Well FRS is a US standard so it really has no one operating on it in the UK and as my IC-E90 is modded I can operate on the frequencies at 5watts and just give out cheap Uniden FRS radio's I buy in the US. PMR446 tends to be full of learner motorbike riders and kids so its best to stay clear of that. 2M/70CM is full of old boys who feel the need to talk about how big their antenna is and how much money they have spent on there other equipment. I do like to operate on 4M and 10M but its a lot harder for me to give out a lot of radios.

    the last time I looked up some FRS channels were used over here for the fire brigade (although even they must have gone digital by now?) and 4M and 10M equipment is quite easy to get hold of , however it's all a case of antenna size etc. anyhow the reason why I asked is because I am breaking down some modified PMR gear I've had. I sold my PA4DEN modified FM1100 however I still have a Tait 2010 on UHF which was being used as a simplex repeater on 446 , some Tait 3020's on UHF and a couple of kenwood 350's ex police all modded on 446 and some of those horrid HT600e's if your interested...

  2. I was wondering why this would be useful on 'Doze when it's really easy to change an IP address however on reading the script what it actually does is change your IP to a static of 192.168.1.100 which is great but what happens when it's say a 192.168.2.XX or 192.168.0.XX ??

  3. hey metatron, I've just found this thread and was scanning through and I was amazed to see that someone who has a 'novice,intermediate and full licence' operates on FRS because it has better coverage than 446 , why not just use 70CM if you legally can? if not why not just get hold of some ex PMR equipment which can easliy do 5W (yes some of it can do the 6.25K spacing...) and modify it for 446???

  4. Geek squad and the other places have crazy prices. I was looking at a pricing sheet for Staples once and to install a router it was $150, seriously? You have to like plug it in...

    ...And thats how you get those nice unlocked routers in your neighbourhood or those lame WPA keys, not to mention if you need to set up any DSL. but seriously you are right it isn't rocket science....

  5. hey be fair , family and friends are free! and Hiren's boot CD, Ihavethepasswords and various live cd's including live windows ones and 'DOZE cd's are the normal repair tools. personally I prefer hardware problems as they are much easier and quicker to fix(how often have you seen that locking computer that requires the heatsink cleaning!) , but we all know those rootkits are the most annoying thing going!

    generally it is considered that the speed of light(in Mps) divided by the frequency(in Hz) (in english is 300 divided by the frequency in Mhz) gives you the wavelength of the frequency.

    1/4 of that wavelength is the frequency at which an antenna becomes resonant (give or take a little bit due to thickness of wires and surrounding cables etc) and another 1/4 wave is needed to balance the antenna for grounding. This is a basic dipole with basically no gain but can be a very effective antenna. the output of this would be in Metric not feet and inches....

    so as an example 900Mhz..

    300/900 = 33.33Cm wavelength

    33.33/4 = 8.3325Cm for a 1/4 wave (main element)

    and 8.3325Cm for ground

    making the antenna 8.3325*2 = 16.6625Cm long

    this antenna could be made from wire soldered straight to coax....

I'm unaware of the circuit for these lights , but I assume they are a string of led's with a basic i/o switch? if so personally I'd use an rs232 opto coupler (com port switcher) to replace the switch , the rest would then be software. I doubt you can switch the power to a single usb port via software....

    If we can pick up these frequencies cant we use the same type of data and transmit them over the fm band and then pick them up on the computer?

    I mean can we use a similar setup to broadcast a camera for example to our computers with an fm transmitter/reciever.. Even if not as far

    look up SSTV (slow scan TV), basically the same idea. a good piece of software for this is mixw32...

  10. yeah CB is 27Mhz (this includes SSB which is a mode not a frequency..) which is a HF freq. 137Mhz is a vhf freq. a good starting point for an antenna is a basic dipole as stated earlier which would be in the region of (300/137) which gives a wavelength of 2.18M , thus 2.18/4=54CM which basically means 54CM for a main element and the same for ground , thus 1.08M , however this is a basic antenna without much gain , but it should be about resonant. using wire for this antenna should be ok , but it needs to be in the clear and outside..... I wonder if such satellites are available here in the uk?

    Also it was stated that most scanners would not do the bandwidth , I remeber my old JIL 400 would do wideband FM on all freq's and as far as modifying old FM radio's, if you had one with a dial tuner (air capacitor) then normally you can just open the radio and screwdriver the capacitor , some radios only go up maybe 10Megs , some maybe 50... so 137 is perfectly possible a pre-amp would be definately needed too as well as that all important part - a decent antenna.I used to modify radio's this way to pick up the police which actually was an AM transmission but it was perfectly audiable on FM. I would also assume most PMR HI band gear would be useful for this too...

  11. Citizen Band (CB) is in the 28MHz range, SSB I think is even lower ~7MHz IIRC. You're best best is to use what the original author stated.

    Now on the tidbit of wireless baby cameras and such. Since these are low power devices if you really want to see them you could drive around with one of these:

    However, using it may violate local laws. There are other methods since the operational frequencies are known to homebrew something. ;)

Whilst away I noticed that travelodge (here in the U.K) have upgraded all their old philips T.V's to nice new flat panels with loads of inputs, including VGA... however all the inputs have been locked out , as have the menu's , so after a quick look on the net I found that on LG T.V's holding menu on the remote whilst holding menu on the tv for a few seconds brings up a secret menu but after an accidental press of the menu I found it brings up the 'HOTEL TV SETUP'so...

    PRESS MENU ON REMOTE AND MENU ON SIDE OF TV , HOLD BOTH UNTIL A MENU APPEARS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE TV. RELEASE BOTH BUTTONS NOW PRESS 1 OF THE MENU'S AGAIN IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH , JUST PRESS IT ONCE QUICKLY A SECOND MENU WILL APPEAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN PRESS OK ON 'LG HOTEL MODE SETUP'

    TURN INPUT SOURCE CHANGE TO 'YES'

    CHANGE 'AV SETTING' TO 'YES'

    CHANGE MENU DISPLAY TO 'YES'

    CHANGE SETUP MENU DISPLAY TO 'YES'

    CHANGE THESE SETTINGS BACK WHEN FINISHED...

    this will allow it to act as a nice monitor for your pc, watch nice divx's on the TV or even play you console on the tv. There was also a DTV menu(these TV's over here are only set up for analog and have a terrible signal) which could come in handy maybe a homebrew dipole will get you a few channels too :)
