  1. ubuntu looks too much like XP? if I use windoze I always use XP. quite simply because I hate bloated OSes. I loved win2K and as far as I'm concerned the main reason I use Ubuntu is because I'm fed up to the back teeth of spyware/malware removal (not always on my machine) and the fact that no matter how hard I try I can never keep my OS as quick as when it was first installed. As far as windows is concerned I installed it for a while and it was quite nippy , however do I really need that much horsepower just to run an operating system? I quite often use VM's for various testing purposes and to be fair I loved M$ VirtualPC until I tried VMware workstation under ubuntu! browsing the net is so painless! and why is it that no matter what M$ OS I use it kills my hard drive when running a game with virtual memory etc??? but when I run the same game under linux (using wine) I can use my computer straight away after playing the game.If you really need an operating system to bounce around the screen and play a fanfare just to load a web browser then maybe you really should stick with windows , otherwise wake up and smell the coffee...

  2. I'd normally either use OPHcrack live cd or just use Hiren's boot cd which has password resetting tools (I think as mentioned above). logging in as admin would work as most of the time the admin password is blank due to the safe setting up of windows....:-). Sometimes OPHcrack live cd won't load due to not all machines being too linux friendly out of the box.. but Hiren's never lets me down (p.s. Hiren's is not the only live cd with tools built in). also Kon-boot sometimes fails to work it just locks the machine.

  3. Hmm yeah I have a Dreamcast , a couple of master systems Mk1+2 a GameGear, a gameboy , a couple of 360 elite's, a couple of speccy 48's (rubber keys) just got rid of my Amiga 1200 and I have a Megadrive (mk1) with a mega-cd, PSP and a GBA SP and a few of my beloved Xboxen (mainly for media centres though... however also does most of my emulation.... )

  4. We still run a IBM AS400, it's 25+ years old... it scares the shit out of me.

yeah we still run AS400 too as did tesco the other day when I was in there.. and another local supermarket I know of. I know it's old but it works and to be fair it's quite a locked down system too.

  5. just a thought , why was the hub powered in the first place? it's normally because usb can only handle a certain current to each port and thus our motherboard can only handle so much as well. The wall adaptor is extra power for those devices that need it , be careful to keep an eye on current usage, having said that you should be ok with the devices mentioned above

  6. yeah 3 strike and then reboot and try again :).I agree most desktops will remove the password on a cmos reset. Laptops can have their own reset procedure (just requiring a little googling)normally involves taking it apart and any 4 digit code if it comes as standard is most likely generated via the serial number or the owners birth date... however if the computer actually boots an OS then it's fair game also try some of those 'backdoor' passwords that turn up when you google them...

  7. WTF? of course it's a scam! right down to the fact it chooses your locality as the header name. Did anyone notice how the signatures look totally different in the two pictures with the cheques?

  8. Ideally you need a password on a bios or maybe locking the hard drive with a password (word of warning don't forget or loose it though). having said that if you were to add a good bios password and take all the available boot options out other than the hard drive then make your case lockable (weld it together ideally :-)) then add a good OS password to a *nix system , it will stop alot of hacks...

  9. yeah I hate to say it , but VNC is a pain because you have to configure port forwarding on routers and if the person is not technically minded and your a distance away then you have problems , teamviewer bypasses all these problems...

  10. first things first watch out for the cameras and the watchful librarian. Then figure out what OS is being used (duh) and if the computer can be booted from other sources other than it's HD , say a CD or USB drive. I have seen a few tools being demonstrated on a few shows , check some of them out and as stated above Google is always your friend! maybe even check out some of the various boot cd's that are about?

  11. what can you say... Torrenting is a fairly newish idea as far as P2P is concerned and as the man claims a victory on closing one down , another P2P idea comes along. Personally I rarely use Torrents and as far as I'm concerned it's only handy if I can't get what I want elsewhere.. after all winners don't do warez?
