  1. So what is really your question?

SSH is already integrated in the most Linux distros.

So if you're new to Linux, use something like Ubuntu.

And if you want to be able to access your files securely

from Starbucks, just use a sFTP server.

  2. Hand out a SMB (?!?!) network share on the Linux Machine.

Access the SMB share on the Windows machine and just use something like syncback to keep

the network share and a folder on your Windows Machine identical.

Or use DropBox. But then you're storing it on their servers and you've got a limited space.

  3. I'm working on a SSH connection to my home so I can simply tunnel

Firefox and Thunderbird traffic through a SOCKS v5.

I'm currently using Plink because I think the GUI in Putty is unnecessary.

    The command I'm using is: user@ip -P 9393 -D 8585

So the dynamic port I'll be using in Firefox is 8585.

My question is, do I need to port forward 8585? And if, TCP or UDP?

And is 9393 a TCP or UDP port?

  4. i am about to start my final year project (i am undergrad student ) on Hacking....what we have to do is to hack my friends computer....i know java,c,sql, and a bit of networking(read the books by farhouzen , tannenbum..just that)....my friend has the same ISP though, but i have no idea about the routers in between........can you please suggest me what are the things i need to study for doing the project...............all i am asking is just tell me where to start..........because it looks very confusing..........someone says write java code, someone else says use wireshark.......... what should i do? :unsure:plz reply.

    p.s. i posted this on a thread earlier by mistake.....hope u ppl don't mind

So you're on your final year, on this "Hacking course" and you've been given a project

to hack into a friends computer?

I find it very hard to see a school that promotes the students to do a illegal action.

Anyways, I'll give you the instructions..

    CMD -> C:\ /Q/X/

Why don't you go and hack a gibson..

  5. hey thanks. I'll have to try that.

Well you guys have been very helpful. I think I was able to use ettercap and ARP cache poison him. However, I used the poison one-way feature. Please correct me if I'm wrong but did that stop his traffic? I haven't gotten a chance to see if it actually worked yet. I am sorry I don't know all this stuff yet...I'm learning and you are all very helpful.

I wish I had come by here ealier...because It's time to come back home! woot :-)

I liked all your ideas...I think I'll test them back home in a controlled environment and see which ones I liked the best.

Could you link some of your resources to these techniques? That would be very helpful.

    Great.

Ettercap is a great piece of software. If you haven't discovered it yet, ettercap

has a plugin called "isolate". Which makes the user direct its traffic to its own computer.

    "ettercap -T -q -i eth0 -P isolate /192.168.2.15/ // "

NOTE: This will not work the second you press enter on your computer. The ARP cache needs to be clean for this to work. The ARP cache will clean itself automatically after a while though.

  6. I have a question that is driving me crazy.

How come I cant pickup traffic from a network, even though I am not connected to it. I picture the traffic as packets flying through the air, from router to computer or computer to computer and vice versa. But how come that an outsider that is not connected to the network, cant pickup these packets flying through the air? It may sound nuts, and I agree... But I need to figure this out..

  7. I was hoping to run the actual games for the users ON the server, and have the physical PC to connect to the server and run the games, i was just wondering if i can be done, if not then heh, ill just use the NAS for backups.

So what you are trying to accomplish is that you want 4 terminal computer to access this server and run the games from there.. :(

  8. Well Downloads.com finally screwed up. I was instructing a family on how to d load winrar and wouldn't you know it it had a virus piggybacking and laughing it's ass off. It is listed as INTERVALHEHEHE. I have been researching the soulution since avast has not worked either and I have seen some long HKEy solutions but none other. I was hoping someone here had an easier method??? If so please drop the info!

Im off and dumb as a box of rocks tonight. Thanks

    Sorry what?

You were instructing a family on how to download WinRar from Downloads.com and it had a virus called piggybacking?

And, the virus was laughing its ass off? (msgbox?!?!) Just download a virus scanner or use a boot CD or something..

  9. There are certain super tweaked Windows XP versions that only takes up about 300-800 MB.

A normal Windows XP installation possibly takes up around 1,3 Gig..

Get a Windows XP disc image and download a program called Nlite. And then delete the components you don't need.

Such as printer drivers and unnecessary utilities.

    Good luck!

  10. Damn, problem still not solved.

I checked in the shell terminal on the FreeNAS to check if the drive was mounted.

    And it was.

So whata heck is wrong, the FreeNAS server reads the harddrive and CIFS/SMB is enabled

but still no drive turns up when I try do the:

    \\freenas or \\192.168.2.17

    Argh..

Disc is formated with UFS now.

  11. the freenas site has a manual you can look at for answers. there could be many issues with your setup the first being most likely that you didn't set it all up properly. Just go through the setup step by step and look for whatever you missed.

    Thanks man.

I discovered that I missed to set a mount point.. <_<
