SENSORS, SENSORS, EVERYWHERE...

    BREAKING BLUETOOTH BY BEING BORED

    DCFLUX IN: MOON-BOUNCER

    EXTREME-RANGE RFID TRACKING

BUILD YOUR OWN UAV 2.0 - WIRELESS MAYHEM FROM THE HEAVENS!

  4. You can install kismet-drone on a Fon, so you would need 4 Fons and 4 really long ethernet cables.

Those Open Mesh routers are cheap enough. Nice thing about Linksys slugs and GuruPlus is you can have more than one wireless card. One in monitor mode the other for connecting.

  5. thank you for your speedy responce metatron.kismet would be my software of choice, but what cheap hardware could i run this on? As running it on four computers would be an over kill.

An old Linksys NSLU2 with a USB wireless card or a GuruPlug would do it. Kismet drones via WRT54GL would also work but they tend to cost a lot for really old equipment.

  6. Any particularly cheap places you'd recommend to get this thing from?

Looks like something that could be worth playing around with.

There fairly hard to find out side of the US and Canada. With the EU having the restriction of hazardous substances directive means lead-based solder is a big no, no if you want to sell anything.

  7. Is there any age limit ?

I am 16 am I allowed to go :/ ...I always wanted to.

Well they don't really care how old with you are, the only issue i could see would be getting a hotel room if you don't have a credit card. The casinos tend to not like anyone under 21 but I don't think you would have any issues if you came with an older brother or sister, or parents.

  8. I was reading their forums it looks like RollerCon is on the same time as Defcon so the evenings should be interesting. Also is anyone going to Eth0?

    http://eth-0.nl/

eth0 is an outdoor computer event intended to bring people with differing computer-related interests and skills together for an informative and fun time.

"eth0:2010 summer" will be held from the 10th of August up to and including the 13th of August 2010.

As normal with these events (eth0 / WTH / HAR) the campsite is situated at a remote heavily forested area. This year, like in 2008 we have chosen for "Het Boshuis" near Wieringerwerf, NL allowing us to enjoy our hacky ways like nowhere else.

  9. Sorry, can I just point out that Northern Ireland has been able to support itself financially for a while now, Scotland has been able to support itself for the past 5 years and Wales is nearly there.

But that does offer hope for the UK. Scotland has had a hung parliament for years, and this have been getting better and better.

lol, I've been to Northern Ireland, the only thing they have are some farms and lots of shops and it seems unemployment is quite high, so I can't see how they could support themselves if they were cut off. As for Scotland, well you have farming, some manufacturing (its dieing off everywhere in the western world) and limited oil reserves that are maybe good for another 10 to 20 years. Whales has farming and manufacturing and that's about it.

Unemployment and low wages is fairly bad everywhere outside of the south of England and all the money making industries are located in the south. I think areas should be allotted the money they make and let the under preforming parts of the UK die off or make them do better.

  10. Programs are written in C/C++ with an online compiler - this means whatever flavour of machine/os you use (Windows, Linux, Mac) you'll always have the latest version of the software on your desktop without any installation worries.

This may be me having a bit of a blonde moment but do they still offer you the tools to do everything locally or are they using some proprietary system that builds everything on their servers via a web interface?. Its ARM based so it should be fairly open but I don't like the idea of them getting a copy of any code I were to write.

  11. Those things are junk.

The Zaurus is a grade A piece of shit, the only issue with the Nokia tablets is they have a flaky USB host mode. Really PCMCIA support really would make a good device as you can have a nice wireless card and DECT sniffing on one device.

  12. i found this link WiFi and Bluetooth sniffer with gps built in ^_^ sounds like what your looking for.

lol, I saw that on hack a day a few days back, its so badly done. There has been countless other wifi gun projects in the last 12 year which don't look like a five year old got set loss with a glue gun.

  13. I was thinking of starting to put together a paintball sentry gun, but i dont no any coding and was wondering would it be possible to run it all off a microcontroller?

this is the website i got the project from, here

    Thanks for reading.

    John

Triggering something is easy but if you want target tracking that's fairly intensive, you would need something fairly fast. If you want easy, just build a laser trigger and have the gun just pan left to right.

  14. Netstumbler lets you bundle it with a GPS to get an "approximate" location of an access point, but its not going to give you anything other than your general location when finding the access point. There isnt any GPS device I know of that alone has the capabilities to scan wireless networks. Thats not what a GPS does. Not saying you couldn't combine it with something, like Kismet or Netstumbler or other such software, but as a device, a GPS only talks to satellites, not wireless access points.

As far as open ports, you would need something in addtion to the other two I mentioned, like nmap or other portscanner but nmap works by having internet access, and if you arent associated with the access point or able to get to it via the internet/wan/lan, then you cant scan the access point for open ports.

GPS modules spit out serial data and you can get serial based wireless cards, add a DOSonCHIP FAT16/FAT32 module for data logging, a MCU and a handful of other components and you have a fairly small cheapish, easy to put together unit. I would also add a 16x4 lcd to display lock, last hit and such.
