  1. I currently operate the Alfa AWUS036H 2Ghz adapter. Does anyone have any recommedations for a newer modem for BackTrack PenTesting which has both bands 2 & 5Ghz? What should I look for as fas as specs?
  2. I have a network rack that has round holes which are used to mount the hardware into the rack. Does anyone know what the hardware is called or where it can be found for a rack with ROUND holes vs. the square found on most racks. I have resorted to using nuts and bolts.
  3. I am playing with Python 2 and developing a few scripts and I have seemed to have hit a wall with the following: Is it possible to have a python script run in the background on Windows and if an event occurs pop up a notification on the desktop? Anyone know how to do this? Also, is it possible to send an email from a script in response to an event in a python script?
  4. With no prior ROOTing experience I am interested in ROOTing a new Android Samsung Exhibit II cell phone with a few questions: #1 What concerns should I have if any performing such a task? #2 Are there safe sources for software to ROOT my phone? #3 I would imagine that there must be some malware infected ROOTing software out there what should I watch out for? Any other advise would be appreciated.
  5. Hmm. I saw a guy on YouTube using a Nokia N900 Smartphone to scan for WIFI and Bluetooth via Linux I believe. Do you have any opinions on this unit? And I am wondering if I would be able to operate the Linux or OS on this phone without having service to it.
  6. Anyone have any recommendations for a portable handheld (around pocket size) device that I can install Linux (BackTrack5) on that has built in: Bluetooth WIFI (promiscuous mode capable) Built in keyboard Prefer a non cell phone unit. Any ideas?
  7. The Surveillance system is a stand alone unit which I think may be running Linux. It connects to the LAN via RJ45 and through the menu system and only seems to offer alarm triggered snapshots via email. I do not want to transmit out of the LAN any photos through the WAN/ISP to my email servers outside the LAN only to return to the LAN. I want to keep the Surveillance system isolated on the LAN with no access to the WAN and be able to host a email server on a local machine that would receive the Surveillance emails which I could later access via email client.
  8. I am looking for an SMTP server so that email sent on the LAN via the Surveillance System can be received by a Windows 7 box without the emails (pictures) being sent out in the wild WAN. Any ideas/recommendations?
  9. I am currently working on the audio side of my surveillance system and would like to add on a panel that would show meters indicating the audio levels of each microphone with the possibility of having a system where when the audio level goes above a set threshold a light/led would light in a panel. I will need at least 8 indicators and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to if there is already a unit like this out there or would I have to build this out?
  10. Good idea. I have zero experience with antenna's, would you have any recommendations for a YAGI WIFI antenna? Seemed like the initial one I was looking at had a USB WIFI built on to it, I really would prefer being able to hook up the new antenna to my Alfa.
  11. Anyone out here have experience with this antenna and if so how would you rate it? NextG USB-Yagi Plug & Play 11N Long Range WiFi antenna 2200mW http://www.amazon.com/NextG-USB-Yagi-Range-antenna-2200mW/dp/B0044D7J1W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311916794&sr=8-1
  12. I know Windows Media Center has command line options to start items directly such as go directly to videos or TV however, I can't seem to locate information on how to set up Windows Media Center so that when it is started it goes directly to the Netflix application. Anyone know how to do this?
  13. I have been using MS Visio to design/map Computer, Surveillance & Audio Video systems for a while now and wonder is there a better way or software that I could use for this? I would like to have something that would update links/changes on multiple pages without having to do this manually. Any ideas/recommendations?
  14. OK, thanks for the tips. I will most likely try this card or one similar and if I have trouble I guess I can just leave my original card in or buy a matching new one.
  15. I looked up the Sapphire HD5770 and discovered the: "SAPPHIRE 100338L Radeon HD 6770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card" is it safe to say that the 6770 would be better than the 5770? Is 1GB memory sufficient for dual DVI 24" Monitors and the 46" HDMI TV?
  16. Yup, I had initially attempted to obtain new drivers from ASUS and then again from Intel when the problem continued. I have another system to build and when I get around it I will boot this system from Linux to see if the trouble persists there. And I will post findings should anyone search for this specific problem.
  17. Should anyone else encounter this problem with this hardware, the issue was resolved this way. Deleting both the Intel and RealTek NICS via Device manager including all associated software. Deleting ALL Intel software via Control Panel/Programs (2 Packages) "Intel Network Connections" & "Intel Management Engine Components". The later requiring a reboot. Re-Install RealTek NIC driver via ASUS DVD. Using the RealTek NIC port after a restart both Internet and LAN connections operate as they should without delay. I don't know if the Intel NIC port on the board is bad or if the associated software caused a conflict or not.
  18. I would like to see under $60USD, but would consider higher if there is a good reason. I mostly use the machine for basic stuff, but would like to run XBMC for the TV while still doing other stuff on the 2 DVI monitors (VM's, Excel, Email & WWW). I don't think I need anything fancy, what do you think?
  19. Is the ASUS P8P67 Deluxe considered to be a crappy board?
  20. Anyone have any suggestions? I currently have a Sapphire X1650PRO video card with dual DVI connections and I am looking to add an additional video card so that I can run a 3rd monitor (46" LCD TV) for videos and such, I would need to use HDMI to connect. I would want to be able to do high res videos 1080p. Any suggestions on what to look for? This is not for a gaming machine.
  21. This upgrade was supposed to be fun, but after a bunch of problems the fizzle is almost gone. I decided to try to use the 2nd built in to the MB NIC, now when downloading from the net via Firefox the download completes without user interaction. And the Home Network in the Network Sharing area does not flash in and out however, the ability to send any file over the LAN fails miserably. I can find any computer on the LAN, drill down into the directory but when I copy a file over it will eventually show on the other system but will get stuck on mine, and the file even though it shows the correct size will be corrupt. I have completely disabled the Windows firewall on all three sections to no avail. I even dropped back to a fresh install without any additional software (including from the ASUS DVD) which had ALL updates applied to the OS, the problem is there too. So it does not appear to be something I did from the fresh install until the active install with preferred settings and other software. I have installed WIN 7 Ultimate 64 & 32bit dozens of times without ever encountering this issue. I think I will have to pop in another NIC card and see how that works, right now I suspect the ASUS MB NICS. Kinda strange though. I even re-entered the Router Firewall rules for both MB NICS. So far it seems I can rule out my Router, WIN Firewall, Additional software and settings.
  22. After a new build with an ASUS P8P67 Deluxe and an Intel i7 2600K with Windows Ultimate 64bit I am encountering a connectivity issue with one of the on board MB NICS. I can access the internet without issue. When I download a file via Firefox I noticed that the download will hang, pressing pause and then start on each download will continue the download without issue. When attempting to connect to other computers on the LAN I noticed that while in the Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center that the active home network will disappear momentarily and return and then re-identify itself to the router. When attempting to paste a file to another computer over the LAN it gets completely stuck and will not complete the transmission. I checked if I could access other LAN computers all have the same effect. I can use other computers on the LAN to send/receive to other LAN computer without error. When I log on to the new system and just basic WWW or Windows Update I experience no issues. I have updated the MB and other MB items including the 2 on board NICS with both software on DVD and at the manufacturers website, the error continues. When in the Intel 82579V connection properties and running diagnostics it returns the following: CONNECTION: This connection obtained an IP address from a DHCP server. No WINS server is available for this connection Ping Gateway 192.168.1.100: Failed Ping DHCP 192.168.1.100: Failed Ping DNS 192.168.1.100: Failed Link speed: 100Mbps. The link partner is not capable of higher speeds. CABLE: Polarity : Normal HARDWARE: EEPROM Test : Passed FIFO Test : Passed Register Test : Passed Loopback Test(s) : Passed I can't seem to identify the issue, any ideas?
  23. After a short bit of online research and further playing with XBMC software for Windows I think I have swayed towards XBMC vs. Windows Media Center although I also will continue to use Hulu Desktop and should be able to integrate it into XBMC. I felt initially that XBMC was unsupported after installing several plugins that when run did not work. Anyone who has installed Drupal (Content Management) or PFSense (Firewall/Router) will feel in a similar environment related to installing plug-ins and tweaking text files. Here is a few likes for XBMC After it scans your audio and video files it imports from the net associated CD/DVD cover media including detailed descriptions of movies that include directors and actors (With Photos!). You can pull up a list of actors and when selected it will show all your movies with them in it. Fanart can be included in audio which will go out and show pictures of singers and or bands when the song is being played (Fun with a large media collection). The interface is skin-able however, not all skins offer in depth information on the system and or files. Some skins lack basic functions. The Weather information can be updated to show background pictures that relate to the weather in your location and can be updated with animated icons showing weather activity. The ability to set user profiles and passwords (good for the kids). With further exploration I think I should be able to integrate Hulu and possibly netflix and also other audio/video sources on the net. I am running this on a laptop and 46" LCD now but I will go an purchase a tower system soon and move it into the living room. P.S. Tips on Tweaks for XBMC are welcome.
  24. I am working on building a media center PC and I am currently reviewing software for it such as: XMBC, MS Media Center & Boxee. Although I do like XMBC it does not seem to be supported very well and allot of the plugins just don't work. MS Media Center does not seem to do a very good job of indexing Audio with pictures very well and the live TV is a feature I would like however, it does not seem that I can eliminate CLIPS of shows and only show FULL shows. Boxee if I am correct is built on XBMC and sometimes crashes. What I am looking to do is have hopefully a single piece of software that would index my local Audio/Video and show related CD or DVD cover pictures, be able to see podcasts live and archived and also have the ability to show regular big media shows on the networks. Additionally I am hoping to also have Netflix and Hulu+ built in. One other thing I would like is if the application does not have a plugin or application for a media source I would like I need a way to add it in. Does anyone have suggestions on how to build a system that could do all that with one software application vs. jumping from MS Media Center for Netflix, Hulu Desktop and then XBMC. Is there a best of all worlds? I am not concerned if it is MS or Linux based.
