  1. I had my ipod plugged into a higher priority slot...... thats what gave me weird characters.

    EDIT:

so i redid the whole thing. and now i should have gparted on there and working. my menu.lst file contains this code

    timeout 120

    title GParted 0.7.0-4
    kernel /live/vmlinuz1 boot=live union=aufs noswap vga=791 ip=frommedia nolocales
    initrd /live/initrd1.img

the files in my 1GB usb are grldr as well as menu.lst and live and boot from Gparted.

when i booted into it, it came up with a screen that says:

    Grub4dos 0.4.4 2009-03-31, Memory 640K / 502M menu end: 0x4830c

below that in a box i have four options:

    find /menu.lst, /boot/grub/menu.lst, /grub/menu.lst

    command line

    reboot

    halt

first two take me to grub prompts next two are self explanatory.

so... not sure what the next move is or why its not working.

  2. so i made a splashscreen and i have it at the top of my menu.lst files. i have the color code and timeout that Darren used.

when i try to boot from it it gives me a couple very strange set of characters.

i would think even without a reference to a OS and no OS files on it that i would get a menu to display.... maybe the grub is messed up?

  3. So, i started checking this out lately, and i dont even know how i got onto it, i think it was mentioned over on hackthissite.org

i was immediately thrilled with the idea of having a multipass! and ive done a bit of looking around but have a question about it....

how large are the files once on the multi pass? for instance, if i were to put ubuntu 10.10 on a flash drive, would it take up as much room as the ISO file does, or the OS once its installed? it seems like you would need a lot more space if it was as much as the installation size of the OS. also these boot like a live cd correct? can save anything on the OS's on it?

i have a 4GB flash drive and am wondering if it will be enough for what i would like to do, which is a couple distro's and tools.

    Thanks!

  4. i know two ways actually to do it. simple yet effective actually...

simple research should find them, but heres one.

use team viewer. i havent tried it yet, but i would assume just go ahead and boot it up onto your computer at home, write down the pass codes, go to school with it downloaded on a flash drive plug it in and then go ahead and launch it. run it. access your home computer.

the other one i saw on youtube and some searching should bring it up.

  5. its not 15 minutes every 15 minutes for 5 years.....

if you knew anything about hacking you would know its a triple 15.

15 mintues. every 15 mintues. for 15 years. get it right okiwan. the billboard made that very clear! :D

  6. so i was installing gentoo yesterday. everything was going great!

the only thing was, when it was time to unmount my file system and reboot, it didnt reboot to gentoo, instead, it sent me to some grub prompts. so, i am able to bypass the grub prompts by specifying my kernel. i do this with:

    root (hd0,2)
    kernel /boot/ {hit tab here}
    kernel /boot/kernel*
    boot

the hit tab here is what i do, it list's the kernel. the kernel* is the kernel then version number....

so after that i am able to bypass that and get into my system. but it boots into my changes not saves them. so i still have to fix my problem whatever it is. i looked and under grub.conf the kernel referenced sda instead of hda, so i tried to edit that to hda, and no success.

i then tried to chroot back into my system with the disc. i was able to. and i typed in grub and tried to do the same thing there as i did at startup to bypass it, and then type exit, and reboot. no luck.

so changing where the grub.conf referenced the kernel didnt change it, and going to the grub prompts in the system and typing the same thing to bypass it didnt change it, so im not sure....

    i also tried the

    root (hd0,0)

    setup (hd0)

    quit

command set when chrooted into my system and it didnt work. i tried those three things many diffrent times in slightly diffrent ways... referencing diffrent things. still, no luck.

so under grub.conf i still have it listed as hda instead of the default sda, and i can always change that.

    hda1=boot

    hda2=swap

    hda3=system

someone said they were missing a file in grub, but i have that file. so i dont think thats the problem. but im not sure what would be. is there a way to delete the grub and redo it, or does someone see the problem? i have never installed gentoo before.

    Thanks

As far a piracy, you shouldn't be upset I mentioned it was an option as you legally paid for your copy right? So you didn't steal anything from them now did you.

Calm it buddy, Just trying to help

i do have to agree, if you paid for it, and had to reinstall it, and due to THERE faults, it wont work, then i dont see a huge problem with cracking it. now if they end up fixing your problem with a new copy like you might get, good. but if not, then the way i look at it is, your not at fault they are. if your not pirating it, it shouldn't be a huge problem.

but these are the kind of reasons i run linux. you have to reinstall and you cant because there codes got black listed and they wont help you out with there problems. now you have to re-buy something you already purchased.

  8. 10.10 Review

so, i eagerly awaited 10.10 i kept coming back to the page to check it. within twelve minutes of the release i started downloading the ISO file. it was small which was nice, only 690 something MB. i enjoyed fast download times, even playing Xbox live.

ISO was downloaded and i burned it to a disc. rebooted, and ran the disc. i was doing a fresh install. took a couple seconds to get the cd to boot. but wasn't extremely long. once it was there i was surprised. very nice new change to the graphical installation. two options in the beginning, and they weren't listed like they use to be. you had a application box, where you could choose either to try ubuntu in a live cd or to install. also liked the new addition of the panel at the top for shutting down, and sound control.

very easy and simple graphical install. they made it very nice. and after few routine questions it started installing. when creating your account, they moved the default option from being automatically login to prompt for password which was good. seemed to be a very fast install. very good use of system resources, pulling from Internet and disc. didnt seem to take long at all. i actually just sat through the whole thing. within 2 hours and 27 minutes of it being released, i had it fully installed, within 2 hours and 28 minutes, i had it booted into the system. my home folder also being encrypted. im not sure but i think that was a new feature. maybe had it in 10.04

booting into the system was nice. they got rid of that ugly help button next to firefox on the top panel. they also integrated the sound control with rythmbox. very nice.

    Now for performance......

Best i have ever had with ubuntu. i dont know if it was the OS or my computer but before, i could never run the update manager or the ubuntu software center with other applications as it completely bogged down my system. it was to the point where i would have to force quite apps. i immediately checked for updates and there was two. downloaded them at the same time as i ripped music to my rythmbox, downloaded python, got on the Internet, AND installed compiz manager and lucky backup from the software center. didnt even slow it down one bit. and please note, i only have 512 MB of RAM. like i said, at first i thought it was hardware related.... but with this, i now think it was the OS itself. either way, i got an amazing increase in performance with this.

After getting some plugings installed, everything worked nicely, video and sound. got my programs downloaded without a problem and all my files moved over. so far, Great!

i love the upgrade to 10.10 very worth it. i give it a 10 out of 10!

  9. yes and to you as well. i am 16 at the moment. but after high school i really want to do this. i will either take some community college courses or go to college for a couple years im not sure. and then i will do it.

im also looking into website building. and programming. so if i can learn those it would be a plus. thats why i was wondering if companys contracted other companys to do there networking or paid employees.

  10. computer networking mainly for bigger business's. as well as software deployment. and system administration.

and for small business's and homes, network setup, as well as virus removal and maintenance and all that good stuff. and troubleshooting and fixing problems of all kind. also, desktop building. i think i will want to do that to. build gaming rigs people can use.

  11. nope. but wouldnt re imaging it remove everything on it? or maybe we arent thinking about the same thing?

i think whover was taking care of the computers before i was computer savvy in anyway, basically took them. we dont use him anymore. but my dads vista disc's and my moms XP stuff is gone. we dont have much of any of it. which is to bad. all i got is some software suits.

  12. BAN HIM!

he is on hackthissite.org as well. posting the same thing again and again. seriously, someone do it. its someone who thinks this hak5 and hackthissite is all about "hacking" and ruining networks and virus's and stuff. and im betting is just doing this to annoy people or its a bot.

    but honestly....

    .....BAN

  13. well, the programs they have on there are ones that they paid for. so i could do it all manually. remove virus's, delete files, remove programs, and try to set Internet settings back to default. but didnt know if there was a quicker way. we dont have another xp OS disc either. so couldnt blast it and redo it anyway.

  14. ok, lets all start off with me saying, i hate windows....

i have really kinda grown to hate it since i have started using linux... its just sorta a pain and a hassle.

although, i have to use it with the career im going to be using :D

so i come to you all with a question about system recovery.

i have never had good luck with this tool. it has always been a pain to use. i backed my dads computer up a day or two and it failed each time i tried to do so. but one of his drivers for his printers, after said system restore kept saying it wasnt installed anymore. then my uncle did it on his computer and it crashed it, he had to use a system recovery disc he bought. (actually, i had to use it.....)

so anyway, with bad luck and all, i dont really know how the program works...

so here is my scenario, my mom and dad worked together, my mom did secretary stuff for my dad's business. now, my mom doesnt need to do work for him. so her computer has files and stuff from the work she did. and her wireless internet was locked so that it would stay connected to one network only so it would interface with printers and stuff, i dont know.. they had compute guys come in and set stuff up for them, and they kinda made the whole thing a mess.

so what i want to do is set the computer completely back to its original factory settings. as if they just bought it. the few files she wanted i backed up onto a flash drive. but, the problem is, is she has outlook and some other programs on here that she wants. including word and what not. and her computer has had virus's and trojans in the past, so rather than dealing with that, i would rather it be wiped.

so what im kinda hoping is that a system restore to original settings will delete all files not originally on the computer but keep the programs. so it would be like buying the computer brand new with programs. but i want all the outlook files kept as well as the programs.

so do i go the long way and uninstall all programs i dont want as well as manually delete files, or what exactly would a system restore do? (assuming it would work.....)

EDIT: also, i want all the networking settings returned to normal again as well.... and all program settings to default...

SUPER EDIT: its running XP home edition. and is a compaq laptop.

    Thanks

    Kolton K

  15. shiplit sends copy's of ubuntu for free, or we could download them on to disc's ourself. but that would cost some money so i hope donations would work.

and yeah, ubuntu and fedora are good starting OS's.

  16. Nice. and it turns out, that OSU, the university close to me, does have a very active LUG. they just dont update there website. a alumni that i know told me there active. so i joined there mailing list and they have some events coming up in October. so i will go to that and look at it and see what i think. hopefully i can bring some new ideas to the table. so if this works out i wont need to start one. but it was good to know if they lasted or not.

also, are any of you sponsored by system76? what do you do with new members that are interested? i was thinking a wubi install of ubuntu to get them to try it. then if they like it, a full install. but do you hand out disc's or have one install disc everyone uses?

  17. so, white and nerdy, you have had good experiences and it worked out, but okiwan it didnt last?

yeah, online doesnt seem to work out to much. seems like the only thing it works for is like, writing a kernel or something......

so what did you do white and nerdy to get people that are linux users to come? how do you locate them?

  18. okay, so i was checking out the LUG's on linux.org, they had some listed close to my area, but not in my town, and not only that, most of the nearby ones are inactive.

i think it would be cool to start and not only that, help move linux forward and get new users. system 76 supports LUG's with flyers and stickers and what not, and i think organises some events.

so i was wondering if any of you on here have ever started or been apart of a LUG? did they seem to be beneficial? also, how well did they work out? like i said, the ones around me are mostly inactive.... do they not last long/run out of hype, or simply did the ones around here maybe not have enough dedicated members?

thats the other thing, i use linux, i have a friend at school that use's linux, and besides that..... nobody. what would be the best course of action to find linux users in my area? i mean there have to be more, i simply dont know how to locate them...

i was thinking flyers at my local library. nerds hang out there ;-D

as for a meeting space, i was also thinking my local library, they have a nice big meeting room, and we may be able to reserve it annually. they have free wifi, and possibly we could get ethernet in there. i have some switches to spread it.

i know a LUG would have helped me, although, i am a very self taught person. but it would have been nice to walk in somewhere, get handed a copy of ubuntu, and help installing it, as well as info about it and open source and answers to my questions. shiplit sends free copy's of ubuntu CD's out, very nice ones to, or we could make our own, bundled with stickers from system76, like the OS one and keyboard logo ones. that would be a cool started kit i think. and we could except donations for the stuff if they like it so we could donate some money back to shiplit for the CD's.

as for a website, im no expert, but $10-$20 for a domain each year and using our internet provider as the host, i could probably build a nice website with a free wysiswyg website builder or just use HTML, i know my basics in it. i think that is all you need, the site code, the host and the domain. domain is all i would be paying for.

so with a website for people to go to and to stay in touch, as well as a meeting space, and flyers to get the word out, i think i could put it together. but suggestions or ideas? do LUG's usually work or even last? have they been beneficial? ideas on how to attract linux users to the LUG and get the word out?

Thanks for reading the long post and for any feedback or thoughts!
