  1. Hey guys,

I have an Ubuntu box that is connected to 2 different networks thru wlan0 and eth0. I was looking for a way to automatically forward a specific port thru wlan0.

                 eth0 ( 10.13.37.0 )
                /
    linux_box ->
                \
                 wlan0 ( 192.168.1.0 ) port x goes thru here. (i.e. port 80)

I googled the subject and found you need to use IP tables.

    I found ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=159661 and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo )

but I still don't quite understand these commands. I was wondering if someone would be able to give me a template for what I need and/or point me in the right direction if iptables is not the way to go.

    thank you in advance,

    Phil

  2. If you wanted something cheaper but similar specs(only AMD, not Intel) try http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153155R&cm_re=jetway-_-13-153-155R-_-Product

Digip, for me it was that it had multiple NICs and processor already built in. The board you found was cheaper, but I would still need a processor and a few extra NICs. Also, I am always hesitant in buying an open box item, though i just bought my motherboard off ebay, so to each his own. ;) Maybe your route would have been cheaper, oh well too late now.

  3. Build your own home router?

I thought I would check back in here and tell you guys what I ended up going with.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400053320685&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2854wt_1141

I figured this solution, though not the most cost effective, was definitely the most fun. I already had a flash card that plugs into IDE and a 1U power supply.

Anyways this should be fun to setup, and it will let me use any spare wireless routers, to extend my wireless network.

Just ordered it so I will come back, once i get it setup to let you guys know how it goes.

    Cheers,

    Phil

  4. If I were you I would just buy a speaker that has optical input in it, because of the conversion from going optical to composite you are already loosing some audio quality.

But if you still want to go down this path, you could buy this optical to rca converter.

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Digital-Optical-Coax-Analog-RCA-Audio-Converter-/130476744791?pt=AU_Electronics_Accessories_Wires_Cables&hash=item1e61052057#ht_3418wt_911

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, Infiltrator, however I was looking for a converter that would still output 5.1 surround to my Logitech 5.1 speakers.

Thanks for the recommendation anyways though,

    Phil

  5. Hey guys just though anyone might know how to get optical audio from my apple tv 2 to Logitech G51 speakers (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3304945)

This is what I have found so far:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232028

Anyone know if this needs to be plugged into the computer? Or can i just buy one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812339162

and it would supply the power.

    Thank you in advance,

    Phil

  6. Hey guys just thought you guys might have a good experiences with some off the shelf routers. I am currently in the market for a new on. My current one is the Linksys WRT54GL. I love it! Installed tomato and it runs great, except that it is still 10/100. I am looking for a new router with 10/100/1000 on all ports, or at least the LAN ports, the ability to install ddwrt, tomato, openwrt or similar and if possible wireless N.

I am currently looking at these:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704038

    or

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124387

    - for the linksys one, I heard from a friend that when he installed ddwrt on it, it didnt run very well, so I am really liking the TP-LINK better especially because its about half the price.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers!

    Phil

  7. Yeah I missed them too. I would totally buy some to add to my collection of beer and shot glasses. Also ones that are laser etched would look bad ass.

What about a Hak5 beer glass that has the hak5 logo etched on the bottom of the glass, kinda like the Sam Adams glass.

  8. I was wondering if anyone would know any common issues related to setting up a VPN. I have flashed my WRT54GL router using the dd-wrt vpn bin. I have enabled VPN passthrough and setup the VPN under the services tab. I have a custom dns through DynDNS setup in the DDNS tab. Encryption is enabled. I have tried to connect from windows 7, Snow Leopard, my android phone v2.2, and it won't connect. In windows it gives me error 800. I followed the directions on the dd-wrt site, on how to set this up.

Anyone know any I can check/do to get this work?

    Thank you in advance,

    Phil

  9. It has been a while since the esxi virtualization series but I was wondering if anyone built a low power machine for 24/7 use. Obviously an i7 with atom power consumption would be ideal but not gonna happen, so whats the next best thing? Is there a reliable source for consumption by processor etc? I see the TDP but I am looking for real world figures. Also, whats the best bet on estimating motherboard power usage? Any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks

I would start measuring power consumption on your pc using a Kill-a-watt. It basically plugs into the power cord of your pc and then plugs into the wall and measures how much power you are using. You can then program it so it knows how much you pay per KWh. My home server is just under 5 bucks a month running 24/7. Its a AMD phenom x4 at 1.8ghz with 4x 1tb hard drives. I have tested my main desktop and if I were to leave it running all the time it would cost me 10 bucks a month, which is why I shut it off as much as possible.

I hope this was helpful. I think you could definitely run esxi on my server listed above. It may not be very fast but for a couple of vms it should work just fine. I would also check out the episode on proxmox-ve. Does the same thing as ESXi but you are able to administrate it from anywhere with a browser.

    cheers,

    Phil

  10. Just setup a pc at home with proxmox. I love the ability to admin it from anywhere and not having to worry about needing special software (VMware). Though I do like vmware esxi softwares UI better than proxmox. I will be sticking with proxmox for now, solely because of the web administration.

  11. bring on more virtual servers. basically more stuff I can do to a spare pc and by that I mean my quad core esxi server I use for testing!

    still enjoying the show!!

    cheers

Hello and welcome to Hak5, my name is Darren Kitchen and this is your weekly dose of technolust. We have a great show today, even though it is really [small]. (He meant to say kurtz = short) I am sorry... Now Shannon with trivia. See you later.

  13. over 7300 since 2004... I almost puked when I finished calculating this. I wish there was some type of desktop gadget that would show your total amount spent so you would think twice before buying something. ;)

I really don't mind the wait for stuff I order.

    <rant>

I hate shopping at best buy because they always way over price they sell in the store. I always see ethernet cables in there, $25 for 25ft, where if you know about newegg, amazon, monoprice you can get 100ft for 10 bucks. I also hate how the floor sales people are paid on commission, so they always bother you while you're shopping. Just let me get in, get out get on with my life. My other complaint is that usually the people trying to sell you pc's and tv's at best buy usually dont know what they are talking about. Or at least they will try to say anything to get you to buy. </rant>

By the way, I wish radioshack would stop trying to sell cell phones and horrible laptops, and went back to when they had lots of electronics, like how element-14 is.

I totally agree, radioshack needs to get back to basics and stop selling sell phones mp3 players and such.

  14. @Sicksicksicks

I tend to agree with you.. No body has found anything that is really substantial so it must that we just need to wait for and 2nd or even 3rd part of the key.
