  1. I've never even attempted to connect to a VPN before. I've never had a reason, but now I want to learn. I have credentials, and I'm using standard W7 VPN client. I don't know any of the protocols being used on the network. I guess what I want to know, are, some basics. I want to know which protocols are most likely being used, so that I can figure out how to connect. I've tried a few times, but my credentials will not be validated (error 601). I can ping the public IP of the network. I am not sure what to do next.
  2. There is a yearly event near where I live that attracts over 50,000 people. This event, apparently, also attracts the (gov. agency). I found this jewel while waiting on a friend in a parking lot near the event. I was later informed that the (agency) uses a box van, some laptops, and their federal juice to access all of the local internet connected city owned cameras. These cameras, which I did not know exist, are used by this agency to keep a watch on specific area to catch evidence of specific illegal behavior. When I was informed of the reason why this network existed and exists every year during a certain weekend, I was skeptical until, that is, it was confirmed by someone who doesn't have to guess or assume. Anyway, just a cool thing to share.
  3. I'm on windows usually but if there is some really great software that only works with another OS I am willing to use another OS. I've downloaded paint.net a few days ago but haven't tried it yet. Maybe it will turn out to work. Hope so anyway.
  4. ImageMagik might be what im looking for. I'll have to try it out and see what it has to offer.
  5. GIMP just doesn't work for this application. It uses too much screen real estate, it uses too much computing power, and it takes too long to issue commands.
  6. I'm looking for some open source software for editing photos. I don't need something as powerful and time consuming as GIMP or Photoshop. I want something more simple and convenient, but not something made for beginners. I need something that can do things like crop, rotate by angle, re-size, change contrast and saturation, and more of that sort of thing. I've asked the usual suspects (google, sourceforge, etc) but I've only come up with redundant garbage thrown out the door by mega corporations. Who knows what?
  7. I've uninstalled that garbage Samsung DLNA server software, no change as far as I can tell. Downloaded file rerecovery tool, but not holding out much hope. I have tons of pictures, and most of those affected are the first 4 years of my nephews life, and it's going to be a nightmare to restore them from backup, if the recovery tools fail. I've gone back and reviewed the affected files, and none of them have duplicate names, so it seems that they actually were pictures that were overwritten with seemingly random xml. It's still a mystery as to why they were given the .mta file extension, and I still don't know if they actually were .mta files or not. I have no idea what the data inside an .mta file looks like. Mysterious....
  8. Should have thought of this. I have recently got a couple Samsung WiFi bluray players. They are dlna compatible, so i decided to fool around with sharing some files to them. I can't be sure, but it seems as if Samsungs dlna server software has screwed up some pictures. Opening random .mta in notepad yields some xml looking stuff, in the tens of thousands of characters for each file. Some of it from one file included below. So now the question is how do I fix the files. (And what is w3.org?) <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!--Samsung video metadata file generated by SMVideoEngine (Samsung Metadata Video Engine) v1.0, June 2009. (http://www.samsung.com)--> <SEC:SECMeta xsi:schemaLocation="urn:samsung:metadata:2009 Video_Metadata_v1.0.xsd" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:SEC="urn:samsung:metadata:2009"> <SpecVersion>1.0</SpecVersion> <MediaInformation> <VideoLocator> <MediaUri>file://samsung_content.con</MediaUri> </VideoLocator> </MediaInformation> <ContentInformation> <Chaptering> <ChapterSegment> <KeyFrame>
  9. I changed the open with to windows picture viewer. The icons changed, but opening the files just shows white screen with "no preview available"
  10. I tried changing the extension back to .jpg. It keeps the .jpg extension, but it doesn't correct the problem (see picture) I have no idea how the files would be associated with or useful to flight simulator. I've never used that before, never had it installed on this machine.
  11. So I have a few folders of pictures, -very important ones-, that contain some image files that have mysteriously been changed from their original *.jpg file types to *.jpg.mta file types, and their thumb nails show as generic icons. Only some of the pictures have been affected, across multiple folders. I have not been able to find anything useful about .mta or .jpg.mta. I have no idea how this happened. I do have backups of the affected files, but I'm worried that the problem might continue to other pictures which are not regularly backed up, or other files which are not .jpg. Does anyone know how this happens, and if there is a way to restore the original files without dragging out the backup disk? What is the .mta file type? After looking again, I have realized that .avi files are also affected the same way. Also, some of the files show as *.mta, and some show as *.jpg.mta
  12. I'm a little confused. Are you saying that wireless routers can not use more than one channel in the 2.4ghz frequency range at a time? As I understand it, "channel" is just another word for frequency range. Maybe the router has multiple radios, with one using a certain channel, and the other using another channel, all at the same time? As for my client side radio, maybe it is somehow incompatible with this particular combination of router/router OS and version of inSSIDer?
  13. Maybe I am wrong about the model of WLAN card, then, because I have seen 5ghz several times with that same setup. I thought that in order for a piece of hardware to be WiFi certified it had to meet all of the WiFi Alliance's specs and standards (as in 5ghz compatible)? Or is that just for encryption standards?
  14. The router is a Netgear N600 and the WLAN card is an Intel 1000
  15. Yes, it supports simultaneous dual band. That's why I don't understand why I can't find 5ghz radio in the air. If the channel numbers directly reflect the frequency range of the signals, doesn't that mean that channels 7 and 11 are both in the 2.4ghz spectrum? If the router is radiating higher frequencies, shouldn't those show up on a radio scanner as much higher channels?
  16. I have a new 802.11n router. I've told it to use the 5ghz band (in addition to 2.4ghz), but when I look for radio with inSSIDer, I don't see any radio on that frequency. Is this a router problem, a NIC problem, or a weak software problem, or is it not a problem and just a user error? I don't remember if I have ever seen any radio in the 5ghz band with my current NIC using inSSIDer, so maybe that is a clue. Also, I don't know why my router is using both channels 11 and 7. IT says it uses 11 as primary and 7 as secondary. What is the purpose of that? Is it fault tolerance, with interference being the anticipated fault?
  17. This is a site that sells hollowed out coins. You can hide a micro sd in them. I thought it was pretty cool. I'm not affiliated with this company in any way, just wanted to share.
  18. My answer/suggestion won't help you with creating a cluster, but it might help you still. I've heard that Xubuntu is a great OS for older/slower hardware. If it's higher performance that you are after, maybe you should try Xubuntu, and run Windows in a VM if you happen to need Windows. Maybe run some benchmarks with your current configuration, install Xubuntu, and run some more benchmarks. Maybe it helps, maybe not, but either way it costs infinitely less than building a cluster with hardware that you don't already have.
  19. It seems like a redundant and obsolete way of doing things, especially if the hardware is capable interface through USB. I can't remember the last time I saw a computer with an RS232 port. I read something a while back that said that there is some very old and extremely expensive specialty hardware out there that was made when the RS232 was popular, and that some new hardware still uses RS232 so that it is compatible with that very old and very expensive to replace hardware. Could that be the case here?
  20. Well that makes sense I guess. I don't understand why they need to be connected by serial to be set up. By "setup" do you mean installing an OS and giving it the correct settings and such? This sounds like something that's more trouble than it would be worth for most individuals. The hardware also includes on board USB standard, so considering the commonplace of USB, why wouldn't they just use the USB for setup?
  21. Didn't know about this. Looks pretty cool, gonna try it.
  22. I should have been more specific, I guess. I am looking for software that runs within Window, or software that I can boot from USB. The first time I tried to use GRUB on the machine is question, I ended up with a broken and unrepairable MBR, which ultimately led to format and reinstall of HDD/Windows. I want to use a Windows Partition manager to create partitions on the same machines only HDD for trying out different OS's. Since I still use the machine or everyday stuff, I don't want to have to fix it again after losing part of the primary partition. If I can boot GParted from USB without using a separate bootloader, then GParted will do. Can it do that?
  23. I intend to use it for managing different OS partitions. FDISK takes the fun out of it and makes it more of a chore. Random names of partition software (provided they meet the aforementioned criteria) is just what I want. Good and free partition software is what I'm looking for. I figure if it's good and free, then it will do the things that I need it to do by default. I'm going to check out GParted. Any others?
  24. What I want to do sort of goes beyond using FDISK, and I already tried partition wizard mini tool (the free version). Partition Wizard does not support creating partitions and some other functions that I need. Can I get some suggestions for a free, full featured partition management software?
